Happy Saturday, Mane Landers. It is playoff-eve for fans of the Lions. Have the nerves started to kick in yet? Are you staying calm, cool, and collected? I don’t know about you, but I have an optimistic outlook that Orlando will do just enough to take this match to spot kicks and ultimately walk into the next round behind a breathtaking El Pulpo performance. Maybe I’m a bit delusional, but after witnessing these Lions fight back to get into the playoffs I find it hard to believe they won’t do it again.

Before we head into the links, let’s all give a round of applause and thanks to City’s original captain and one who helped build this team’s backbone of hard work, grit, and grind attitude — Kaká. Today marks five years since his final match. Now, the links!

Orlando City Ready for Round One

Orlando City is heading to Stade Saputo to battle Eastern Conference regular-season runner-up CF Montréal in Round 1 of the 2022 MLS Cup playoffs tomorrow. The match is set to kick off at 8 p.m. and can be viewed on ESPN for those of us not traveling across the Canadian border. Sunday marks the start of the Lions’ third-consecutive appearance in the MLS Cup playoffs, all of which have come under Head Coach Oscar Pareja’s tenure.

“We are in October already and looking to have a good match at this time after the achievement of qualifying with this group,” Head Coach Oscar Pareja said. “I think it is even more important to think about advancing and that is where we are now. The group is very optimistic and very confident going to Montréal and fighting for our ticket to the next round.”

The Lions have won two of their last three meetings with CF Montréal, including a 2-0 victory at Exploria Stadium in the 2022 season opener. Orlando City also defeated CF Montréal on Decision Day in 2021 by way of a 2-0 scoreline to clinch a spot in the 2021 MLS Cup playoffs. In the two sides’ most recent match-up in May, CF Montréal earned a 4-1 victory at home. Should the Lions win tomorrow, they will play the winner of New York City FC and Inter Miami CF in the Eastern Conference semifinals on Oct. 23.

All Eyes on Torres

Orlando City winger Facundo Torres was one of many of the under-23 standouts to consistently be recognized throughout the 2022 regular season. With nine goals and 10 assists, he has been one of the most potent parts of the Orlando attack this season. While few pundits are giving Orlando City much of a chance in their first-round visit to CF Montréal on Sunday evening, Torres will be key in the upset if it were to happen.

On the opposite side of the ball, CF Montréal midfielder Ismaël Koné is a young central midfielder who turned 20 in June and has already notched 1,587 league minutes. He has been turning heads down the stretch, boasting a stat line of two goals and five assists, an 86.3% pass completion rate, 58 accurate long balls, and 11 key passes.

U-17 Women’s World Cup Results

The United States Under-17 Women’s National Team tied Brazil 1-1 in its second group stage match of the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. A goal from forward Nicollette Kiorpes earned the United States a valuable point. With the result, the United States is now on top of Group A. While the Yanks are level with Brazil on four points, the United States holds a large lead in the goal-differential tiebreaker of +8. The U.S. will conclude Group A play Monday against Morocco at 10:30 a.m.

If not for Brazilian goalkeeper Leilane and her six saves, the United States would have walked away with a comfortable win. The young Americans were clearly the better team for a large portion of the match, stringing together quick sequences of passes all over the field and creating dangerous chances. The Americans fired 19 shots to Brazil’s 14, but many of Brazil’s attempts came from distance. The United States also struggled to make the most of its set pieces and none of the team’s seven corner kicks found a way into the back of the net.

2023 Concacaf Champions League

The 2023 Concacaf Champions League will begin next March with Round of 16 games. Orlando City is already one of the team’s guaranteed a spot in the competition. The last slot to be claimed will be determined on Nov. 5 after MLS Cup is held. If the 2022 MLS Cup champion is a Canadian club or a club that has already qualified for the 2023 Concacaf Champions League, then the slot will be awarded to Austin FC as the highest-ranked U.S.-based club not already qualified according to the 2022 MLS Supporters Shield standings.

The 16-team tournament features two-legged matchups at each stage. The tournament is set to conclude with the final’s second leg on June 4. The overall winner will represent Concacaf at the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup. The first legs of the Round of 16 will be played March 7-9, followed by the second legs March 14-16. The quarterfinals will then resume April 4-6 and have their second legs completed within April 11-13. For the semifinals, matches will be played April 25-27 and second legs May 2-4. The culmination of the tournament and finals matches will be played on May 31 and June 4.

Hello, Mane Landers! I hope all is well with you down in Florida. I’ve been staying busy at work over the weekend. Let’s wish a happy belated birthday to Orlando Pride defender Cori Dyke, who turned 26 on Sunday, and a happy birthday to Orlando City defender Bernardo Rhein, who turns 19 today. We’ve got plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.

Lions Concede Two Late Goals in Loss at New England

Orlando City fell 4-2 to the New England Revolution on the road on Saturday at Gillette Stadium, conceding twice in stoppage time to drop a point. After trailing 2-0, the Lions came back with second-half goals from Ivan Angulo and Martin Ojeda, with the latter from the penalty spot just before the 90 minutes were up. However, in stoppage time, the Lions imploded, with Peyton Miller and Carles Gil closing out the night with two goals each for the Revolution. The loss snapped Orlando’s five-game unbeaten streak in league play, and the Lions left Foxborough with no points instead of at least one. Orlando City will be back on the road for its next match on Saturday against the Philadelphia Union.

Lions Unveil Vinicius Nogueira

Orlando City unveiled left back Vinicius Nogueira on Friday with a photo shoot at Inter.co Stadium.

The Lions signed Nogueira on Aug. 27 on loan from Bulgarian First League side PFC Ludogorets through the end of the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, with an option to make the move permanent. The 24-year-old Brazilian was on the bench during Orlando City’s match against the New England Revolution on Saturday but did not play.

Pride Fall at home to Portland Thorns

The Orlando Pride lost 4-1 to the Portland Thorns on Saturday at Inter.co Stadium, and while the team is still mathematically alive for the postseason, the home defeat made things even more of a longshot than they were. The Pride started slowly and were down 2-0 before Ally Lemos pulled one back in the first half. Orlando missed several scoring chances, and in the second half, Portland scored two goals to put the match away. Orlando will travel to the West Coast to take on Bay FC on Sunday.

OCB Falls to Atlanta United 2 on Decision Day

Orlando City B lost 4-2 to Atlanta United 2 on Decision Day Sunday at Osceola County Stadium, falling all the way to 10th and out of the playoff places. Atlanta struck first early before Issah Haruna tied it up for the Young Lions. However, Atlanta got an own goal when Tristan Himes punched a set piece deliver in off Harvey Sarajian to retake the lead, and Ignacio Saurez-Couri added another to make it 3-1. Justin Hylton scored for OCB to cut the deficit to one before halftime. In the second half, Dominik Chong-Qui scored the final goal to secure Atlanta’s win. For the Young Lions, the season ends in disappointment again, missing the MLS NEXT Pro postseason for the second straight season.

Justin Ellis named to USMNT roster for the first time, Orlando City players called up, MLS club profiles unveiled, and more.

Happy Friday, Mane Landers! There’s plenty of soccer to look forward to this weekend, with both the Orlando Pride and Orlando City in action on Saturday before Orlando City B finishes its regular season on Sunday. Hopefully, we’ll have plenty to celebrate over the next few days. But for now, let’s jump right into today’s links from around the soccer world!

Justin Ellis Named to First USMNT Roster

United States Men’s National Team Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino called up 28 players for training camp ahead of the team’s first friendlies since the World Cup. Orlando City forward Justin Ellis has had a breakout season at just 19 years old and is one of 13 uncapped players to earn a spot on the roster. Cavan Sullivan, Zavier Gozo, and Julian Hall are a few of the other young talents to keep an eye out for during these matches. Former Lion Alex Freeman, who scored for the U.S. at the World Cup, was called up as well. The U.S. will take on Peru on Sept. 26 at Inter.co Stadium, so hopefully fans will be able to see some familiar faces. Following that match, the Yanks will play against Chile on Sept. 29 in St. Louis before friendlies against Mexico on Oct. 3 and Canada on Oct. 6.

Lions Called Up For International Duty

Ellis isn’t the only Lion who will be with their national team over the next couple of weeks. Midfielder Wilder Cartagena was called up for Peru’s friendlies, along with former Lions Pedro Gallese and Yoshimar Yotun.

Tyrese Spicer was called up for Trinidad & Tobago’s upcoming Concacaf Nations League matches with spots in the quarterfinals up for grabs. Trinidad & Tobago will play against Haiti and the Dominican Republic before a pair of matches against Curacao.

Defender David Brekalo was also called up for Nations League games and will head to Europe for Slovenia’s matches in League B against Scotland, Switzerland, and North Macedonia.

Orlando City’s Club Profile Revealed

MLS released the club roster profiles for each team as of Sept. 15. These profiles have been a great way to see how each team’s roster is constructed, while also showing the contract and option details for each player. The Lions have all Designated Player and MLS U22 Initiative slots filled, with Eduard Atuesta, David Brekalo, and Braian Ojeda listed as TAM players. The profile also reveals that Orlando has $1.86 million in 2026 General Allocation Money remaining, and it’s hard not to wonder about the improvements that could have been made to the team with that money.

Vlatko Andonovski Joins the Chicago Stars

The Chicago Stars have hired Vlatko Andonovski as the club’s chief soccer officer to right the ship after another rough season. Already eliminated from playoff contention, the Stars have only won five games so far this season and fired Martin Sjögren as head coach last month. Andonovski joins the Stars after terminating his contract with the Kansas City Current on Sept. 7. The former United States Women’s National Team head coach has had plenty of success in women’s soccer and it’ll be interesting to see if he can turn things around in Chicago.

  • The Orlando Pride remained in 11th in CBS Sports’s NWSL power rankings following their 2-2 draw on the road against the Kansas City Current.
  • The San Diego Wave signed 18-year-old attacker Melanie Barcenas to a contract extension through the 2028 season. She’s been enjoying a breakout season in San Diego, scoring six goals so far this season.
  • Despite being called up to the USMNT, Julian Hall stated that he remains open to playing for Poland, which is where his mother is from.
  • From the heavyweight match between Roma and Inter in Serie A to the derby match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, here are the matchups to watch for in Europe this weekend.

That’s all I have for you this time around. I hope you all have a fantastic Friday and rest of your weekend!

Lions lose in Ohio, Pride part ways with Gabi Nunes, Barbra Banda’s league lessons, and more.

Well, Wednesday night could have gone better. It’s disappointing that we won’t be able to see the U.S. Open Cup final in Orlando, but there’s still plenty of soccer left to play this year for us to get excited about. Before we dive into Orlando City’s game and the rest of today’s links, let’s all wish a happy birthday to Orlando Pride defender Kerry Abello!

Orlando City Falls in Columbus

The Lions were eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup after losing 2-1 on the road to the Columbus Crew in the semifinals. Orlando City nemesis Josef Martinez gave the Crew an early lead, but the Lions managed to level things before halftime through Martin Ojeda. Unfortunately, Antoine Griezmann had to exit the match and the Lions were subpar without him, conceding another goal and failing to muster a single shot on target, let alone find another equalizer. All attention now turns towards securing a spot in the playoffs with nine games left in the regular season.

Orlando Pride, Gabi Nunes Agree to Part Ways

The Orlando Pride announced Wednesday that the club and forward Gabi Nunes have mutually agreed to terminate her contract. The 29-year-old had only just signed with the Pride on Aug. 4 on a contract through the 2026 season, but she managed just two appearances for 16 total minutes while in Orlando. Nunes joined the club after stints in Europe with Aston Villa, Levante UD, and Madrid CFF.

Barbra Banda Details Her Time in the NWSL

Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda signed a new contract with the club through the 2029 season and she spoke on how she’s grown as a player since joining the league in 2024.

“Honestly, I’ve learned a lot from this league. I would say it’s one of the best leagues in the world because the teams are so competitive, and you never go into a game relaxed,” Banda said. “You need to up your game each and every time. You need to be mentally fit, physically fit. It’s a battle you need to win, and you have to be smart at the end of the day. I feel I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve improved myself in so many ways. And, not forgetting my teammates, who have helped me to improve, and the technical staff as well. I can feel it myself, this level, it’s different.”

Banda has been phenomenal for the Pride, scoring 41 goals in 62 appearances across all competitions and helping the club win the double in her first year in the league. She’s been one of the best strikers in the league’s history, and it’s great to see her sticking around in the City Beautiful.

U.S. Eliminated From U-20 Women’s World Cup

The United States U-20 Women’s National Team drew 1-1 against Brazil but lost in the ensuing penalty shootout in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup’s round of 16. Brazil took the lead in the 59th minute off of a corner kick, but the U.S. equalized in the 63rd minute, thanks to a strike from Seattle Reign midfielder Ainsley McCammon. The Yanks made four of their attempts in the shootout, but Brazil ultimately prevailed by making all five. It’s a tough way to exit the tournament for the U.S., which was matched up against Brazil in the knockout stage after finishing third in its group.
