Lions in international action, USMNT defeats Ghana, Daryl Dike could return to play for West Brom in January, and more.
Hello, Mane Landers. I hope all is well with you down in Florida. I’ve been busy working at Under Armour while covering high school sports, but I try to catch some soccer whenever I can. There is plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.
Lions in Action During International Break
Orlando City players Facundo Torres, Pedro Gallese, Wilder Cartagena, Duncan McGuire, and Wilfredo Rivera were all away with their respective teams during the international break. McGuire began the night on the bench with the U-23 United States National Team, but came on in the second half and scored the final goal in a 4-1 win over Japan.
Torres didn’t play for Uruguay on Tuesday, but his side shut out Brazil 2-0 in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying. Gallese and Cartagena both started in Peru’s 2-0 loss to Argentina. Forward Wilfredo Rivera and Orlando City B’s Ian Silva were both in action for Puerto Rico, but ended up losing 3-1 to Guyana for the second time in a week in Concacaf Nations League B action.
USMNT Defeats Ghana in Friendly
The United States Men’s National Team cruised to a 4-0 win over Ghana in a friendly in Nashville. USMNT Head Coach Gregg Berhalter made a few changes to the lineup that lost 3-1 to Germany this past weekend. All four of the USMNT’s goals came in the first half, as the Yanks set the tone early on and didn’t give Ghana a way back into the match. The attackers who came on after halftime weren’t able to replicate the first-half success, but the defense ultimately did its part to secure the shutout. The USMNT will be back in action in November for the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals.
Former Lion Daryl Dike May Return for West Brom in January
Former Orlando City forward Daryl Dike has been out of the lineup for EFL Championship side West Brom after he suffered an Achilles injury towards the end of last season. The injury also forced Dike to miss potential call-ups to the USMNT in this past summer’s tournaments, such as the Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup. Dike had been in good form, scoring six goals for West Brom prior to the injury back in April. West Brom currently sits in 11th place in the EFL Championship with 16 points, but are just two points away from the top six. West Brom’s manager, Carlos Corberan, has stated that he expects Dike to provide a boost to the club once he’s back fit again for the second half of the season and could return to action in January
Euro 2024 Qualifying Roundup
The Euro 2024 qualifying matches continued on Tuesday with some intriguing results. The marquee matchup was in Group C as England defeated Italy 3-1 and clinched a spot in next year’s tournament. Ukraine was trailing 1-0 to Malta, but rallied back to win 3-1 and move to second in the group. Italy and Ukraine will face each other next month. Elsewhere, Lithuania and Hungary finished in a 2-2 draw as Hungary missed out on a chance to punch its ticket to the tournament, and Serbia defeated Montenegro 3-1 in Group G action. Finally, in Group H, Kazakhstan beat Finland 2-1, while Slovenia edged out Northern Ireland 1-0 and Denmark beat San Marino 2-1. It’s a close race in this group for qualifying for Euro 2024, with Slovenia and Denmark tied at 19 points while Kazakhstan is on the outside looking in with 15.

Predictions for the 2026 MLS season, UEFA Champions League returns, transfer rumor roundup, and more.
It feels a little strange to be saying this after what feels like a couple minutes since the end of last season, but happy match week everyone! The Lions are set to take on the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, and hopefully the final preseason match was simply Orlando City’s time to get out all of the mistakes when the games don’t matter. We’ve got plenty to discuss this morning, so let’s get into the links.
MLS Preseason Predictions
With the 2026 MLS season due to get underway this weekend, now is a good time to make predictions on how the various teams will fare this year. When it comes to Orlando City, a lot of the on-air talent at Apple TV who cover the league don’t seem particularly positive about the Lions’ chances. The general consensus has the Lions finishing the year at ninth in the Eastern Conference, although a couple individuals have them sinking as low as 12th, and Max Bretos has the good guys as high as third. Inter Miami and LAFC are the picks to win their respective conferences, while CF Montreal and Sporting Kansas City occupy the cellar spots.
UEFA Champions League Preview
The UEFA Champions League is back this week as the play-off round kicks off later today. The Tuesday slate of games is highlighted by Benfica hosting Real Madrid in a rematch of the dramatic game on matchday eight that saw the Portuguese outfit sneak into the knockout round with a last-minute goal. The match between Weston McKennie’s Juventus team and Galatasaray should also be a great spectacle, and the Istanbul outfit’s intimidating atmosphere could make the difference against the Italian side. Wednesday sees Bodo/Glimt host Inter Milan in its frozen home above the Arctic Circle, while Club Brugge will try to use its own home-field advantage to grab a result against Atletico Madrid.
Transfer Rumor Roundup
The winter transfer window might be over for European teams, but that isn’t stopping the transfer rumors from continuing to fly. We start with Manchester United, as the Red Devils are reportedly eyeing up a move to sign Alexis Mac Allister from Liverpool this summer to help solve some of their midfield struggles. Meanwhile, Brighton and Hove Albion is said to have made another offer to sign promising young winger Said El Lama from FC Koln, despite the German team’s reluctance to sell him. Elsewhere in England, Chelsea and Tottenham are both reportedly interested in signing Bayern Munich center back Kim Min-Jae. Finally, Tom Bogert says St. Louis City is close to signing forward Sergio Cordova on loan from BSC Young Boys.
FA Cup Fifth Round Draw
The draw has been completed for the fifth round of the FA Cup, and it’s thrown up some intriguing matchups. The one that’s grabbed a lot of the headlines is Wrexham hosting Chelsea at the Racecourse Ground after making it to the round of 16 for the first time in 29 years. Newcastle United will host Manchester City in another big clash, while West Ham United will take on a Brentford side that was given a real scare by National League side Macclesfield Town on Monday in a 1-0 win that took an own goal to send the Bees through. League One side Mansfield Town has been given a tortuously tough test in Arsenal, but the lower division outfit does have the benefit of playing the match at home.

Lions fall to Rapids in final preseason match, Pride release preseason schedule, MLS transfer news, and more.
Hello, Mane Landers, and happy President’s Day! I hope all is well with you down in Florida over the holiday weekend. I’ve been busy covering high school playoff basketball and hockey over the past week. Orlando City’s home opener is Saturday, and like many of you, I look forward to seeing what the Lions can do during the 2026 MLS season. We’ve got plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.
Lions Fall to Rapids in Final Preseason Match
In its final preseason match, Orlando City fell 4-1 to the Colorado Rapids Saturday at Inter&Co Stadium. The Rapids quickly responded with a goal from Darren Yapi extend their lead to 3-1. Lucas Herrington scored the final goal of the night for Colorado to seal the victory on the road. The Pride’s upcoming preseason matches are Friday against Racing Louisville, Sunday against the University of Florida, and March 1 against NJ/NY Gotham FC.
Orlando Pride Announce Preseason Fan Events
The Orlando Pride unveiled the list of events ahead of the 2026 season Saturday. The first event is Tuesday with Pour Overs With Pride at Qreate Coffee Creative Village, where fans can interact with Simone Jackson and Nicole Payne as baristas. The Pride will reveal their new secondary jersey at The Final Whistle at Thornton Park Pub on Feb. 26. The Pints with Pride event is March 3 with Summer Yates and Cori Dyke as bartenders, and the club’s annual Scarf the City event is March 10.

Hannah Anderson challenging herself in Orlando, Luana called up by Brazil, broadcasting changes ahead of MLS season, and more.
Today is Friday the 13th, so make sure to steer clear of black cats, ladders, and any other bad omens out there. Orlando City’s season opener is next weekend and the last thing we need to do is accumulate bad luck before the Lions take the field. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and dive into today’s links!
Hannah Anderson Prepares for First Season in Orlando
Defender Hannah Anderson was drafted by the Chicago Stars in the third round of the 2024 NWSL Draft and spent two seasons there before the Pride traded for her in January for $70,000 in intraleague funds. Chicago conceded twice as many goals as Orlando last season, and now Anderson is challenging herself with an opportunity to improve as a defender with the Pride.
“I don’t really look at it as pressure, I think it’s an opportunity,” she said. “The challenge is what’s going to help me grow. When you’re never challenged, you can’t grow. It’s kind of like how you see that challenge. Yeah, it could be pressure, but I also think it’s exciting to be a part of a group that’s been there, because the experience will help you get there again.”
The 24-year-old also spoke on what it’s like to go up against Orlando’s attacking stars in training, as well as her decision to join the Pride while engaged to Chicago Cubs pitcher Jack Neely. With Emily Sams on the other side of the country, hopefully Anderson can have a breakout year to help fill the void.
Luana Returns to Brazil National Team
Orlando Pride midfielder Luana was called up for Brazil’s friendlies against Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Mexico in a few weeks. It’s great to see her back with the national team after all she’s been through and Head Coach Arthur Elias spoke on her return.
“Calling up Luana is a joy, but the greater joy was when she overcame cancer, a disease diagnosed during a period with the National Team. It was a huge shock for all of us. Luana has an incredible history in football, she is a woman of great strength, who showed this and set many examples for those around her,” he celebrated.
She will bring some experience to a Brazil roster that doesn’t include any other Pride players, although former Pride player Adriana was called up. Brazil has already secured qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup as its host, so the focus will be on playing quality opponents until then.
Getting Ready for More MLS on Apple TV
We’re gearing up for the fourth MLS season streamed through Apple TV and the biggest difference this time around is that MLS Season Pass is a thing of the past. It’s a major boon for fans, as all games will be through an Apple TV subscription rather than a separate platform at an additional cost. For those of us who like to watch MLS games at our favorite bar, an agreement with EverPass Media should increase the reach of the league in commercial venues. Saturday night matches with increased production value, announcers returning to the actual stadiums to call games, and the removal of the Spanish version of MLS 360 are some of the other notable changes heading into this season.
Nottingham Forest Fires Manager…Again
Just a day after Thomas Franks was fired by Tottenham, Nottingham Forest sacked Sean Dyche following the club’s scoreless draw with Wolverhampton this week. Dyche joined the club in October and was just nominated for Manager of the Month for his team’s results in January. However, Forest is just three points above the relegation zone and has now fired its third coach of the season. Vitor Pereira will reportedly replace Dyche as the club’s fourth coach of the season, which would be a league record. ESPN dove into how English Premier League teams that made multiple firings in the same season performed and it’s grim news for Forest.

- Orlando City goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau went under the microscope to field a variety of questions. I’m pretty interested in why Duncan McGuire would be the first person he’d call if he found a dead body in his hotel room.
- Construction is underway at Camping World Stadium as it begins its $400 million renovation to expand seating and improve the facilities.
- Atletico Madrid put Barcelona to the sword in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal, winning 4-0 thanks to four goals in the first half.
- Raheem Sterling has joined Feyenoord as a free agent after a mutual agreement with Chelsea to terminate his contract last season.
- The draw for the UEFA Nations League was completed and Spain was drawn into a group with England, Croatia, and the Czech Republic.
That’s all I have for you on this fine Friday. I hope you all have a lucky day and that all of your Valentine’s Day plans this weekend go off without a hitch!
