The United States Women’s National Team squares off against England today in Round 2 of the SheBelieves Cup at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. The Yanks dropped two crucial points in the opener by allowing Japan a stoppage-time equalizer, falling behind tonight’s opponent in the tournament standings.

So, today’s match is a battle for the top spot in the standings and it gets underway at 4:30 p.m. (FOX). These two sides battled for last year’s SheBelieves Cup on the final match day of the tournament, with the USWNT prevailing on an England own goal to win, 1-0. That game took place at Orlando City Stadium, with Millie Bright knocking a Megan Rapinoe cross off goalkeeper Karen Bardsley and into the net for the game’s only goal.

The U.S. is 1-1-1 in 2019 after splitting a pair of road friendlies in Europe in January and drawing 2-2 vs. Japan on Wednesday.

The Americans are 10-4-1 against England in the all-time series. These teams like to play nailbiters, finishing with a 1-0 score line in each of the last three meetings. The last time they played was in last year’s SheBelieves Cup. The U.S. is 2-1-0 against England in this event, with the USWNT also grabbing the 2016 edition over in Tampa, 1-0. Crystal Dunn scored the game’s only goal.

Orlando Pride striker Alex Morgan is still searching for her 100th career international goal, after bagging No. 99 on Wednesday by redirecting a Christen Press cross inside the near post with her chest. It was a crafty goal by a forward who has scored buckets of them over the course of her career.

Jill Ellis will hope Becky Sauerbrunn can play after her back line coughed up two goals against the run of play on Wednesday night. Both exposed poor play by Tierna Davidson and Crystal Dunn, so essentially the entire left side of the back four.

England is the No. 4 team according to the latest FIFA world rankings, with the USWNT holding the No. 1 spot for now. The Lionesses join the USWNT as the only other side to take part in all four SheBelieves Cups to date.

Ellen White will be a player the U.S. back line will have to worry about. She scored in England’s win over Brazil and has a good goal-scoring record in this tournament. Toni Duggan and Beth Mead are also players to watch. England moves the ball well and the Lionesses have enough athleticism to get at the USWNT defense. Lucy Bronze can create issues from England’s back line. Another player Orlando Pride fans will want to watch for is Chioma Ubogagu, who was called in as a substitute on the England squad. She may not get in the game, but then again, you never know.

SheBelieves Cup Rules

The tournament’s winner will, as usual, be based on total points (three for a win, one for a draw), with the first tiebreaker being goal difference, followed by goals scored, then head-to-head result. If teams are still tied, the next tiebreaker will be the Fair Play ranking. Each team is permitted six substitutes per game.
