How’s it going, Mane Landers? I hope you are all excited for the start of the MLS season this weekend. It does feel a bit weird having the season begin so early in the year but I’m not complaining too much. Let’s dive into today’s news from around the soccer world.
Orlando City Prepares for CF Montreal
The Lions have never lost a season opener and will hope that trend continues when they take on Montreal in Exploria Stadium this Sunday at 1 p.m. While most of Orlando’s defensive core remains intact from last season, the offense will look a bit different after the departures of Nani, Daryl Dike, and Chris Mueller this off-season. The club added Uruguayan winger Facundo Torres and Austrian forward Ercan Kara during the off-season and it will be interesting to see how they do on Sunday. Extratime co-host David Gass named Torres as a contender for MLS Newcomer of the Year.
“If I’m not going with Shaqiri, I’m going to go with Facundo Torres,” Gass said. “They brought in a center forward, [Mauricio] Pereyra’s not a high-level chance creator but he will cover a ton of ground and be active for you. I think Torres, you’re looking at a guy who’s already in the Uruguayan national team, a young player. I think there’s pressure but it’s not 100% on his shoulders. And Orlando has space for him to be successful.”
The last time Orlando and Montreal faced off was on Decision Day of last season as the Lions traveled to Canada and came away with all three points. While the Lions will be well rested heading into the match, Montreal is coming off of a huge 3-0 win against Santos Laguna in the Concacaf Champions League earlier this week.
MLS NEXT Pro Schedule Announced
Orlando City B’s upcoming schedule was released and the Young Lions will play their first game in MLS NEXT Pro at home on March 26 against Chicago Fire FC II. They will then host NYCFC II on April 3 before heading down the road to take on Inter Miami II on April 10. All 12 of OCB’s home games will be played at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee. The 24-game season will wrap up on Sept. 18, with OCB hosting Toronto FC II. The top four teams from each conference will qualify for the playoffs and you’ll be able to watch every game at www.mlsnextpro.com.
Russian Invasion’s Impact on Soccer
Following Russia’s attack on Ukraine, UEFA is reportedly set to move the Champions League final currently scheduled to take place on May 28 in Saint Petersburg. UEFA released a statement that its Executive Committee will meet today to evaluate the situation.
Following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine, the UEFA president has called an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee for 10:00 CET on Friday 25 February, in order to evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions.

The soccer federations from Poland, the Czech Republic, and Sweden issued a joint statement to FIFA for World Cup qualifiers not to be played in Russia. Poland is currently set to take on Russia in Moscow on March 24 and the winner will face the winning side between the Czech Republic and Sweden. Ukraine’s World Cup qualifying matches are already set to be played on the road.
The Ukrainian Premier League was suspended indefinitely after martial law was declared and Brazilian players in the league issued an appeal to their government for support. After scoring the first of two goals for Atalanta, Ukrainian midfielder Ruslan Manilovskyi revealed a shirt stating “no war in Ukraine.”
A strong goal with an even stronger message.

Russian striker Fedor Smolov shared a similar statement on social media and German club Schalke 04 is removing Russian sponsor Gazprom from its jerseys.
Europa League Knockout Stage Continues
FC Barcelona advanced to the next round of the Europa League knockout stage after scoring three goals in the first half in a convincing 4-2 win on the road against Napoli. RB Leipzig also came up with a big win by defeating Real Sociedad 3-1 to move on while Rangers held Borussia Dortmund to a 2-2 draw to advance on aggregate. Moldovan club FC Sheriff’s tournament run comes to an end after losing a penalty shootout to Braga in Portugal. Atalanta, Sevilla, Porto, and Real Betis are all also moving on to the next round, where they will be drawn today against group winners such as West Ham and Bayer Leverkusen.
In the Europa Conference League, Leicester City and Marseille both advanced and could wind up against AS Roma in today’s draw for the next round.

Justin Ellis named to USMNT roster for the first time, Orlando City players called up, MLS club profiles unveiled, and more.
Happy Friday, Mane Landers! There’s plenty of soccer to look forward to this weekend, with both the Orlando Pride and Orlando City in action on Saturday before Orlando City B finishes its regular season on Sunday. Hopefully, we’ll have plenty to celebrate over the next few days. But for now, let’s jump right into today’s links from around the soccer world!
Justin Ellis Named to First USMNT Roster
United States Men’s National Team Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino called up 28 players for training camp ahead of the team’s first friendlies since the World Cup. Orlando City forward Justin Ellis has had a breakout season at just 19 years old and is one of 13 uncapped players to earn a spot on the roster. Cavan Sullivan, Zavier Gozo, and Julian Hall are a few of the other young talents to keep an eye out for during these matches. Former Lion Alex Freeman, who scored for the U.S. at the World Cup, was called up as well. The U.S. will take on Peru on Sept. 26 at Inter.co Stadium, so hopefully fans will be able to see some familiar faces. Following that match, the Yanks will play against Chile on Sept. 29 in St. Louis before friendlies against Mexico on Oct. 3 and Canada on Oct. 6.
Lions Called Up For International Duty
Ellis isn’t the only Lion who will be with their national team over the next couple of weeks. Midfielder Wilder Cartagena was called up for Peru’s friendlies, along with former Lions Pedro Gallese and Yoshimar Yotun.
Tyrese Spicer was called up for Trinidad & Tobago’s upcoming Concacaf Nations League matches with spots in the quarterfinals up for grabs. Trinidad & Tobago will play against Haiti and the Dominican Republic before a pair of matches against Curacao.
Defender David Brekalo was also called up for Nations League games and will head to Europe for Slovenia’s matches in League B against Scotland, Switzerland, and North Macedonia.
Orlando City’s Club Profile Revealed
MLS released the club roster profiles for each team as of Sept. 15. These profiles have been a great way to see how each team’s roster is constructed, while also showing the contract and option details for each player. The Lions have all Designated Player and MLS U22 Initiative slots filled, with Eduard Atuesta, David Brekalo, and Braian Ojeda listed as TAM players. The profile also reveals that Orlando has $1.86 million in 2026 General Allocation Money remaining, and it’s hard not to wonder about the improvements that could have been made to the team with that money.
Vlatko Andonovski Joins the Chicago Stars
The Chicago Stars have hired Vlatko Andonovski as the club’s chief soccer officer to right the ship after another rough season. Already eliminated from playoff contention, the Stars have only won five games so far this season and fired Martin Sjögren as head coach last month. Andonovski joins the Stars after terminating his contract with the Kansas City Current on Sept. 7. The former United States Women’s National Team head coach has had plenty of success in women’s soccer and it’ll be interesting to see if he can turn things around in Chicago.

- The Orlando Pride remained in 11th in CBS Sports’s NWSL power rankings following their 2-2 draw on the road against the Kansas City Current.
- The San Diego Wave signed 18-year-old attacker Melanie Barcenas to a contract extension through the 2028 season. She’s been enjoying a breakout season in San Diego, scoring six goals so far this season.
- Despite being called up to the USMNT, Julian Hall stated that he remains open to playing for Poland, which is where his mother is from.
- From the heavyweight match between Roma and Inter in Serie A to the derby match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, here are the matchups to watch for in Europe this weekend.

Lions lose in Ohio, Pride part ways with Gabi Nunes, Barbra Banda’s league lessons, and more.
Well, Wednesday night could have gone better. It’s disappointing that we won’t be able to see the U.S. Open Cup final in Orlando, but there’s still plenty of soccer left to play this year for us to get excited about. Before we dive into Orlando City’s game and the rest of today’s links, let’s all wish a happy birthday to Orlando Pride defender Kerry Abello!
Orlando City Falls in Columbus
The Lions were eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup after losing 2-1 on the road to the Columbus Crew in the semifinals. Orlando City nemesis Josef Martinez gave the Crew an early lead, but the Lions managed to level things before halftime through Martin Ojeda. Unfortunately, Antoine Griezmann had to exit the match and the Lions were subpar without him, conceding another goal and failing to muster a single shot on target, let alone find another equalizer. All attention now turns towards securing a spot in the playoffs with nine games left in the regular season.
Orlando Pride, Gabi Nunes Agree to Part Ways
The Orlando Pride announced Wednesday that the club and forward Gabi Nunes have mutually agreed to terminate her contract. The 29-year-old had only just signed with the Pride on Aug. 4 on a contract through the 2026 season, but she managed just two appearances for 16 total minutes while in Orlando. Nunes joined the club after stints in Europe with Aston Villa, Levante UD, and Madrid CFF.
Barbra Banda Details Her Time in the NWSL
Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda signed a new contract with the club through the 2029 season and she spoke on how she’s grown as a player since joining the league in 2024.
“Honestly, I’ve learned a lot from this league. I would say it’s one of the best leagues in the world because the teams are so competitive, and you never go into a game relaxed,” Banda said. “You need to up your game each and every time. You need to be mentally fit, physically fit. It’s a battle you need to win, and you have to be smart at the end of the day. I feel I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve improved myself in so many ways. And, not forgetting my teammates, who have helped me to improve, and the technical staff as well. I can feel it myself, this level, it’s different.”
Banda has been phenomenal for the Pride, scoring 41 goals in 62 appearances across all competitions and helping the club win the double in her first year in the league. She’s been one of the best strikers in the league’s history, and it’s great to see her sticking around in the City Beautiful.
U.S. Eliminated From U-20 Women’s World Cup
The United States U-20 Women’s National Team drew 1-1 against Brazil but lost in the ensuing penalty shootout in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup’s round of 16. Brazil took the lead in the 59th minute off of a corner kick, but the U.S. equalized in the 63rd minute, thanks to a strike from Seattle Reign midfielder Ainsley McCammon. The Yanks made four of their attempts in the shootout, but Brazil ultimately prevailed by making all five. It’s a tough way to exit the tournament for the U.S., which was matched up against Brazil in the knockout stage after finishing third in its group.

- The NWSL reportedly received eight complaints of either sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, or retaliation so far this year according to reports, but no club names were available.
- The Kansas City Current traded rookie forward Gianna Paul to the North Carolina Courage in exchange for $150,000 in intra-league funds.
- Chelsea announced that Todd Boehly and Mark Walter have sold their stakes in the club, giving Clearlake Capital full control in the process.

Orlando City’s Open Cup match day, the Summer of Maxime Crepeau, USMNT news, and more.
Welcome to Wednesday, Mane Landers. It’s match day as Orlando City looks to advance to the final of the 2026 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. If the Lions are able to win tonight, they will host the final at Inter.co Stadium. That is something I’d greatly like to see again. Hopefully, Orlando City can continue the good run of form for at least another match. For now, let’s get to the links.
Orlando’s Open Cup Continues
Antione Griezmann got a whole 25 minutes or so of rest in the match against Toronto FC. As such, I know he will be fully rested for the U.S. Open Cup match against the Columbus Crew. Orlando City is one victory away from playing for a second Open Cup trophy. St. Louis City and the Colorado Rapids play in the other semifinal match. Orlando City and the Columbus Crew are both looking for a second title in the competition.
Summer of Crepeau
Maxime Crepeau has professionally had a great summer since the World Cup began. He was the starting goalkeeper for Canada and acquitted himself well. Upon returning to Orlando City, he has been one of the best players on the team. He did, sadly, lose his father earlier this month, and as such, he wasn’t called up for Canada’s fall friendlies. As tough a time as it must be for Crepeau, he has performed admirably for Orlando City.
Orlando Pride News
The Orlando Pride maintained their 11th place in the standings and in the Goal.com NWSL power rankings. Of course, the future is brighter thank to the Pride signing Barbra Banda through 2029. On the back of that good news, season ticket memberships for 2027 are now on sale. Marta made an appearance in the latest match, and she and former Pride striker Alex Morgan, along with Crystal Dunn, sent an open letter to FIFA asking the organization to line up the U-20 Women’s World Cup with the international calendar.
USMNT News
U.S. Soccer has selected TQL Stadium in Cincinnati to host the home leg of the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal round in November. The opponent will be determined following the conclusion of the Concacaf Nations League group stage League A matches. Unfortunately, Diego Luna won’t be available for selection, as he will be out for months due to a knee injury that may require surgery. Over in Europe, other USMNT players are getting ready for the Europa League competition.

- Former Orlando Pride defender Caitlin Cosme has signed with Crystal Palace on a one-year deal.
- Former Orlando City striker Cyle Larin has seven goals in seven league matches for Southampton to lead the English Championship.
- Racing Louisville FC midfielder Savannah DeMelo is suing after suffering a cardiac arrest on the field during a match in September 2025 against the Seattle Reign. University of Louisville Health and two physicians are the defendants and DeMelo’s suit alleges they failed to diagnose a heart condition that led to the incident.
- Catarina Macario will miss the remainder of the NWSL season as she has been placed on Season Ending Injury list due to a knee injury.
- Other USWNT players have seen their stock rise or fall.
That will do it for today. You can follow The Mane Land on Bluesky for live match updates, and we will also have a recap of the match tonight. Vamos Orlando!
