It’s our first show of 2023 and Orlando City has convened for preseason training to prepare for the MLS season ahead. There have been new arrivals and departures since our last show and we’re talking about the new guys and bidding a sad farewell to a fan favorite in Benji Michel. The Lions haven’t quite finished building the roster (or, at least, we hope that’s the case), with a couple of holes still left to address, but the team looks promising on paper as newcomers Rafael Santos and Martin Ojeda join the cause.
We also discussed Michel’s destination and a major award for an Orlando City draft pick. In addition, we touch on some news involving a few former Lions — one who suffered a major injury, one who hung up his boots, and another who has left his 2022 club.
The Orlando Pride did not win the Debinha sweepstakes as we’d hoped and traded out of a high draft spot to acquire even more Allocation Money. We’re not sure what the plan is for this club, as there has been a dearth of signings and there’s still no GM in place, but we sincerely hope there is one. A major part of that plan should take place on Thursday night as the NWSL Draft takes place, allowing the Pride to add some young talent. Will there be a late surprise involving some of that cash and some picks, or will the team just stockpile youth and see who emerges from the pack? We’ll have to wait to find out, but you won’t have to wait to listen to us rant about it.
We’d dearly love to see Seb Hines succeed but the off-season hasn’t exactly been one that fills us with confidence about him getting the right pieces in place to do so — at least not in his first year with the full-time job. We’ll just have to see how it all shakes out.
Finally, we spent some time answering your questions from our mailbag, where we were asked about an MLS SuperDraft player, how we got into both soccer in general and Orlando City specifically, and a brutal hypothetical that made us choose between two things we love. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC.
Stay safe and enjoy the show!
Here’s how No. 321 went down:
0:15 – Orlando City’s off-season moves continued with some key additions and one significant subtraction since our last show. We talked about those, as well as the areas that we feel should still be addressed before the season.
36:17 – No new moves by the Pride this week and that’s a major part of the problem, especially when it comes to missing out on a particularly talented Brazilian. What are the Pride doing? We can’t wait to find out!
1:03:10 – Mailbagbox time!

PawedCast Episode 528: Houston Rewind, USOC, OCB-Carolina Core, Charlotte Preview, and More
The Lions barely advanced in USOC but continue to disappoint even as the defense improves, and Charlotte visits Wednesday.
We are less than enthused about talking about Orlando City’s games this season, but that’s only because they continue to not win games. And even though the team did win one since our last show — a 1-0 nailbiter against USL League One side FC Naples in the U.S. Open Cup — it’s not always enjoyable to watch.
We open this episode with a breakdown of Orlando City’s 1-0 home loss to the Houston Dynamo. The Lions were wasteful with the few chances they created and although the defense has improved since Robin Jansson’s return, the offense has fallen off a cliff. There were even more injuries to deal with, literally adding injury to insult. We discuss the key plays and moments of the match, look back at last week’s score predictions, and make our selections for Man of the Match.
We also spent a few minutes discussing the 1-0 win at FC Naples that could have been different with better camera angles and video review, but it was a win, and those are difficult to come by these days, regardless of the competition. The Man of the Match was obvious in that one.
Our mailbagbox was short and sweet, as our listeners wanted to know about 25-year-old U.S. strikers playing abroad, our favorite Disney theme parks, and more. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.
After the mailbagbox, we touched on OCB’s 2-2 draw against Carolina Core FC, in which the Young Lions threw away a late 2-0 lead and blew a big chance to retake the lead in stoppage time. In the end, OCB managed to take two points and only drop one by winning the penalty shootout.
Finally, we looked forward to Wednesday’s home game against Charlotte FC. Wednesday’s visitors are much better than Saturday’s, so Orlando City will have to be much better just to get the same result, which is not a result we liked. Can the Lions win? Maybe, but it just doesn’t seem like this team is putting it together quite yet. We break down the series history, provide our key matchups for the game, and make our score predictions.
We’ll be back later in the week to break down the Charlotte game and preview Saturday’s trip to play D.C. United.

Here’s how No. 528 went down:
0:15 – The Lions lost again. Orlando is not playing great soccer and it would be better if it was.
27:17 – Our mailbagbox is an oasis in the middle of talking about this 2026 Orlando City season.
37:39 – OCB dropped a point at home and we look ahead to the Charlotte game during the midweek.

PawedCast Episode 527: Crew Rewind, USOC and Houston Previews, OCB, and More
A look back at the Lions’ draw in Columbus, OCB’s loss at Chattanooga, and previews of the FC Naples and Houston games.
The Lions finished off their three-game road trip, and while the 1-1 draw against the Crew in Columbus wasn’t a rousing success, it was light years ahead of the 5-0 loss at Nahsville and the 6-0 loss at LAFC. Returning players made a big difference and scoring the first goal was helpful as well, allowing the Lions to stop some of the bleeding and earn their first road point.
We look back at the key players and moments in the match, check back on our score predictions, and make our selections for Man of the Match.
Our mailbagbox was loaded up with questions about Ricardo Moriera, Orlando City’s roster needs, a Freaky Friday-type life swap situation, and much more. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.
After the mailbagbox, we touched on OCB’s 3-1 loss at Chattanooga FC and looked ahead to the Young Lions’ matchup Sunday against Carolina Core.
Finally, we looked ahead to a pair of upcoming Orlando City games this week. The Lions will play USL League One opponent FC Naples on the road Wednesday to start their 2026 U.S. Open Cup run. We’re not going to pretend to know a lot about the club, but it is currently first in the table and it’s both a winnable and loseable game. The second match takes place Saturday at home, when the Houston Dynamo visit. We look back at the series history, check out how the two sides measure up in the league, discuss our key matchups for the game, and make our predictions for the final score.

Here’s how No. 527 went down:
0:15 – Robin Jansson’s return was noticeable and so was his departure from the match on Sunday in Columbus.
24:45 – Our mailbagbox is chock full this week. We’re up to the challenge.
56:08 – OCB happenings, the Lions head south to take on FC Naples in U.S. Open Cup play, and the Houston Dynamo visit on Saturday.

SkoPurp Soccer Episode 118: Angel City Rewind and the International Break is Here
The Pride enter the international break on a good run of form after beating Angel City at home.
Angel City FC entered Inter&Co Stadium without a loss on the 2026 season. The Los Angeles-based club left Inter&Co Stadium with one loss on the 2026 season. That’s mainly because Haley McCutcheon turned vulture just a few feet in front of the Angel City net. The veteran midfielder scored on two shots that traveled about a combined six feet, ending what could have otherwise been a frustrating night on a high note.
The Pride scored late, conceded later, and retook the lead even later than that on the way to a 2-1 home win over former Orlando defender Emily Sams’ new team in a match that saw two would-be Pride goals not count. The first was offside and the second was for a push, but the other two counted despite nervy reviews.
We look back at a solid performance against a good Angel City side, checked our score predictions (one of us nailed it), and made our picks for Player of the Match. Several players performed well, but it was an easy pick in the end.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t all good for the Pride, as both Jacquie Ovalle and Oihane left the match with injuries.
Our mailbagbox had questions about starters on the back line, memes, NWSL referees, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. You can use that same hashtag and hit @TheManeLand.bsky.social up on Bluesky. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We’d also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we’ll find them easily and read them on the show.
With the international break upon us, we touched on the USWNT’s upcoming matches against Japan briefly before wrapping up the show.

Here’s how Episode 118 went down:
0:15 – Angel City’s perfect record is over, thanks to Haley McCutcheon and the Pride.
18:16 – The Mailbagbox brings some snark this week as the listeners weren’t fans of the officiating Friday.
37:42 – The international break is here, so it’ll be a minute before the Pride resume the regular season at Racing Louisville.
