Good morning! It’s a shame yesterday’s Orlando City SC win over FC Dallas wasn’t televised because it was a lot of fun to watch.

The next best thing, I suppose, would be to link you to:

Our full game recap,

The match photo gallery, and

The video of Kaká's penalty kick goal.

That ought to start off your Thursday the right way (even if you saw all of this yesterday).

Let's get to your Thursday morning Lion Links. Enjoy them with a side of bacon. (Mmmmm, bacon.)

Congrats to 30+ Orlando City Youth Players

We want to extend a big Mane Land congratulations to the more than 30 student athletes in the Orlando City Youth Soccer program, who committed yesterday to play at more than 25 colleges and universities. Playing soccer is cool. Getting an education is even cooler. Doing both? Well, now you're just showing off. Well done, everyone. William Crawford, our resident youth soccer expert, will have more on yesterday's commitments in his Saturday column.

U.S. Open Cup Gets Some New Wrinkles

Orlando City will participate in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament as an MLS squad for the first time in 2015. That means a free pass into Round 4. A record 91 teams will take part this year, up 11 from the 80 that competed in 2014 and there are some changes coming to the format. Among the important changes: a geographically-based random draw will determine the round of 16 matches and set a fixed bracket to the final. It should give it more of a “March Madness” feel.

What the Hell, Jurgen?

Listen, it's perfectly fine to have an opinion about something. But if you're going to articulate that opinion in a public forum, you should probably check your facts to see if your position holds any water. Jurgen Klinsmann set soccer Twitter on fire yesterday (not that it takes much) with comments about the lack of fitness of his USMNT players based in MLS. Our sister blog, Stars and Stripes FC, was more than happy to set Klinsmann straight on a few facts. I like Klinsy, personally, but lately the results are terrible and his rhetoric is tiresome. Do better, Jurgen.

Beckham Still Without a Stadium; He Can Use FIU Though

The saga of David Beckham's Miami MLS dreams continues, as the former star midfielder has yet to bend South Florida officials to his will when it comes to building a soccer stadium. County commissioners did, however, agree that Florida International University would make a nice temporary home or Beckham's mythical future team. The down side is that no one in Beckham's camp has actually accepted playing at FIU as a thing yet. Beckham's search for a soccer stadium goes on. I think they should just find a place on South Beach and build a "nightclub" that just happens to have 20,000 seats and a soccer pitch.

That's all I've got for you today, peeps. Have a great Thursday.

Tsukada out for the season, OCB adds a striker, the SheBelieves Cup finishes tonight, and more.

Welcome to Wednesday, Mane Landers. I hope you’re recovering from the season opener. I find it best to look for the positives or just pretend none of it ever happened. I’m certain one of those two is a healthy way to process your feelings. The good news is that the season is underway, the Orlando Pride are close to starting their new campaign, and we get to watch the USWNT play tonight. See? It isn’t all bad. Let’s get to the links, but first, let’s wish Pride midfielder Morgan Gautrat a happy birthday.

Tsukada Out for the Season

Yutaro Tsukada has been placed on the Season-Ending Injury list for Orlando City following successful surgery on his left ACL. The young midfielder sustained the injury in the preseason match against CF Montreal. While we expected this news, it doesn’t make it any easier for Tsukada, the club, or any of us. It’s another blow to the depth of Orlando City in a season that has only just begun. We wish Tsukada a full and speedy recovery.

OCB Striker Signing

When I said I wanted Orlando City to sign a new striker, I should have been more specific. The club acquired the SuperDraft Priority to forward Dyson Clapier from Sporting Kansas City. In return, Sporting Kansas City gets Orlando City’s natural second-round pick in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft. Following the acquisition, Clapier was signed to an MLS NEXT Pro contract through 2025, with a club option in 2026.

SheBelieves Cup Finishes Tonight

The USWNT will need a victory against Japan tonight to win the 2025 SheBelieves Cup. Japan holds the advantage thanks to a plus-seven goal differential as compared to the plus-three goal differential of the U.S. The match is set for 7:30 p.m. at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. There are on air and streaming options available to watch the match. If the USWNT can pull out the victory, it will be the sixth SheBelieves title in a row. Emily Sams got the start and went the full 90 minutes against Australia on Sunday. Hopefully, the Orlando Pride defender will see more action this evening.

Ream is a Believer

With the 2026 World Cup coming up next year, the USMNT wants to make a big splash. Longtime U.S. defender Tim Ream says that Mauricio Pochettino is the right man to do the job. Ream will certainly be an integral part of the next World Cup squad, and he asserts that Pochettino will evolve the USMNT to the next level.

Free Kicks

  • Casey Krueger’s time with the USWNT appears to be done. Emma Hayes is going younger.
  • The MLS Disciplinary Committee suspended and fined Chicago Fire midfielder Brian Gutiérrez for one match.

MLS Disciplinary Committee suspends Chicago Fire midfielder Brian Gutiérrez for one match and issued an undisclosed fine for violent conduct at Columbus on Saturday. He will miss this weekend’s match vs D.C. United.

  • Gutierrez wasn’t the only player fined by DisCo. The only thing I’m certain of is that the fine wasn’t big enough.
  • Congratulations to Chris and Alyssa Mueller on the birth of their new baby.

That will do it for today. Check back as we get you ready for the match this weekend. As for today, go USA!

Marco Pasalic’s performance honored, Americans playing midweek games, USMNT announces preliminary semifinal roster, and more.

Happy Tuesday, everyone. It was a rough start to the season for Orlando City, but that (hopefully) means that there’s nowhere to go but up. Regardless of if that proves to be true or not, the only way out is through, which means we need to start getting ready for Toronto FC on Saturday. We have lots to talk about today though, so let’s get into the links.

Marco Pasalic Recognized on TotM Bench

Marco Pasalic made his competitive debut for Orlando City in the team’s 4-2 loss to the Philadelphia Union on Saturday and was one of the bright spots in a rough performance as he scored both of the team’s goals. He was justifiably rewarded with a place on the bench in the first MLS Team of the Matchday of the 2025 season. In addition to the goals, the Croatian was a threat all evening, as he put four of his seven shots on target and also provided two key passes. Sean Rollins named him Man of the Match for his performance, and it’s nice to see him getting some love on the larger stage as well. Hopefully this is just the first of many times he earns weekly recognition like this.

Americans in Midweek Action

We’ve got a lot of Americans who will be taking part in games during the working week, so make sure you get everything you want to see marked down on your calendar. Things start Wednesday with Chris Richards, Matt Turner, and Crystal Palace hosting Aston Villa in the Premier League, while Antonee Robinson and Fulham travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wednesday sees Richy Ledezma and PSV Eindhoven host Go Ahead Eagles in the KNVB Cup semifinals, while PSV’s other three Americans remain out injured. Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, and Juventus will also host Empoli in a Coppa Italia quarterfinal. The other big match of the week is on Thursday, as Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah, and AC Milan try to bounce back from a wobbly run of form as they visit Bologna in Serie A play.

U.S. Announces Preliminary Nations League Roster

Along with the other three semifinalists in the competition, the United States Men’s National Team has released its preliminary roster for the upcoming Concacaf Nations League semifinals. Currently standing at 60, the roster will be cut down to 23 by March 10, with the USMNT taking on Panama on March 20. The usual suspects are all present, like Pulisic, McKennie, Robinson, Tyler Adams, and Matt Turner, with plenty of young names like Aidan Morris, Diego Kochen, Jackson Ragen, and Jack McGlynn. The most intrigue will take part at striker. While Josh Sargent is almost surely a lock to make the team, any one of Patrick Agyemang, Brandon Vazquez, and Jordan Morris could easily find themselves included or missing out.

Transfer Rumor Roundup

Despite most winter transfer windows being closed, there are still plenty of rumors we need to keep tabs on. First up, AC Milan is said to be monitoring the contract situations of stars Mike Maignan, Theo Hernandez, and Rafael Leao, and could be open to selling all three of them if the club does not qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season. Elsewhere, Vitor Roque’s proposed transfer from Barcelona to Palmeiras is reportedly off, as La Liga rules prevent Roque’s loan at Real Betis being cut short since the league is currently not in a registration period. Meanwhile, Manchester City has reportedly identified FC Porto netminder Diogo Costa as the man to replace current goalkeeper Ederson. Finally, Real Madrid is allegedly one of the teams in regular contact with Yamine Lamal’s agent, although Los Blancos have reportedly been told that Barcelona (unsurprisingly) refuses to sell him to its Spanish rivals.

Free Kicks

  • Former Orlando City manager Adrian Heath took a trip down memory lane during his time at the season opener on Saturday.
  • Inter&Co Stadium opened its doors just over eight years ago.
  • The Seattle Sounders have announced an initiative to try to get more new fans to attend games.

That’s all I have for you this morning. Vamos Orlando!

Lions fall to the Philadelphia Union, OCSC reportedly in talks to sign Agustin Soria, Sams starts in USWNT’s win over Australia, and more.

Hello, Mane Landers! I hope all is well with you down in Florida. It’s been another busy week for me covering high school playoff basketball and hockey. It was a tough weekend for Orlando City losing its home opener on Saturday, but let’s hope our Lions bounce back against Toronto FC on Saturday. Let’s also wish a happy belated birthday to Orlando City goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, who turned 35 on Sunday. We’ve got plenty to cover today so let’s get to the links.

Lions Fall to Philadelphia Union in Season Opener

Orlando City fell 4-2 to the Philadelphia Union on Saturday at Inter&Co Stadium in its opening match to kick off the 2025 MLS season. The Lions took an early lead in the first half, with Marco Pasalic scoring his first goal in his MLS debut. However, the Union scored four consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead. Pasalic added another goal late in the second half to make it 4-2, but the Union took home all three points. The loss ended Orlando’s four-match unbeaten streak against the Union. It’s also the first time the Lions have lost a match on opening day since joining Major League Soccer. Orlando’s next match will be on Saturday at home against Toronto FC.

Orlando City Signs Colin Guske and Gustavo Caraballo to Short-Term Deals

Orlando City announced before Saturday’s match against the Union that the club has signed midfielders Colin Guske and Gustavo Caraballo to short-term contracts. Both players were on the bench for Saturday’s match. Guske played with Orlando City B last season, scoring one goal, adding two assists, and starting in 24 out of 25 matches. Caraballo played two matches with OCB last season in MLS NEXT Pro. The 16-year-old midfielder won the 2023 U-15 Generation Adidas Cup Golden Boot, scoring four goals.

OCSC Reportedly in Talks to Sign Agustin Soria

Defensor Sporting midfielder Agustin Soria has been linked with a potential move to join Orlando City.

Defensor Sporting is reportedly awaiting a new offer from Orlando City after the initial offer was rejected. Reportedly, the two sides are in talks but have yet to agree on a transfer fee. Soria has played for Defensor Sporting since 2023 and has scored three goals and added six assists in 51 matches across all competitions. If a deal is reached between the two clubs, Soria could take up a third MLS U22 Initiative slot.

Lions Acquire General Allocation Money and Draft Pick in Trade

Orlando City announced Friday that the club has acquired $200,000 in General Allocation Money and a natural 2026 MLS SuperDraft first-round selection from the LA Galaxy. In exchange, the Lions sent the Galaxy a 2025 international roster slot.

USWNT Defeats Australia in SheBelieves Cup

Orlando Pride center back Emily Sams started and played the full 90 minutes, helping the U.S. Women’s National Team defeat Australia 2-1 on Sunday at State Farm Stadium to clinch a spot in the 2025 SheBelieves Cup final for the sixth consecutive time. It only took the USWNT 42 seconds for Lynn Biyendolo (nee Williams) to score the opening goal and record her 22nd international goal. Michelle Cooper came off the bench in the second half and scored to give the USWNT a 2-0 lead. Australia pulled one back late in the second half, but the USWNT held on for the win. On Wednesday, the USWNT will face Japan in the SheBelieves final at Snapdragon Stadium. Japan has the better goal differential of the two unbeaten teams after lopsided wins over Australia and Colombia.

MLS Opening Weekend Recap

The opening weekend of Major League Soccer is in the books. The Bruce Arena era in San Jose got off to a great start as the Earthquakes defeated Real Salt Lake 4-0. Diego Rossi scored twice for the Columbus Crew in a 4-2 win over the Chicago Fire. Emmanuel Latte Lath scored two goals as Atlanta United edged CF Montreal 3-2. FC Dallas earned a 2-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo as their head coach, Eric Quill, got his first win in MLS. LAFC, FC Cincinnati, and Austin FC all won their matches with a scoreline of 1-0 over Minnesota United, the New York Red Bulls, and Sporting Kansas City, respectively. Inter Miami escaped with a 2-2 draw against New York City FC, while D.C. United-Toronto FC and the Seattle Sounders-Charlotte FC matches ended in 2-2 draws. St. Lous City and the Colorado Rapids ended scoreless, as did Nashville SC vs. the New England Revolution. On Sunday, the Vancouver Whitecaps cruised past the Portland Timbers 4-1, while San Diego FC defeated the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy 2-0 on the road to seal the expansion side’s first ever win.
