Orlando City followed picks to help the forward and back lines with the selection of midfielder Tommy Madden out of UNC-Charlotte. Madden, a 6-foot native of Burtonsville, MD, was a regular player over his final three seasons in Charlotte.

Madden appeared in 72 matches (58 starts) over his college career, scoring seven goals with nine assists. He attempted 90 shots, getting 39 on goal and scoring two game-winners. His best season came as a senior, when he scored a career-high four goals to go along with a career best five assists.

After playing in just one match his freshman year of 2015, Madden helped the 49ers win the Conference USA title in 2016, earning conference All-Tournament team honors. He was the team’s MVP his junior year and earned first-team All-Conference USA and All-Tournament team honors.

Luiz Muzzi and James O’Connor addressed all of the team’s outfield groups on draft day, collecting a forward, a center back, and, now, a midfielder. It will be interesting to see how the team plans to use Madden, who wasn’t present for the SuperDraft in Chicago.
