Orlando Pride Sign No. 15 Overall Draft Pick Christina Burkenroad
Orlando Pride has finally signed its entire 2016 NWSL College Draft class. The club announced the signing of midfielder/forward Christina Burkenroad today, adding the No. 15 overall pick to the team's roster ahead of Friday's match at Houston Dash.
The 22-year-old product of Cal State-Fullerton has been ubiquitous at club events around town, signing autographs, meeting with fans, and training in hopes of officially joining the Pride and that day has come. She is now officially an NWSL rookie, joining fellow 2016 Pride draft picks Sam Witteman and Dani Weatherholt.
"Christina has greatly impressed us with her growth as a player since the start of preseason," said Orlando Pride Head Coach Tom Sermanni in a club press release. "She displays all the attributes required to be a very successful attacker in today's game."
She finished her college career with 66 points (24 goals, 18 assists) in 58 matches. During her senior season, Burkenroad was named the Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year and was named MVP of the Conference's tournament in both 2014 and 2015. She earned First Team honors in both of those seasons as well.
"I'm very thankful to have the opportunity to be on the roster and I'm ready to embrace this next challenge," Burkenroad said in the club release. "I plan to take everything I have learned so far, to help the team in any way I can and to continue to grow as a player."
A San Diego native, Burkenroad had a breakout season in 2015, totaling 11 goals and 11 assists for the Titans in 21 games — all starts. The 5-foot-10 standout can play in an attacking midfielder or forward role. She finished her college career with eight game-winning goals.
Her accolades include being selected Big West Offensive Player of the Week in August, the 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Region Second Team and the 2014 and 2015 Big West Conference First Team, while also earning Big West Conference Tournament MVP honors.
When Cami Levin (emergency appendectomy) is ready to come off the injured list, Sermanni will need to make a roster move as the club will be one over the roster limit. This is purely speculation, but forward Jamia Fields has yet to make an impact with the club, so she could be on the outside looking in when Levin returns.
