USA vs. Chile, International Friendly: Preview, How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Lineups, and Match Thread

Welcome to your live thread for the first of two friendlies between the United States Women's National Team and Chile (11 p.m. ET, ESPN2). Alex Morgan and Ashlyn Harris of the Orlando Pride are on Jill Ellis’ squad, as usual, as the Yanks take the field tonight in Carson, CA. The teams will meet again on Tuesday in San Jose.

It’s the final chance for Ellis to tinker with her squad ahead of World Cup qualifying in October during the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship. The U.S. will be without Megan Rapinoe (rib injury) and Amy Rodriguez of Utah Royals FC replaces ‘Pinoe’ on the squad.

Tonight is a bit historic, as the USWNT has never before faced Chile. Las Chicas de Rojo will be the 52nd different country to face the USWNT. The Chileans finished second to Brazil in the 2018 Copa América Femenina and, as such, have already qualified for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup. It will be Chile’s first appearance in the competition. Chile hosted the Copa América Femenina, going 2-0-2 to finish second to Colombia in Group A. In the final round robin, the hosts lost to Brazil, 3-1, drew Colombia, 0-0, and earned World Cup qualification by finishing second in the final group with a 4-0 demolition of Argentina. Chile was 1-1-1 in the final round robin, finishing on four points — five behind champion Brazil.

Chile is captained by 27-year-old goalkeeper Christiane Endler, a German-Chilean dual citizen who played collegiate soccer down the road at the University of South Florida. Endler’s club team is French power PSG. Her 57 caps are the most on a squad that averages approximately 25 years of age.

Although Chile surprised teams in the Copa América Femenina, it should pose little threat to the U.S. on home soil. The Chileans currently hold the no. 39 spot in FIFA’s world rankings. The United States has played a lot of top competition throughout 2018 and will want to head into Concacaf play on a roll. Unless the U.S. plays poorly, it should win both of these friendlies comfortably. That said, you never know what can happen on a pitch when the ball is kicked.

Morgan is just 10 goals shy of 100 for her international career. If she can maintain her current international form, she could draw closer during these two friendlies and reach the milestone in the Concacaf Championship in October.
