USA vs. Panama, 2019 Gold Cup: Preview, How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Lineups, and Match Thread

Welcome to your match thread as the United States Men’s National team faces Panama in the team’s final group stage game of the 2019 Gold Cup. Tonight’s match, which will take place at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City (9 p.m., FS1, UniMas, UDN), will mark eight consecutive Gold Cups to feature a meeting between the USMNT and Panama.

The United States is 12-1-6 all-time against Los Canaleros, including a 5-1-4 record in Gold Cup play. The teams last met back in January in Gregg Berhalter’s first match in charge of the USMNT. The U.S. won 3-0 in Glendale, AZ, on goals by Djordje Mihailovic, Walker Zimmerman, and Cristian Ramirez.

Locals may recall that the U.S. and Panama played in what is now known as Exploria Stadium during World Cup qualifying in October of 2017, with the Stars & Stripes winning 4-0. Cristian Pulisic opened the scoring, Jozy Altidore added a brace, and Bobby Wood added another as we all felt pretty great about the USMNT — for a few days, at least.

The U.S. leads Group D as play resumes today, having already clinched a spot in the knockout rounds. Likewise, Panama is already through as well. The only thing to decide is which team wins the group. Berhalter’s squad will top the group with either a win or a draw, holding a +10 goal differential after two matches. Panama, sitting at +4, needs a win to finish atop Group D. Both teams have swept through Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana.

Weston McKennie will have to avoid a yellow card or he’ll be suspended in the USMNT’s first knockout game on Sunday in Philadelphia. No other Yanks are on a caution.

Panama features four current MLS players: Harold Cummings (San Jose Earthquakes), Michael Murillo (New York Red Bulls), Román Torres (Seattle Sounders), and Omar Browne (Montreal Impact). There are also three former MLS players on the squad: Adolfo Machado (Houston Dynamo), Fidel Escobar (New York Red Bulls), and Armando Cooper (Toronto FC).

Whoever wins Group D tonight will face the Group C runner-up, Curacao, on Sunday. The runner-up in the group will face the Group C champion, Jamaica.
