Orlando City vs. Toluca, Leagues Cup: Preview, How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Lineups, Match Thread, and More
The Lions travel to Los Angeles to face the top League Phase finisher from Liga MX in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals.
Welcome to your match thread for a Wednesday night Leagues Cup quarterfinal matchup between Orlando City and Liga MX side Toluca at Dignity Health Sports Park (9 p.m., MLS Season Pass on Apple TV). Tonight’s meeting is the first between these two sides, and it is the first knockout round of the 2025 version of the competition.
Here’s what you need to know ahead of the match.
History
As this is the first-ever clash between these two clubs, there is no history between them. Orlando City is 3-2-6 in competitive matches against Liga MX teams.
Match Overview
Orlando City is coming off its fourth consecutive win and seventh straight match without a loss in all competitions after Saturday’s 3-1 home win over Sporting Kansas City. The Lions have scored three or more goals in those four straight wins and in five of the seven games during the current run. Orlando got to this point in the tournament by drawing Pumas UNAM 1-1 (but losing the shootout 4-3) in the League Phase opener, then beating Atlas FC 3-1 on Aug. 2 and stomping Necaxa 5-1 just four days later. All of those matches took place at Inter&Co Stadium, so this is the first time Orlando City will play away from home in the 2025 Leagues Cup, even though the Lions were technically the “visitors” against Pumas. Playing on the road doesn’t usually faze Orlando City, as it is 6-2-5 in MLS road games and 1-0-0 in U.S. Open Cup road games this season.
Deportivo Toluca is a good team out of Liga MX that got to this point by drawing the Columbus Crew 2-2 and then winning the ensuing shootout 4-2 in its opening match. Los Diablos Rojos then dispatched CF Montreal and New York City FC by identical 2-1 scorelines to finish atop the Liga MX side in the table in the competition’s first phase. Toluca is coming off a 1-1 draw against Pumas at home on Saturday. Tonight’s “hosts” (and the crowd will be quite pro-Toluca) are unbeaten in five matches (3-0-2) since a 4-3 home loss to Tigres on July 26. Toluca sits fifth in the current Liga MX standings with a 3-1-1 record.
As is usual with matches against Liga MX clubs, Orlando must stay focused defensively for the entirety of the game, and the priorities should be taking care of the ball while being quick to transition back defensively if the attack turns it over. Toluca has shown itself capable of winning shootouts and tight, low-scoring games as well.
“First, it is a privilege for the group to participate in this tournament,” Orlando City Head Coach Oscar Pareja said ahead of the match. “Second, to qualify in the first four has just given us the opportunity to escalate the culture of the club and the culture of our team. Being in these quarterfinals and against this team, Deportivo Toluca, is very motivating for our players. The preparation has not been any different. We’ve been concentrating on getting our sections ready. Despite the hours of flying and all those things, the boys are very enthusiastic and optimistic.”
The Lions will be without Duncan McGuire (shoulder), Wilder Cartagena (Achilles), and Yutaro Tsukada (knee).
