I just want to start with, I don't care if you're reading this right now as long as you and everyone you care about is safe. Not your typical writer's response, and kind of moot considering anyone who doesn't read this, well, won't read this statement. But know that all of us at The Mane Land are rooting for everyone to make it through this time as best as we can.

So stay safe, drink plenty of fluids (the hard kind), and as long as you've got power, thank you for checking in with us as we hope to give you the distraction you probably need.

New Faces the Theme at D.C. United

Tonight, Orlando City takes on D.C. United at RFK Stadium (7 p.m. ET, TV27) in a battle for good vibes with both teams firmly out of the playoff picture. But that doesn't mean you should be ignoring it. New faces to Orlando and D.C. look to rule the day as both teams are a far cry from the 2-0 Orlando win back in May.

A heavy transfer window for D.C. United saw USMNT player Paul Arriola join fellow transfers Zoltan Steiber and Russell Canouse in leading United to a three-match winning streak. Meanwhile, Dom Dwyer looks to open his account, alongside Yoshi Yotùn in their first ever match in D.C. as members of the Lions.

Orlando has scored in five of their last six matches, while D.C. United has won its three consecutive matches by a count of 1-0 each time. Something has to give here and we're hopeful the Lions can bounce back with a season sweep.

For more details, here's our match preview

Irma May Wreak Havoc for Lions Travel ; Training gets "Chippy"

Irma is providing plenty of distractions for the Lions as players have been preparing for the unknown while in D.C. this weekend. Irma intends to play further havoc on the Lions’ travel schedule, as it is unlikely they'll be able to make it back into Orlando safely after the match. The next match is away to Atlanta, which could serve as an early destination to avoid weather issues.

Kreis is quoted as saying players are getting "chippy" in training and that's a good thing as far as he's concerned. Here's hoping that fire carries through to the pitch tonight vs. D.C. United.

Alex Morgan Gives Her Thoughts on Short-Lived Excitement, Playoffs Inch Closer

The Orlando Pride had a very short-lived clinched playoff — literally to the tune of a goal celebration —- as the Seattle Reign fired right back to keep the playoffs alive for them and Sky Blue Thursday night. Listen to Alex Morgan give her take on the goal, Seattle's response, and the run ahead as the Pride inch closer to their first playoff appearance:

This leaves the Orlando Pride in the third playoff spot for now with one more match played than Chicago and Sky Blue with two tough matches ahead against the Portland Thorns at home and at the North Carolina Courage — the top two teams in the NWSL. The good news is with two games to play the Pride only need to take a couple more points from these final matches to clinch or have Sky Blue and Seattle drop points elsewhere. Seattle and Sky Blue must win out to even have a chance at taking a spot from Orlando. So, while it's looking good for the Pride there still remains some work to close out the season.

Edwards Earns USL Player of the Month

Earl Edwards Jr.'s importance to Orlando City B has been recognized this month by USL, as he earns Player of the Month for August, despite missing two-fifths of OCB's matches upon an MLS call-up.

Edwards featured three shutouts in five appearances with an 88.5% save percentage and helped the young Lions climb as high as sixth in the USL’s Eastern Conference.

Check back on Monday for an in-depth look at Edwards current situation.

Could Orlando City Stadium Host the U.S. leg of a WCQ Playoff?

The chances of the U.S. Men's National Team featuring in a World Cup qualifying playoff hasn't been this real for awhile. But the fact is that the USA has a lot of work to do and their latest two results haven't inspired confidence that clinching that third spot is automatic by any stretch.

With a playoff on the table, the USSF needs to start strategizing now on what the best options would be for the U.S. leg. Considering the scrutiny they've faced for the Costa Rica match in New Jersey, they would be wise to give considerable consideration to the best stadium for home advantage vs. revenues and TV markets. Orlando City Stadium features in this FourFourTwo article on potential venues.

And lastly, I leave with you with this: we all make mistakes. Sometimes you close down one the best roller coasters in Central Florida despite a certain writer waiting two hours to get his last ride ever because it's that good (not a mistake, I'll miss you Dueling Dragons!). And sometimes you misspell the name of your club on your badge, forcing you and your brand to refund thousands of sold kits.

Stay safe Florida!

Joran Gerbet earns recognition, Pierre Da Silva’s new club, Gaston Gimenez leaves the Chicago Fire, and more.

How’s it going, Mane Landers? I hope all who celebrate it had a nice Christmas without any major incidents and plenty of fun with friends and family. If you’re celebrating other holidays, hopefully your Hannukah is off to a great start or you’ve been waiting for Kwanzaa, it’s finally here, so enjoy! There’s officially less than a week left in the year, and I, for one, can’t wait to bid farewell to 2024. Let’s dive into today’s links from around the soccer world!

Orlando City’s Joran Gerbet Included Among Top College Players

Top Drawer Soccer handed out accolades following the college soccer season and Orlando City draft pick Joran Gerbet was named to its Best XI second team. The Lions selected him in the first round of the draft and it’s nice to see him earn some recognition after a solid senior season with Clemson. Gerbet also ranked 17th in Top Drawer Soccer‘s top 100 players from the past season. Denver midfielder Sam Bassett, who was not eligible for the MLS SuperDraft, claimed the top spot and was named Player of the Year as well. Freshman of the Year went to Ransford Gyan, who was Gerbet’s teammate in Clemson’s midfield.

Pierre Da Silva Signs With Cusco FC

Former Lion Pierre Da Silva is plying his trade in Peru these days and has signed with Cusco FC in the country’s top flight. Da Silva, who was primarily an OCB player but made three first-team appearances, hasn’t been with Orlando City since 2019, when he and the club agreed to part ways that summer. The winger then went on to join Memphis 901, Miami FC, and Forward Madison before heading to Peru to join Universidad César Vallejo this year. His club was relegated, but he will remain in Liga 1 with a Cusco team that qualified for the Copa Sudamericana. It’s always nice to get an update on what a former Lion is up to these days, and hopefully his second year in Peru goes better than his first.

Chicago Fire Terminate Gaston Gimenez’s Contract

Midfielder Gaston Gimenez is no longer with the Chicago Fire after he and the club mutually agreed to terminate his contract. Gimenez has been with the Fire since joining the club in 2020, and this move opens up a Designated Player spot for the Fire as well. It will be a needed fresh start of sorts for the Fire, as they hired Gregg Berhalter as head coach this off-season. The Fire finished at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and only scored 40 goals in 2024, so being able to add some firepower is useful for Chicago to prepare for 2025.

Diving Into Club Color Origins

If you’ve ever wanted to know the soccer equivalent to “How the Leopard Got Its Spots,” ESPN provided a cool guide that explores the origins behind club colors from around the world. It’s filled with fun tidbits ranging from theories on why Corinthians swapped from beige to white to how Juventus was set to wear red jerseys with white trim, but a wrong order delivered the iconic black-and-white stripes instead. The interactive article lets you check out jerseys from each club over the years to see how they evolved. Maybe it’s the latent Christmas consumerism still in my veins, but I would love a coffee table book of this kind of content.

  • Valencia has hired Carlos Corberan from West Brom as its next head coach after firing Ruben Baraja earlier this week. The Spanish club is fighting to avoid relegation in La Liga with only 12 points from 17 matches this season.
  • Sporting CP has reportedly fired Joao Pereira, with Rui Borges set to become the next head coach.
  • We have plenty of Boxing Day action to enjoy today, but a few players spoke on the difficulties of training on Christmas or traveling with their teams rather than spending the holiday with their families.
  • Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou bemoaned how the expanded UEFA Champions League is complicating the transfer window as he aims to bring in reinforcements.
  • Oscar, who has spent the past eight seasons with Shanghai Port, is returning to Sao Paulo on a three-year contract. The 33-year-old started his professional career with Sao Paulo in 2008.

That’s all I have for you this time around. I hope you all have a wonderful Thursday and rest of your week!

Orlando Pride make everyone’s ‘nice’ list, the USMNT’s new attitude, Boxing Day matches, and more.

Merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah, Mane Landers! One of the great things about soccer is that unlike other sports, there are matches being played somewhere nearly every day of the year. It truly is something for which I’m grateful. That also means there’s soccer news even on a big holiday, making my job here a bit easier. As such, let’s get to the links.

Orlando Pride Still Tops

It doesn’t matter what list you mention when it comes to women’s soccer, the Orlando Pride will be on it. If you follow women’s soccer — and I don’t know why you wouldn’t — 2024 brought plenty of gifts. Obviously, Marta lifting a pair of trophies was big news in the world of women’s soccer. The arrival of Barbra Banda and Temwa Chawinga to the NWSL was also pretty significant. Enjoy all of this as long as you can. I know I will.

USMNT Savageness

Weston McKennie is loving the attitude that Mauricio Pochettino is bringing to the USMNT. Some have felt that the U.S. has played too timidly before his arrival. Now, McKennie feels he’s bringing a savageness and a bit of South American attitude to the team. Previously, the USMNT was known for being physical if not technical. Perhaps McKennie and his generation can bring both to the table.

Premier League Holiday Cheer

Thursday is a big matchday in the English Premier League. If you’re lucky enough to not have to go to work, there will be plenty of Boxing Day matches to enjoy. Liverpool is top of the table this Christmas, in large part to the efforts of Mo Salah, who became the first player in Premier League history to reach double figures for goals and assists before Christmas.

Given it’s the holiday season, I’m certain that all the EPL clubs want something in their stockings. Of course, if you’re not adding pieces you might fall behind. There are players that each club could add to help in the pursuit of glory.

Rioters Sentenced

Five of the 60 people detained after riots outside the UEFA Europa League match between the Dutch side Ajax and Israel’s Maccabi Tel-Aviv in November have been sentenced by an Amsterdam District Court. The perpetrators’ punishment ran from community service to six months in prison. The altercation took place between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli football fans. Five people were sent to the hospital and 20 others sustained minor injuries. I truly wish this type of thing would stop at soccer matches — or anywhere for that matter.

That will do it for today. If you celebrate Christmas, I hope you had a wonderful time giving and receiving gifts this morning. If Hanukkah is your thing, enjoy all eight days and nights. Kwanzaa? Enjoy every day from Thursday through Jan. 1. Festivus celebrators, you should already have done your feats of strength and airing of grievances. If you don’t celebrate any particular holidays, I hope you had a peaceful, relaxing morning. Just know that we here at The Mane Land are grateful for the gift of your readership.

MLS transfer roundup, Americans in midweek action, NWSL news galore, and more.

Dan MacDonald, The Mane Land

Happy Tuesday and merry Christmas Eve, everyone! I hope you’re all having a good start to your week and have some fun stuff planned for the upcoming holidays.

Before we get started with today’s links, we here at The Mane Land want to give a special shout out to Joe (a.k.a. fldatadude) for signing up for a Homegrown Player-level membership on our Buy Me a Coffee page. By signing up at one of our three levels of support, our readers and podcast listeners can enjoy added benefits in addition to keeping our bills paid so we can continue doing what we do.

Now we do have plenty of items to get to today, so let’s get into today’s news.

MLS Transfer News Roundup

Several MLS teams have been busy at work in the transfer market, so let’s break down the recent moves. LAFC signed free agent forward Jeremy Ebobisse to a three-year deal with an additional option year, adding more firepower to an already strong squad. The Portland Timbers also got some business done via free agency, as they signed winger Ariel Lassiter. FC Dallas acquired forward Anderson Julio from Real Salt Lake, with defender Sam Junqua and up to $500,000 in General Allocation Money going to RSL in exchange. Finally, Lorenzo Insigne has teased on his Instagram that he will play another season for Toronto FC in 2025.

Americans in Midweek Action

There are a number of Americans playing this week, so get everything marked down and enjoy some festive footy. Thursday’s Boxing Day slate features Americans heavily, with Chris Richards, Matt Turner, and Crystal Palace traveling to take on Tyler Adams and Bournemouth in Premier League play. Antonee Robinson and Fulham will play Chelsea that same day, while Brenden Aaronson and Leeds United face an unenviable trip to Stoke City to round things off on Thursday.

Keeping Up With NWSL Happenings

Let’s start our NWSL roundup with the San Diego Wave, which have reportedly hired Jonas Eidevall as their new head coach. The Swede most recently spent time coaching Arsenal and has reportedly been the Wave’s top choice for several weeks. We now move to the realm of fact, where Angel City FC has signed midfielder Macey Hodge to a two-year deal with an option for the 2027 season. Finally, expansion team BOS Nation FC agreed a lease with Boston Public Schools and the City of Boston that will allow the team to use White Stadium as its home ground starting in 2026.

European Transfer Rumor Mill

Europe’s club teams can’t do business quite yet, but rumors are flying thick and fast with January just around the corner. First up, Manchester United is said to be exploring a deal to sign Victor Osimhen in January, particularly with Marcus Rashford indicating that he wants out of the club. Staying in the Premier League, Christopher Nkunku’s agent has reportedly offered the forward’s services to Barcelona, as he hasn’t been starting for the Blues and wants a larger role. Finally, Bayern Munich is said to be closely monitoring Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, which would add him to a long list of Dortmund players snapped up by the Bundesliga giants.
