Hello, Mane Landers. I hope all is well with you down in Florida. I’ve been busy at work up here in Chicago but am trying to keep up with what’s happening in the soccer world. There is plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.
Orlando Pride Take On the North Carolina Courage Tonight
The Orlando Pride will host the North Carolina Courage tonight at Exploria Stadium for a midweek NWSL match-up. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and you can watch tonight’s match on Paramount+. This match will also feature the Pride’s inaugural “Woof Wednesday,” as fans can bring their dogs to the stadium. Both clubs lost this past weekend, with the Pride falling 2-0 to Racing Louisville FC while the Courage lost 2-1 at home to OL Reign. The Pride will aim for the season sweep tonight after they defeated the Courage 2-1 on the road on May 18. Pride forward Erika Tymrak is one goal away from reaching 20 in her NWSL career, while Darian Jenkins needs one more goal to reach 10 across all NWSL competitions. If midfielder Gunny Jónsdóttir plays in each of the Pride’s final three games this season then she will have 100 appearances across all NWSL competitions.
Cesar Araujo Makes MLS 2022 22 under 22 List
MLS released its 2022 22 under 22 list, and Orlando City midfielder Cesar Araujo is ranked 13th. The 21-year-old has been solid as a rock in the midfield for Orlando, playing 2,197 minutes so far in his first season with the Lions. FC Dallas forward Jesus Ferreira topped the list, with 18 goals and five assists this season. Other notable players on the list include Chicago Fire goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina, New York City FC’s Talles Magno, and Atlanta United midfielder Thiago Almada.
Facundo Torres Recognized for Strong Week
Facundo Torres is at it again, getting an honorable mention in the list of the best young players performers over the past week. He had strong performances against both Atlanta and Toronto FC, contributing three key passes and drawing eight fouls across those two matches. The Uruguayan scored Orlando’s first goal in the club’s 4-0 victory over Toronto, continuing his strong run of form as Orlando looks to secure its spot in the postseason.
Central Florida Crusaders Sign Bitielo Jean Jacques
The Central Florida Crusaders have signed another familiar face, as the new National Indoor Soccer League team added former Lion and Haitian national team defender Bitielo Jean Jacques to the squad. Jean Jacques played for the Lions in 2014 during their final season in USL Pro, making 10 appearances for the club. Since then, Jean Jacques has played with Orlando-based amateur clubs Kraze United and the Central Florida Panthers in the NPSL. Jean Jacques also coaches at Orlando City’s academy.

Leagues Cup preview, Americans in midweek action, open letter addressing Gianni Infantino, and more.
Good morning, everyone. It wasn’t a particularly pleasant weekend for Orlando’s soccer teams, but fortunately, opportunities to change the vibes are right around the corner. Orlando City B plays NYCFC II in a few hours, Orlando City plays San Luis tomorrow and FC Cincinnati on Saturday, and the Orlando Pride are in action against the Portland Thorns on Saturday night as well. We’ve got lots to talk over this morning, so let’s get into it.
Leagues Cup Preview
Leagues Cup will begin its final round of group stage games later today, and there are several storylines to keep an eye on. Most prominent among them is the match between Austin FC and Club America, as each team currently sits first in its respective table. Myrto Uzuni’s hat trick helped Austin bury Puebla in its second match, and the Verde and Black are now in great position to advance. Before we get to that match on Thursday though, FC Cincinnati plays Atlas this evening to kick off the last round of games. Cincy sits fourth in the MLS table and therefore has plenty to play for, while Atlas has no points and has already been eliminated from contention. With Cincy visiting the City Beautiful on Saturday, Orlando fans should be hoping for FCC’s key players to rack up a lot of minutes tonight.
Americans in Midweek Action
Plenty of Americans will be taking part in matches during the working week, so make sure you’ve got everything noted down on your calendar. Tanner Tessmann and Lyon kick things off later today as they try to overturn a 2-1 first leg deficit against Sparta Prague in UEFA Champions Leauge qualifying. Things continue with Brenden Aaronson and Leeds playing Manchester United in a friendly on Wednesday, while Malik Tillman and Bayer Leverkusen have a friendly of their own against Nottingham Forest. Things wrap up with some American-on-American violence on Friday, as Johnny Cardoso and Atletico Madrid play Marseille in a friendly, while Folarin Balogun and Monaco face Haji Wright and Coventry in a tune-up game.
Confederations Write Letter Criticizing Gianni Infantino
Concacaf, UEFA, and AFC have written a joint open letter soccer as a whole, in which they accuse FIFA president Gianni Infantino of betraying the trust of the confederations and engaging in deceptive practices. They condemned the plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, and called both FIFA’s integrity and Infantino’s running of the organization into question. U.S. Soccer put out its own statement on Sunday in support of Concacaf’s stance. The letter also urged FIFA to conduct an independent review of the proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup, while calling for accountability and openness among Infantino and the rest of FIFA’s leadership.
Transfer Rumor Roundup
There are plenty of transfer rumors to catch up on this morning, so let’s get straight into it. We start in England, where Crystal Palace is reportedly finalizing the signing of Zavier Gozo from Real Salt Lake. In Spain, Atletico Madrid has reportedly submitted an offer in the area of €35 million to Lille for winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo. Meanwhile, Endrick will supposedly be staying at Real Madrid this season following discussions between himself, the club, and Head Coach Jose Mourinho. Barcelona ha reportedly rejected a €50 million offer for Ferran Torres from Paris Saint-Germain, as the Catalonian club wants the fee to be structured differently than PSG’s initial proposal. Finally, in a rather unexpected bit of news, Tom Bogert reports that CF Montreal is signing Alexis Sanchez as a Designated Player.

Braian Ojeda undergoes foot surgery, Orlando Pride play Racing Louisville tonight, NWSL midseason predictions, and more.
Happy Friday, Mane Landers! I’m hesitant to get excited about back-to-back days of Orlando soccer considering how last weekend went, but we have the Orlando Pride in action tonight and Orlando City playing Saturday in a pair of home games. Keep every finger crossed, folks. But for now, let’s get to the links!
Braian Ojeda Undergoes Foot Surgery
Orlando City announced that midfielder Braian Ojeda underwent successful surgery to repair a Jones fracture in his right foot. It’s the same foot injury that Robin Jansson dealt with earlier this year and Ojeda is expected to return in the fall. The Lions traded for Ojeda in January and he has started in 21 games across all competitions this year, recording a goal and six assists. He also represented Paraguay at the World Cup this summer and played in the match against Germany in the round of 32.
Orlando Pride Host Racing Louisville Tonight
The Orlando Pride are coming off of a disastrous 5-0 defeat on the road against the North Carolina Courage and will look to bounce back tonight when they host Racing Louisville. Although Louisville has only won four games this season, two of those victories have come in their past three games and one was at the Pride’s expense. We’ll see if Orlando’s offense will be able to make some noise against a Louisville defense that has conceded a league-high 34 goals this season. Orlando Pride Head Coach Seb Hines spoke on the need for a result tonight at home.
“When we come home and we play in front of our fans, we need to put a show on and we need to really bounce back from a disappointing result against North Carolina,” Hines said. “We let ourselves down, we let the fans down, and we need to respond in the best way and that’s by getting three points this Friday.”
NWSL Midseason Predictions
We’ve reached the second half of the NWSL season and it’s a nice time to take a look at the various award races across the league. While Barbra Banda being away at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has opened the door for other forwards to make up ground in the Golden Boot race, her absence has at least proven just how valuable she is to her team amid the Pride’s free fall without her. It doesn’t hurt her case for MVP, though she faces stiff competition from Temwa Chawinga, Trinity Rodman, and Mina Tanaka. The Pride likely don’t have any contenders for the other awards given how the season has gone, but anything can happen.
Keeping Up With the Americans Abroad
As we near the return of European soccer, there are plenty of Americans with new teams to keep an eye out for this year. ESPN graded some of the moves by Yanks this summer, with Max Arfsten and Sebastian Berhalter’s moves from MLS to Middlesbrough receiving decent marks. It’ll be interesting to see how Giovanni Reyna does now that he’s in Strasbourg, and we’ll see if goalkeeper Diego Kochen can make an impact with Lyngby Boldklub in Denmark. La Liga starts next weekend, which means we’ll be able to watch Alex Freeman with Villarreal after his strong World Cup performance.
