Welcome to your live thread for the United States Women's National Team against Sweden in World Cup Group F play. The two teams will fight for the top of the group today after both have dispatched Thailand and Chile in the opening two rounds. The USWNT’s World Cup title defense continues today in Le Havre (3 p.m., FOX, Telemundo).

The USWNT is 21-6-11 overall and 3-1-1 in World Cup play against the Swedes. The most recent overall meeting came in June 2017 when the Yanks won 1-0 in Gothenburg on a Rose Lavelle goal. Sweden famously knocked the U.S. out of the 2016 Olympics on penalties after a 1-1 draw. That led to USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo saying some nasty things about the Swedes’ tactics and eventually ushered in the Alyssa Naeher era as the Yanks’ first-choice keeper.

FIFA’s ninth-ranked team, Sweden qualified for the World Cup by winning UEFA Group 4 with a record of 7-1-0. The only loss for the Swedes came against Ukraine on the road. The Blågult (the Blue and Yellow) scored 22 goals in Group 4 qualifying and conceded only twice. Sweden has finished as high as second in the competition (2003), with a pair of third-place finishes (1991, 2011).

Jill Ellis’ side must be extremely patient and focused to break down Sweden’s organized defense, while being mindful of the Blågult on the counter. Sweden has scored seven goals in this tournament and six different players have found the net, with only Kosse Asllani scoring twice. Asllani scored four times in World Cup qualifying and Stina Blackstenius added three goals.

Orlando Pride striker Alex Morgan could tie Michelle Akers for fifth on the USWNT’s all-time goal-scoring list if she scores today. Morgan is on 106 international goals — just one behind Akers.

Match Thread Rules

This is your live thread for posting comments on the match. So use our comments section below to talk about the game in real time with other supporters. If you’re new, welcome to our happy home! While you’re here, please observe a few basic rules:

  • Absolutely no links to illegal streams. They can get us in trouble, and no one wants that.
  • Try not to be the person who spews nothing but venom and hate for the team. It’s OK to be critical, and, let’s face it, sometimes even the best teams can be frustrating to watch, but being overly negative relentlessly can sap the enjoyment for others.
  • Keep it somewhat clean and fair when criticizing players / officials. You never know who might be reading.
  • Do unto others in the match thread, the way you would have others do unto you. We are a fun community and want to keep it this way. We have a moderator, but we’d rather let him enjoy the game instead of having to play babysitter.

Enjoy the match! Go America!
