This match-up doesn’t seem like a typical friendly. It pits the No. 1 U.S. against No. 3 France in a battle of the world’s best. Both teams will want to make a big statement heading into this summer’s big event. The USWNT will be looking to defend its title while France will want to serve notice that the hosts are out to take that crown away in 2019.

Orlando Pride stars Alex Morgan and Ashlyn Harris are once again on the U.S. roster. Morgan is fresh off winning the Concacaf Female Player of the Year Award and will try to continue her outstanding 2018 form in the first match of this World Cup year of 2019. The Pride forward is just two goals shy of 100 for her international career. Harris will likely be backing up Alyssa Naeher today.

The Americans are 17-2-3 against France, but have not won in the last two meetings. Prior to last year’s draw referenced above, the USWNT lost 3-0 to France in the 2017 SheBelieves Cup. The U.S. last tasted victory against France with a 1-0 win in the 2016 SheBelieves Cup on Alex Morgan’s stoppage-time goal in Nashville. The U.S. also beat the French by the same score line in the Olympics that year on Carli Lloyd’s goal. The USWNT holds a 53-19 goal advantage in the series.

The United States is riding a 28-match unbeaten streak (25-0-3). The USWNT has outscored its opponents 93-17 in that span and scored at least a goal in each of those matches. The last time the U.S. failed to score a goal came against Australia in the 2017 Tournament of Nations — an impressive stretch of 33 games.

France manager Corinne Diacre has an outstanding roster of world-class players, led by forwards Eugénie Le Sommer from Olympique Lyonnais and Gaёtane Thiney, midfielder Amandine Henry, and defender Wendie Renard.
