How’s it going, Mane Landers? I’m still not quite used to the fact that there won’t be any more games from Orlando City, the Orlando Pride, or Orlando City B this year. I don’t know what to do with my hands. Fortunately, there’s still plenty of soccer all over the world for us to sink our teeth into and the World Cup is just a month away. Let’s dive right into today’s links!

MLS Playoffs Resume Tonight

The top seeds in the MLS playoffs join the fray tonight in a pair of exciting conference semifinals. Of the two matches, I’m honestly more excited for the match between the Philadelphia Union and FC Cincinnati at 8 p.m. Cincinnati General Manager Chris Albright and Head Coach Pat Noonan both came to Ohio from the Union this past off-season. They helped turn the team around and now face their former club in Cincy’s biggest match since joining the league. The Union are one of the favorites to win it all, while Cincy is bringing plenty of energy and a potent offense into this match. It has the potential to be one of the best playoff games in recent memory.

That match will be followed by a postseason edition of El Trafico as the LA Galaxy make a short trip to take on LAFC at 10 p.m. A Supporters’ Shield winner hasn’t won the MLS Cup since 2017, but LAFC has a roster filled with enough talent to do it. There are big names on both teams and it will be interesting to see how LAFC utilizes Gareth Bale, who came to MLS partly because of these playoffs right before the World Cup. There are also some former Lions to keep an eye out for as LAFC’s Sebas Mendez and the Galaxy’s Sacha Kljestan could receive some minutes in the midfield.

Pair of Union Players Win MLS Awards

Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, becoming the first player to win the award three times. The 31-year-old’s 15 clean sheets were the most in MLS as he helped the Union only allow 26 goals in 34 games this season. Blake ran away with the vote, beating out Inter Miami’s Drake Callender and the New England Revolution’s Djordje Petrovic.

Of course, Blake wasn’t the only reason Philadelphia’s defense was so dominant this year. Center back Jakob Glesnes became the first Union player to win MLS Defender of the Year. The 28-year-old played every minute for the Union this season, recording 57 interceptions and three assists while only picking up two yellow cards. He won the award over teammate Kai Wagner and New York City FC’s Alexander Callens.

Americans Earn Important Minutes Abroad

The World Cup is only a month away and every game until then is crucial for the players who hope to be in Qatar come late November. American striker Ricardo Pepi is making the most of his move to the Netherlands, scoring his fifth goal for FC Groningen in a 3-0 win over FC Dordrecht. Christian Pulisic came off the bench and nearly scored in Chelsea’s scoreless draw against Brentford. He could take on a larger role as the World Cup nears and Chelsea manager Graham Potter had some praise for his performance. Elsewhere in England, Zack Steffen came up with four saves in Middlesbrough’s 4-1 win against Wigan Athletic. Giovanni Reyna, Malik Tillman, and Cameron Carter-Vickers were also in action to help their teams win tournament games.

Looking Ahead to the Women’s World Cup Draw

This Saturday, the United States Women’s National Team will learn which nations it will be grouped up with in next summer’s World Cup. An interesting wrinkle to this draw compared to those of the past is that it will determine which teams will be playing their group games in Australia and which will play in New Zealand. The USWNT is in Pot 1, meaning it can’t be drawn against the hosts or the other top teams: Sweden, Germany, England, France, and Spain. Three spots in the tournament are still unclaimed as of now, with a 10-team playoff set to take place in February. With an expanded field of 32 teams, each group will have four teams this time around.

  • Orlando center back Rodrigo Schlegel gave a nice boost to everyone’s spirits on Twitter.

  • After finishing last in the league, D.C. United parted ways with its general manager and head of technical recruitment and analysis, Lucy Rushton. First team performance director Victor Lonchuk is also no longer with the club.
  • In the Women’s Champions League, Arsenal went on the road and crushed Lyon 5-1 in a convincing victory. Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, and Juventus also picked up wins to start their campaigns.
  • A new USL Championship team is coming to Milwaukee, with an 8,000-seat stadium planned as well.
  • Manchester United came up with a big win at home by beating Tottenham 2-0. Cristiano Ronaldo was an unused substitute and left the match early, but it shouldn’t overshadow a strong performance from United.

That’s all I have for you today. I hope you all have a wonderful Thursday and rest of your week.

Hello, Mane Landers! I hope all is well with you down in Florida. I’ve been staying busy at work over the weekend. Let’s wish a happy belated birthday to Orlando Pride defender Cori Dyke, who turned 26 on Sunday, and a happy birthday to Orlando City defender Bernardo Rhein, who turns 19 today. We’ve got plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.

Lions Concede Two Late Goals in Loss at New England

Orlando City fell 4-2 to the New England Revolution on the road on Saturday at Gillette Stadium, conceding twice in stoppage time to drop a point. After trailing 2-0, the Lions came back with second-half goals from Ivan Angulo and Martin Ojeda, with the latter from the penalty spot just before the 90 minutes were up. However, in stoppage time, the Lions imploded, with Peyton Miller and Carles Gil closing out the night with two goals each for the Revolution. The loss snapped Orlando’s five-game unbeaten streak in league play, and the Lions left Foxborough with no points instead of at least one. Orlando City will be back on the road for its next match on Saturday against the Philadelphia Union.

Lions Unveil Vinicius Nogueira

Orlando City unveiled left back Vinicius Nogueira on Friday with a photo shoot at Inter.co Stadium.

The Lions signed Nogueira on Aug. 27 on loan from Bulgarian First League side PFC Ludogorets through the end of the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, with an option to make the move permanent. The 24-year-old Brazilian was on the bench during Orlando City’s match against the New England Revolution on Saturday but did not play.

Pride Fall at home to Portland Thorns

The Orlando Pride lost 4-1 to the Portland Thorns on Saturday at Inter.co Stadium, and while the team is still mathematically alive for the postseason, the home defeat made things even more of a longshot than they were. The Pride started slowly and were down 2-0 before Ally Lemos pulled one back in the first half. Orlando missed several scoring chances, and in the second half, Portland scored two goals to put the match away. Orlando will travel to the West Coast to take on Bay FC on Sunday.

OCB Falls to Atlanta United 2 on Decision Day

Orlando City B lost 4-2 to Atlanta United 2 on Decision Day Sunday at Osceola County Stadium, falling all the way to 10th and out of the playoff places. Atlanta struck first early before Issah Haruna tied it up for the Young Lions. However, Atlanta got an own goal when Tristan Himes punched a set piece deliver in off Harvey Sarajian to retake the lead, and Ignacio Saurez-Couri added another to make it 3-1. Justin Hylton scored for OCB to cut the deficit to one before halftime. In the second half, Dominik Chong-Qui scored the final goal to secure Atlanta’s win. For the Young Lions, the season ends in disappointment again, missing the MLS NEXT Pro postseason for the second straight season.

Happy Friday, Mane Landers! There’s plenty of soccer to look forward to this weekend, with both the Orlando Pride and Orlando City in action on Saturday before Orlando City B finishes its regular season on Sunday. Hopefully, we’ll have plenty to celebrate over the next few days. But for now, let’s jump right into today’s links from around the soccer world!

Justin Ellis Named to First USMNT Roster

United States Men’s National Team Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino called up 28 players for training camp ahead of the team’s first friendlies since the World Cup. Orlando City forward Justin Ellis has had a breakout season at just 19 years old and is one of 13 uncapped players to earn a spot on the roster. Cavan Sullivan, Zavier Gozo, and Julian Hall are a few of the other young talents to keep an eye out for during these matches. Former Lion Alex Freeman, who scored for the U.S. at the World Cup, was called up as well. The U.S. will take on Peru on Sept. 26 at Inter.co Stadium, so hopefully fans will be able to see some familiar faces. Following that match, the Yanks will play against Chile on Sept. 29 in St. Louis before friendlies against Mexico on Oct. 3 and Canada on Oct. 6.

Lions Called Up For International Duty

Ellis isn’t the only Lion who will be with their national team over the next couple of weeks. Midfielder Wilder Cartagena was called up for Peru’s friendlies, along with former Lions Pedro Gallese and Yoshimar Yotun.

Tyrese Spicer was called up for Trinidad & Tobago’s upcoming Concacaf Nations League matches with spots in the quarterfinals up for grabs. Trinidad & Tobago will play against Haiti and the Dominican Republic before a pair of matches against Curacao.

Defender David Brekalo was also called up for Nations League games and will head to Europe for Slovenia’s matches in League B against Scotland, Switzerland, and North Macedonia.

Orlando City’s Club Profile Revealed

MLS released the club roster profiles for each team as of Sept. 15. These profiles have been a great way to see how each team’s roster is constructed, while also showing the contract and option details for each player. The Lions have all Designated Player and MLS U22 Initiative slots filled, with Eduard Atuesta, David Brekalo, and Braian Ojeda listed as TAM players. The profile also reveals that Orlando has $1.86 million in 2026 General Allocation Money remaining, and it’s hard not to wonder about the improvements that could have been made to the team with that money.

Vlatko Andonovski Joins the Chicago Stars

The Chicago Stars have hired Vlatko Andonovski as the club’s chief soccer officer to right the ship after another rough season. Already eliminated from playoff contention, the Stars have only won five games so far this season and fired Martin Sjögren as head coach last month. Andonovski joins the Stars after terminating his contract with the Kansas City Current on Sept. 7. The former United States Women’s National Team head coach has had plenty of success in women’s soccer and it’ll be interesting to see if he can turn things around in Chicago.

  • The Orlando Pride remained in 11th in CBS Sports’s NWSL power rankings following their 2-2 draw on the road against the Kansas City Current.
  • The San Diego Wave signed 18-year-old attacker Melanie Barcenas to a contract extension through the 2028 season. She’s been enjoying a breakout season in San Diego, scoring six goals so far this season.
  • Despite being called up to the USMNT, Julian Hall stated that he remains open to playing for Poland, which is where his mother is from.
  • From the heavyweight match between Roma and Inter in Serie A to the derby match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, here are the matchups to watch for in Europe this weekend.

That’s all I have for you this time around. I hope you all have a fantastic Friday and rest of your weekend!

Lions lose in Ohio, Pride part ways with Gabi Nunes, Barbra Banda’s league lessons, and more.

Well, Wednesday night could have gone better. It’s disappointing that we won’t be able to see the U.S. Open Cup final in Orlando, but there’s still plenty of soccer left to play this year for us to get excited about. Before we dive into Orlando City’s game and the rest of today’s links, let’s all wish a happy birthday to Orlando Pride defender Kerry Abello!

Orlando City Falls in Columbus

The Lions were eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup after losing 2-1 on the road to the Columbus Crew in the semifinals. Orlando City nemesis Josef Martinez gave the Crew an early lead, but the Lions managed to level things before halftime through Martin Ojeda. Unfortunately, Antoine Griezmann had to exit the match and the Lions were subpar without him, conceding another goal and failing to muster a single shot on target, let alone find another equalizer. All attention now turns towards securing a spot in the playoffs with nine games left in the regular season.

Orlando Pride, Gabi Nunes Agree to Part Ways

The Orlando Pride announced Wednesday that the club and forward Gabi Nunes have mutually agreed to terminate her contract. The 29-year-old had only just signed with the Pride on Aug. 4 on a contract through the 2026 season, but she managed just two appearances for 16 total minutes while in Orlando. Nunes joined the club after stints in Europe with Aston Villa, Levante UD, and Madrid CFF.

Barbra Banda Details Her Time in the NWSL

Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda signed a new contract with the club through the 2029 season and she spoke on how she’s grown as a player since joining the league in 2024.

“Honestly, I’ve learned a lot from this league. I would say it’s one of the best leagues in the world because the teams are so competitive, and you never go into a game relaxed,” Banda said. “You need to up your game each and every time. You need to be mentally fit, physically fit. It’s a battle you need to win, and you have to be smart at the end of the day. I feel I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve improved myself in so many ways. And, not forgetting my teammates, who have helped me to improve, and the technical staff as well. I can feel it myself, this level, it’s different.”

Banda has been phenomenal for the Pride, scoring 41 goals in 62 appearances across all competitions and helping the club win the double in her first year in the league. She’s been one of the best strikers in the league’s history, and it’s great to see her sticking around in the City Beautiful.

U.S. Eliminated From U-20 Women’s World Cup

The United States U-20 Women’s National Team drew 1-1 against Brazil but lost in the ensuing penalty shootout in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup’s round of 16. Brazil took the lead in the 59th minute off of a corner kick, but the U.S. equalized in the 63rd minute, thanks to a strike from Seattle Reign midfielder Ainsley McCammon. The Yanks made four of their attempts in the shootout, but Brazil ultimately prevailed by making all five. It’s a tough way to exit the tournament for the U.S., which was matched up against Brazil in the knockout stage after finishing third in its group.
