Lion Links: 6/30/21
Hello, Mane Landers. I can’t believe we’re at the end of June and halfway through 2021. I hope you all are doing well down in Florida. I miss you guys up here in the Windy City. It’s been feeling a bit like Florida up here with plenty of rainy weather over the past week. Let’s get to the links!
Orlando City Prepares for the New York Red Bulls
The Lions are currently on a three-game winning streak and have won five out of their last six matches. The Lions will host the New York Red Bulls this Saturday as they try to stay near the top of the Eastern Conference. The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Exploria Stadium and you can watch the game on FOX 35 Plus or stream it on the LionNation TV app. The Red Bulls are currently in seventh place in the Eastern Conference and six different players have scored goals for them in recent matches. They also picked up their fourth clean sheet this season after a 0-0 draw with Atlanta United.
The Lions’ only loss this season came on the road against the Red Bulls on May 29, losing 2-1. At that time, Nani was suspended, several players were injured, and Daryl Dike was with the United States Men’s National Team. Nani and Dike should suit up this weekend as they look to keep the Lions’ win streak going. More reinforcements are coming for the Lions in the near future as well, with center back Rodrigo Schlegel returning to the team and forward Alexandre Pato progressing in his recovery.
Notes from training: Defender Rodrigo Schlegel is back to training in Orlando with the team.
Pato is also involved in contact drills this morning. Not full speed but looks confident and reactive when changing directions.

Ali Riley Gets Ready to Captain New Zealand
The upcoming Tokyo Olympics will be the first time Orlando Pride defender Ali Riley rejoins her New Zealand teammates since the COVID-19 pandemic began last year. Unlike other national teams, New Zealand has not played exhibition matches leading up to the Olympics. As a result, Riley has had to prepare for her role as New Zealand’s captain while playing with the Pride in Orlando.
“I’m definitely in a unique position not having any preparation with the national team,” Riley said. “But I know with full confidence that being here is the best place I can be if I’m not going to be with my national team in terms of preparing.”
New Zealand’s first match will be against Australia on July 21 in a group that also includes the United States and Sweden. The group stage scheduling will be similar to the Pride’s recent stretch of play where they played three games in seven days. In those matches, Riley played in all of them, starting twice, as she got some more familiarity with playing multiple matches in a week.
Orlando City’s U-17 Team Advances
Orlando’s U-17 squad won 2-1 against the LA Galaxy in the MLS NEXT Cup quarterfinals. Orlando’s Gonzalo Agustoni-Chagas scored from an unreal angle to give the Lions a 2-0 lead in a goal that has to be seen to be believed.
An absolutely RIDICULOUS goal from Gonzalo Agustoni-Chagas in the @MLSNEXT Playoffs 💥

The Young Lions have had an impressive run in the tournament, dispatching the New England Revolution and Shattuck St. Mary’s in earlier rounds. The team will now face the Sacramento Republic in the semifinals tomorrow night at 9:05 p.m. You can also check out the full highlights from Orlando’s win over the Galaxy below.

Euro 2020 Quarterfinals Are Set
After a scoreless first half, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling both scored to lift England to a 2-0 win over Germany. England fans went wild after the Three Lions won a Euro knockout stage game for the first time since 1996. For Joachim Low, his run as Germany’s manager is over after 15 years. Germany will need to retool its roster before the UEFA World Cup qualifiers starting up again in September.
In the later match-up, Sweden had its hands full as it was beaten 2-1 by Ukraine in extra time. Artem Dovbyk scored the second-latest goal in European championship history to propel Ukraine to the quarterfinals for the first time.
The next pair of matches will begin on Friday when Switzerland plays Spain at noon before Belgium faces Italy at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Czech Republic takes on Denmark at noon and England plays Ukraine at 3 p.m.

- The Lions moved up to third in the league’s power rankings, now sitting behind the Seattle Sounders and the New England Revolution.
- Orlando’s Dike and right back Michael Halliday were both noted as young MLS players who did well this past week.
- The MLS All-Star Skills Challenge will return this year and is set to take place on Aug. 24, the day before the MLS All-Star Game. LAFC’s Carlos Vela and the Galaxy’s Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez are the only confirmed names for the challenge at this time, but Nani is sure to be a strong candidate considering his performance in the event back in 2019.
- Former Lion Hadji Barry scored four goals across two matches this week for Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and was voted USL Championship Player of the Week.
- USMNT winger Konrad de la Fuente is leaving FC Barcelona and will sign a four-year contract with Marseille.
- The U.S. Soccer Federation announced its “One Nation” initiatives as part of its efforts to increase community engagement and uplift underserved areas while the USWNT prepares for the Olympics.
- The San Jose Earthquakes have parted ways with General Manager Jesse Fioranelli.
- The Netherlands and manager Frank de Boer have agreed to part ways after their shocking loss to the Czech Republic in the knockout stages.
That will do it for me, Mane Landers. Enjoy your Wednesday, take care of yourselves, and I’ll see you next time.

Martin Ojeda earns recognition, Orlando City prepares for Atlanta United, Orlando Pride set to face the Denver Summit, and more.
Happy Friday, Mane Landers! There’s plenty of soccer ahead of us to look forward to this weekend, including a pair of games on Saturday. Apart from the soccer, I’ll be spending the next few days tearing my way through some mystery novels for a book club and trying out a new cinnamon roll pancake recipe. Cooking tends to either go swimmingly or horribly for me, so keep any spare fingers crossed for me. For now though, let’s get to the links!
Martin Ojeda Earns Praise After Winning Goal
Orlando City star Martin Ojeda’s diving header secured a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Union was chosen as the MLS Moment of the Matchday. Given how a league-record 58 goals were scored during Wednesday’s slate of games, it’s an impressive honor for Ojeda to receive. That winner was Ojeda’s second goal of the game and he has now scored 10 game-winning goals in his time as a Lion. The 27-year-old also made the bench of the MLS Team of the Matchday for his role in the win.
Orlando City Prepares for Atlanta United
The Lions will look to keep the good times rolling on Saturday when they play Atlanta United in a rivalry game at home. While its defense has been a sieve all season, Orlando’s offense is finding its footing and should benefit from Marco Pasalic’s return from injury. Following this match, the two teams will turn right back around and face each other at Inter&Co Stadium again on Tuesday in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals. It will be interesting to see what kind of lineup each coach opts for on Saturday given the short time between the matches.
Orlando Pride Face the Denver Summit on Saturday
The Orlando Pride are also in action on Saturday and will play the Denver Summit in the club’s first-ever road game against the expansion side. The Pride are coming off of a frustrating 2-1 loss on the road to the Boston Legacy on Tuesday, while the Summit’s last game was on Saturday, when they thrashed the Houston Dash 4-1. While Barbra Banda leads the league with eight goals so far this season, Denver’s Natasha Flint has scored in three consecutive games and the Pride will need to find a way to stop her from extending that streak on Saturday. Other notable NWSL games to watch this weekend include the Washington Spirit putting their five-game win streak on the line tonight against the San Diego Wave and Sunday’s matchup between the Portland Thorns and Angel City FC.
Sam Kerr Officially Exiting Chelsea
Australian striker Sam Kerr announced that she’s leaving Chelsea once her contract is up following this Women’s Super League season. She’s played for Chelsea for the past six years, scoring 115 goals across all competitions and winning the league title five times and the Golden Boot twice. The 32-year-old has been linked with a return to the NWSL to join the Denver Summit earlier this year, so we’ll see if that comes to pass. If so, I’m glad the Pride would already have both of their matches against the Summit out of the way by the time of her arrival.

- Carlo Ancelotti has renewed his contract as Brazil’s coach so that it lasts through the 2030 World Cup.
- Gotham FC is reportedly in talks to move its games to New York City FC’s new stadium in Queens for the 2028 NWSL season.
- For the first time, a halftime show will take place during this year’s World Cup final and it will feature Madonna, Shakira, and BTS.
- Didier Deschamps announced France’s roster for the upcoming World Cup and Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is one of the more notable names not on the list. Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier is also absent, while Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser was called up after a great season.
- Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma will miss the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury that may keep him out of Japan’s World Cup plans as well.
That’s all I have for you today. I hope you all have a fantastic Friday and rest of your weekend!

Orlando City beats the Philadelphia Union at home, MLS All-Star voting begins, Luan Silva called up, and more.
I’m not sure if my heart can take much more of these Wednesday wins by Orlando City, but it will have to persevere if it means the Lions keep winning. Now, if only we could find a way to trick the team into thinking every day is Wednesday. Before we get to today’s links, let’s all wish a happy birthday to Orlando City forward Justin Ellis! The Homegrown Player started in last night’s game and turns 19 today.
Orlando City Wins in Dramatic Fashion
The Cardiac Cats were back in full force Wednesday night, with Orlando City scoring late to beat the Philadelphia Union 4-3 at home. The Lions never trailed at any point of the match, but it was a rollercoaster of emotions as they created plenty of chances but allowed the Union to come back time and time again. The defense continues to bleed goals, even if against one of the worst offenses in the league this season. Regardless, a win is a win, and Orlando will look to carry this momentum into Saturday’s rivalry match against Atlanta United.
Jeff Radcliffe, Original Voice of Orlando City, Loses Battle with Cancer
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Jeff Radcliffe following his passing. Radcliffe was the original broadcast voice of the club, starting in Orlando’s inaugural USL season and continuing for many years across multiple platforms. Radcliffe had fought an initial cancer diagnosis that went into remission, but he soon faced another battle with the disease. We here at The Mane Land were appreciative of Radcliffe’s time and encouragement in our earliest days and we consider him a friend. We are saddened by his loss. The club honored Radcliffe prior to Wednesday night’s win over Philadelphia.
MLS All-Star Voting Begins
Voting for this year’s MLS All- Star team has officially begun and will stay open through May 21. This year’s MLS All-Star Game will take place in Charlotte on July 29 and will once again pit the best in MLS against the best players from Liga MX. Of the 26 players who will make up this year’s team, 11 will be voted in, 13 will be selected by Charlotte FC Head Coach Dean Smith, and the other two will be picked by MLS Commissioner Don Garber. Former Lion Alex Freeman was voted in last year and Martin Ojeda may be the Lion with the best chance at earning the honor in 2026. Make sure to vote!
Luan Silva Called Up for International Tournament
Orlando City academy goalkeeper Luan Silva was called up for the United States U-15 National Team’s roster for the 2026 Vlatko Marković International Tournament in Croatia. Silva has been stellar for Orlando’s youth teams and it’s nice to see him continuing to earn international attention as well. The U.S. will face South Korea in the tournament’s group stage on May 19 before facing Switzerland on May 20 and Portugal on May 22. The Chicago Fire’s Alex Bayraktarov is the only other goalkeeper on the roster, so hopefully Silva can get some solid playing time in Europe.
Keeping Up With European Title Races
All of the drama is in Great Britain, with the Scottish Premiership and English Premier League title races coming down to the wire. It looked as if Hearts would’ve clinched things in Scotland with a game to spare after a 3-0 win over Falkirk, but Celtic scored deep in stoppage time after American defender Auston Trusty won a penalty to beat Motherwell 3-2 and remain just a point behind Hearts. Celtic and Hearts play for the title on Saturday.
Manchester City won 3-0 against Crystal Palace to stay two points behind Arsenal in the EPL title race with two games left for both teams. At the other end of the table, the relegation fight between Tottenham and West Ham remains tight. Elsewhere in Europe, Paris Saint-Germain beat Lens 2-0 to clinch the Ligue 1 title, Inter Milan won 2-0 against Lazio to lift the Italian Cup trophy and complete the double, and Barcelona’s ambitious quest for 100 points in a season fell short after a 1-0 loss to Alaves.

- Julian Hall became the youngest player in MLS history to score a hat trick, lifting the New York Red Bulls to a 3-2 win over the Columbus Crew. The 18-year-old now has nine goals so far in this breakout season for him.
- The NCAA announced that the Division I men’s soccer season will be split so that it takes place in both the fall and spring, starting in the fall of 2027.
- The Chicago Fire’s new stadium, which is set to open in 2028, will be known as McDonald’s Park after a partnership between the club and the fast-food giant. Forgive the pun, but I think this makes St. Louis City their archrival.
- Just a few months after resigning from the position due to a family health issue, Dick Advocaat was hired by Curacao once more to serve as its head coach before the World Cup. The 78-year-old will be the oldest head coach in World Cup history when Curacao makes its tournament debut against Germany on June 14.
- If you’re a tactic fanatic, you’ll love this analytical dive into the impediment of goalkeepers on corner kicks in the EPL. From the graphics to the term “meat wall era,” the article is a fantastic read.
- FIFA is reportedly axing the single-player walkouts that were done before Club World Cup games, although another new format may be coming. I have no clue why FIFA is intent on fiddling with that part of the proceedings, but I’m sure it will end up being sponsored by the time the World Cup gets here.
That’s all I have for you this time around. I hope you all have a good Thursday and rest of your week!

Orlando City hosts the Philadelphia Union tonight, Orlando Pride defeated on the road, MLS player salary information released, and more.
Not only have we made it to the middle of the week, but we have Orlando City soccer waiting for us tonight. It’s been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster of ups and downs this year when it comes to supporting our favorite players in purple, but I’m still excited for some midweek soccer. But for now, let’s dive into today’s links!
Orlando City Hosts the Philadelphia Union Tonight
After a loss on the road to CF Montreal on Saturday, Orlando City will aim to bounce back when it plays the Philadelphia Union tonight at Inter&Co Stadium. Both teams have struggled mightily this year and Philadelphia sits at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with just one win from 12 games. While the Union have only scored a measly 10 goals this season, the Lions have conceded a whopping 34 times. It’s the age-old battle between a movable object and a stoppable force. Tonight’s match will be the first of three consecutive home games across all competitions for the Lions, so hopefully they can start this homestand off with a win.
Orlando Pride Lose Late to Boston Legacy FC
The Orlando Pride don’t have anything to show from a frustrating 2-1 loss on the road to the Boston Legacy. The Pride struck first from the penalty spot and carried that lead into halftime, but Boston equalized in the second half and then scored a penalty kick of its own in stoppage time to win it late. It’s a brutal loss for an Orlando team that has struggled with consistency and has yet to win twice in a row this season. There’s not much time for the Pride to regroup before their next match, as they’re set to take on the Denver Summit on the road on Saturday.
MLSPA Releases Player Salary Information
The Major League Soccer Players Association shared the salary information for players under contract as of April 16. Designated Players Martin Ojeda and Marco Pasalic are the only Lions with base salaries over $1 million, with each having a salary of $1.6 million. As for some of the new faces in the City Beautiful this year, Braian Ojeda’s salary is $725,000, Maxime Crepeau’s is $600,000, and Tiago’s is $500,000.
There’s no prize for guessing which player has the highest salary in the league, with Lionel Messi’s $25 million salary at more than double that of Son Heung-Min’s $10.3 million. In third is another Miami player, with Rodrigo De Paul’s base salary listed as $7.5 million. It at least makes Orlando’s recent win in Miami feel a bit sweeter.
Orlando City B Makes MLS NEXT Pro Power Rankings
In the latest MLS NEXT Pro power rankings, which only list the top 10 teams in the league, Orlando City B placed eighth. This comes following a 2-0 win over Atlanta United 2 as OCB extended its unbeaten run to four games. Harvey Sarajian and Gustavo Caraballo have led OCB’s attack so far this season, while Issah Haruna has now scored in two consecutive games as well. Goalkeeper Luca Maxim was also stellar between the sticks for his first professional clean sheet in that win against Atlanta. It’s nice to see the Young Lions receive some recognition and they will have a chance to keep their streak going when they play New England Revolution II on the road on Sunday.

- San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Niko Tsakiris underwent successful groin surgery and is expected to miss three or four months. The 20-year-old has been great this season, recording three goals and seven assists while leading the league with 34 created chances.
- American midfielder Aidan Morris and Middlesbrough were beaten 2-1 by Southampton in the playoffs for promotion to the English Premier League. Shea Charles scored in extra time to book Southampton’s ticket to the final against Hull City at Wembley Stadium.
- The United States Men’s National Team’s roster for the World Cup is released later this month and Giovanni Reyna is one of the biggest names on the bubble. A goal for Borussia Monchengladbach this past Saturday likely didn’t hurt his chances.
- Cristo Fernandez, who you may know as Dani Rojas from Ted Lasso, has signed a contract to play for El Paso Locomotive in the USL Championship after a trial with the team. El Paso is life?
- Arsenal defender Ben White will miss the remainder of the season due to MCL damage and won’t be available for England for the World Cup either.
- Slavia Prague was handed a 3-0 forfeit loss after its fans invaded the pitch in stoppage time against rival Sparta Prague. The club was also fined and will play its next four home games without fans.
That’s all I have for you this time around. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday. Go Orlando!
