Welcome to your match thread for a Sunday night Leagues Cup matchup between Orlando City (1-0-0, 3 points) and Atletico San Luis (0-1-0, 0 points) at Inter&Co Stadium (8 p.m., MLS Season Pass on Apple TV+). It’s the final match of Group East 2 competition for both teams, and tonight’s game marks the first meeting between the two teams.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of the match.

History

As this is the first-ever clash between these two clubs, there is no history between them. San Luis went 0-2-0 in the 2023 iteration of the Leagues Cup, finishing at the bottom of Group East 4 behind the New York Red Bulls and New England Revolution, while Orlando City topped Group South 2 with a 1-0-1 record and won the shootout following its draw against the Houston Dynamo.

Orlando City is 1-2-3 in competitive matches against Liga MX teams, splitting a pair of Leagues Cup matches against Santos Laguna and going 0-1-3 in four Concacaf Champions League/Cup matches against Tigres.

Match Overview

Orlando City enters this match on a six-game unbeaten run across all competitions (5-0-1). The Lions are coming off a 4-1 home win over CF Montreal on Friday, July 26, to open Group East 2 competition. The Lions have a record of 3-5-4 at Inter&Co Stadium in MLS play and 5-5-5 in all competitive matches. However, they have been better of late, going 3-0-1 in their last four at home in all competitions.

San Luis lost 3-2 at CF Montreal on Tuesday night, falling behind 2-0, then pulling one back before conceding again. A penalty late in stoppage gave the Liga MX side made the final score look a bit better.

The Lions can still win the group with a close loss or better tonight thanks to the three-goal win against Montreal and the Canadian side conceding the late goal against San Luis. Orlando and Montreal are even on points (3) at the top of the group, but the Lions enter tonight with a +3 goal differential, while Montreal sits at -2. San Luis is -1 but has no points.

The scenarios are as follows: Orlando wins the group with a win, draw (regardless of the shootout result), or a close loss. San Luis can win the group tonight with a lopsided win if it can score enough goals to surpass Orlando’s total in group play.

“We’re here to win games,” Orlando City Head Coach Oscar Pareja said ahead of the match. “I think our responsibility regarding the tournament or the moments of the season, this group of players is prepared to keep competing and try to get results. So (tonight) is a good, important game for us to demonstrate that the team has good momentum, so we will continue with that mentality against San Luis. It’s an opportunity for us to qualify for the next round and we will do (our) best possible to do it.”

The Lions will be without Duncan McGuire (international duty), Mason Stajduhar (lower leg), and Michael Halliday (knee).
