Orlando City vs. New York Red Bulls: Preview, How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Lineups, Match Thread, and More

Welcome to your match thread and preview for a Sunday night match-up between Orlando City (8-2-7, 31 points) and the New York Red Bulls (7-8-3, 24 points) at Red Bull Arena (7 p.m., FOX 35 Plus). This is the second of two scheduled meetings between the Eastern Conference rivals in 2020 after they recently met in Orlando on Oct. 3.

The Lions are on their longest unbeaten streak in the team’s MLS era, at 11 games (6-0-5), and are on the road for the second time in three matches. New York returns from a successful two-game road swing on which the Red Bulls went 1-0-1 with a win at Atlanta and a draw vs. Toronto FC in East Hartford, CT.

History

The Lions are 5-6-1 in 12 meetings with the Red Bulls in the all-time series, with a 2-4-0 mark at Red Bull Arena. Orlando got the better of New York at Exploria Stadium on Oct. 3 in the most recent meeting, winning 3-1 on goals by Daryl Dike, Junior Urso, and Antonio Carlos. Florian Valot scored for New York.

The Red Bulls won 1-0 in their previous visit to Exploria Stadium on July 21, 2019. Brian White’s goal stood up as Carlos Ascues, Tesho Akindele, and Sacha Kljestan each hit the woodwork in the second half. Prior to that, the Lions eked out a 1-0 win at Red Bull Arena on Kljestan’s goal on March 23, 2019. Before that game the home team had won each of the last five home games in the series, splitting a pair of matches during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

The Red Bulls grabbed a 1-0 result in the 2018 season finale to capture the Supporters’ Shield. It kicked off three consecutive 1-0 matches but the games used to be a bit more high scoring.

Prior to the 2018 finale, the clubs met in Orlando on March 31, 2018. The Lions pulled off a 4-3 home victory. Dom Dwyer marked his season debut with a brace and Will Johnson and Josué Colmán added goals to lift Orlando — the latter actually was a shot by Scott Sutter that went off the Paraguayan’s back. Valot, Derrick Etienne, and Aaron Long scored for New York.

The teams met three times in 2016, with New York going 2-0-1. The teams split two games in 2015, with the road team winning both times, including Orlando City’s 5-2 win in New Jersey behind a Cyle Larin hat trick.

Match Overview

Orlando is 2-2-3 in true road matches in 2020 and 4-2-4 in all league games away from Exploria Stadium. The Red Bulls are 3-4-0 at home this season and have surprisingly lost four of their last five at Red Bull Arena.

Daniel Royer is the danger man, with four goals and three assists on the season. Teenage sensation Caden Clark has scored in the last two matches — his first two in MLS.

With the Red Bulls, the faces may change but the team does not. New York will press high, look to force turnovers, and try to create overloads and odd-man situations. Lazy or off-line passes by Orlando’s back line or midfield will be punished with extreme prejudice.

The Lions still have a lot of players on the injured list. As of Saturday, the following players were all listed as out: Uri Rosell, Tesho Akindele, Benji Michel, and Mauricio Pereyra (all undisclosed injuries), Joao Moutinho (groin), and Dom Dwyer (knee surgery). In addition, Kyle Smith did not make the game day roster on Wednesday despite the bench being short. Forward Matheus Aias was cleared to train on Friday and might make the bench but is unlikely to play. Pedro Gallese and Sebas Mendez have returned from international duty but are not eligible to play until going through a quarantine period that should have them back on the pitch by Oct. 24.

New York is without Kaku and Cristian Casseres while they too quarantine, but aside from that the Red Bulls are mostly healthy. Defender Patrick Seagrist (groin) was listed as out as of Friday, while midfielders Omir Fernandez (hamstring) and Ben Mines (groin) were listed as questionable.
