USA vs. Chile, 2019 World Cup: Preview, How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Lineups, and Match Thread

Welcome to your live thread for the United States Women's National Team against Chile in World Cup Group F play. How will the Yanks back up their dominant performance against Thailand on Tuesday after responding to wins by the competition’s other top contenders? The World Cup title defense continues today in Paris (12 p.m., FOX, Telemundo).

The USWNT has faced Chile twice before, winning both friendly matches in 2018. The first of those was a 3-0 win on Aug. 31, 2018 at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA, with Tierna Davidson and Christen Press scoring and Chile providing an own goal. The Yanks could have had more but a penalty kick goal for the U.S. was oddly and incorrectly ruled off for encroachment and a free kick for Chile given.

The teams met again four days later in San Jose’s Avaya Stadium and this time the Yanks won by a 4-0 score line in what was the USWNT’s final tune-up for World Cup qualification. Mallory Pugh, Tobin Heath, and Carli Lloyd (twice) provided the goals.

The U.S. will try to improve upon its 2-0-0 all-time record against Chile and its 8-1-2 mark in 2019 against the world’s No. 39-ranked team. That’s five spots below Thailand, just in case you’re not familiar with the FIFA world rankings.

Chile is playing in the World Cup for the first time. La Roja Femenina lost their opener to Sweden, 2-0, on Tuesday. Led by team captain and goalkeeper Claudia Endler, who kept those previous meetings against the United States from being more lopsided, Chile was out-shot, 25-6 (7-1 on target). Endler, 27, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, is a legitimate talent and can keep her team in games, as she did on Tuesday. Sweden didn’t break through until the 83rd minute and then added a second deep in stoppage time. Locals may recall that Endler played college soccer for the University of South Florida.

Offensively, midfielder Yanara Aedo was Chile’s most dangerous attacker in World Cup qualifying, scoring three goals in the run to France. The Chileans hosted the 2018 Copa América Femenina, where they finished a surprise second to Brazil to earn qualification.

Jill Ellis’ side must be patient today and not get frustrated if shots don’t go in early. Endler is an outstanding talent and has good size, standing 6-foot. If the Yanks produce chances like they did in the second half against Thailand, they should be able to put a few of them past Endler to retain their commanding lead in the group. Fans can probably expect a U.S. victory, but shouldn’t expect the match to be as easy as the opener against Thailand.

Orlando Pride striker Alex Morgan could tie Michelle Akers for fifth on the USWNT’s all-time goal-scoring list if she scores today. Morgan is on 106 international goals — just one behind Akers.

  • Absolutely no links to illegal streams. They can get us in trouble, and no one wants that.
  • Try not to be the person who spews nothing but venom and hate for the team. It’s OK to be critical, and, let’s face it, sometimes even the best teams can be frustrating to watch, but being overly negative relentlessly can sap the enjoyment for others.
  • Keep it somewhat clean and fair when criticizing players / officials. You never know who might be reading.
  • Do unto others in the match thread, the way you would have others do unto you. We are a fun community and want to keep it this way. We have a moderator, but we’d rather let him enjoy the game instead of having to play babysitter.

Enjoy the match! Go America!
