Welcome to your match thread for Orlando City’s 2018 U.S. Open Cup opener. The Lions head down the Florida Turnpike to meet up with Miami United FC tonight at Ted Hendricks Stadium in Hialeah. The NPSL side has nothing to lose and is playing at home as it attempts to add another victim to its list in the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Miami United has been around since 2013 — just two fewer years than Orlando City. The team has qualified for the U.S. Open Cup for its third time in club history (2015, 2017), but has made it past the second round for the first time ever. In fact, it’s the only NPSL club still in the competition.

So far, it’s been easy sailing in the U.S. Open Cup in 2018. Its three wins have all been by multiple goals. Miami opened its USOC run with a bang, defeating FC Kendall 5-2 in the first round. The club then dispatched Miami FC 2, 3-1 in Round 2, and Jacksonville Armada, 2-0 in Round 3. So, Miami United will have every reason to enter tonight’s match with plenty of confidence.

Orlando City must pose a tempting target for Miami United. The Lions have lost in the competition to lower division teams in each of the last two seasons. On the other hand, Orlando has reached the quarterfinals twice in the last six years (2013, 2015). Orlando City is also 8-0-0 all-time against open division teams in the U.S. Open Cup.

This may be an opportunity for some players returning to injury to get some minutes. That said, I don’t expect many starters to be in the starting XI. I could see guys like Scott Sutter or Jonathan Spector make the 18 in hopes of getting them some minutes if game conditions warrant it, however.

Look for Earl Edwards Jr. to get a game in goal, with Adam Grinwis also dressing.
