Good morning, Mane Landers! As the week wraps up, I hope you are ready for kickoff weekend! Before we hop into today's links, we'll take the time out to wish a happy 20th birthday to Orlando City defender Tyler Turner! No better way to celebrate than with a successful weekend for both OCSC and OCB. Now, to the links.

Kaká receives Brazil call-up

Kaká has been called up once more to the Brazilian National Team for a pair of World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay on March 25 and Paraguay on March 29. Orlando City has a bye for the March 25-26 round of fixtures, so Ricky won’t miss any league matches while away before facing the Portland Timbers on April 3 in Orlando. The call-up fulfills the midfielder’s ambitions of remaining a part of the Brazilian international set up.

"I hope so. I will do what I can," he told reporters. "I was with the team in two games recently. I want to begin this season at a high level, physically healthy, so that Dunga will call me to be in the two upcoming games."

If his preseason performances are anything to go by, then he will certainly start the season at a high level. Hopefully this form will continue once the games start to matter.

Ramos signs contract extension

Orlando City has officially announced the contract extension of defender Rafael Ramos. The extension, which was originally leaked in mid-February, is for two years and the contract has an option for an additional two years. As always, per MLS policy, terms were not disclosed. Ramos made 25 appearances (24 starts) last year and is among the brightest defensive talents in the league.

Brek Talks OCSC, USMNT and Fatherhood

Brek Shea is aiming to play a full season for the Lions in 2016 after an up-and-down 2015 that was affected by injuries both to Shea himself and elsewhere in the side. In this piece from mlssoccer.com, Shea discusses his goals for the season and his intent to get back into the good graces of U.S. Men's National Team skipper Jürgen Klinsmann, as well as the new perspective he has since becoming a father. Don't worry though, Brek will still be Brek.

Orlando City forwards on the preseason hype train

After a record-setting rookie season a year ago, it is no surprise to see Cyle Larin named as one of the most exciting young players to watch for in MLS this year. Not to be outdone is fellow OCSC forward Carlos Rivas, who also makes an appearance on the list. Although his first campaign was nowhere near as successful (zero goals, four assists) as Larin’s, there is plenty to be excited about regarding Rivas and the attacking options at Coach Adrian Heath’s disposal.

Forward Keegan Smith joins OCB

In a move that has gone under the radar, Orlando City B has added to its depth up front with the acquisition of forward Keegan Smith. Smith, a University of San Diego product, was selected in the second round of this year's MLS SuperDraft by Montreal with the 39th overall election.

U.S. Soccer legend Brandi Chastain to donate brain for CTE research

Former USWNT star Brandi Chastain has agreed to donate her brain to the Concussion Legacy Foundation at Boston University for CTE study. Although never officially diagnosed with a concussion, she has said she suffered two during her college playing days, but did not experience any side-effects and returned to the game on both occasions. Her donation has the potential to offer insight into CTE in women, an area that currently lacks significant information.

"We currently know so little about how gender influences outcome after trauma," Ann McKee, the director of the BU CTE Program said. "Her pledge marks an important step to expand our knowledge in this critical area."

In related news, former U.S. international Davy Arnaud will retire and be a part of the D.C. United coaching staff rather than playing this season due to lingering concussion symptoms. Arnaud suffered the concussion in practice in August, and will hang up his boots after 14 MLS seasons.

Happy Friday, Mane Landers! There’s plenty of soccer to look forward to this weekend, with both the Orlando Pride and Orlando City in action on Saturday before Orlando City B finishes its regular season on Sunday. Hopefully, we’ll have plenty to celebrate over the next few days. But for now, let’s jump right into today’s links from around the soccer world!

Justin Ellis Named to First USMNT Roster

United States Men’s National Team Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino called up 28 players for training camp ahead of the team’s first friendlies since the World Cup. Orlando City forward Justin Ellis has had a breakout season at just 19 years old and is one of 13 uncapped players to earn a spot on the roster. Cavan Sullivan, Zavier Gozo, and Julian Hall are a few of the other young talents to keep an eye out for during these matches. Former Lion Alex Freeman, who scored for the U.S. at the World Cup, was called up as well. The U.S. will take on Peru on Sept. 26 at Inter.co Stadium, so hopefully fans will be able to see some familiar faces. Following that match, the Yanks will play against Chile on Sept. 29 in St. Louis before friendlies against Mexico on Oct. 3 and Canada on Oct. 6.

Lions Called Up For International Duty

Ellis isn’t the only Lion who will be with their national team over the next couple of weeks. Midfielder Wilder Cartagena was called up for Peru’s friendlies, along with former Lions Pedro Gallese and Yoshimar Yotun.

Tyrese Spicer was called up for Trinidad & Tobago’s upcoming Concacaf Nations League matches with spots in the quarterfinals up for grabs. Trinidad & Tobago will play against Haiti and the Dominican Republic before a pair of matches against Curacao.

Defender David Brekalo was also called up for Nations League games and will head to Europe for Slovenia’s matches in League B against Scotland, Switzerland, and North Macedonia.

Orlando City’s Club Profile Revealed

MLS released the club roster profiles for each team as of Sept. 15. These profiles have been a great way to see how each team’s roster is constructed, while also showing the contract and option details for each player. The Lions have all Designated Player and MLS U22 Initiative slots filled, with Eduard Atuesta, David Brekalo, and Braian Ojeda listed as TAM players. The profile also reveals that Orlando has $1.86 million in 2026 General Allocation Money remaining, and it’s hard not to wonder about the improvements that could have been made to the team with that money.

Vlatko Andonovski Joins the Chicago Stars

The Chicago Stars have hired Vlatko Andonovski as the club’s chief soccer officer to right the ship after another rough season. Already eliminated from playoff contention, the Stars have only won five games so far this season and fired Martin Sjögren as head coach last month. Andonovski joins the Stars after terminating his contract with the Kansas City Current on Sept. 7. The former United States Women’s National Team head coach has had plenty of success in women’s soccer and it’ll be interesting to see if he can turn things around in Chicago.

  • From the heavyweight match between Roma and Inter in Serie A to the derby match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, here are the matchups to watch for in Europe this weekend.

Lions lose in Ohio, Pride part ways with Gabi Nunes, Barbra Banda’s league lessons, and more.

Well, Wednesday night could have gone better. It’s disappointing that we won’t be able to see the U.S. Open Cup final in Orlando, but there’s still plenty of soccer left to play this year for us to get excited about. Before we dive into Orlando City’s game and the rest of today’s links, let’s all wish a happy birthday to Orlando Pride defender Kerry Abello!

Orlando City Falls in Columbus

The Lions were eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup after losing 2-1 on the road to the Columbus Crew in the semifinals. Orlando City nemesis Josef Martinez gave the Crew an early lead, but the Lions managed to level things before halftime through Martin Ojeda. Unfortunately, Antoine Griezmann had to exit the match and the Lions were subpar without him, conceding another goal and failing to muster a single shot on target, let alone find another equalizer. All attention now turns towards securing a spot in the playoffs with nine games left in the regular season.

Orlando Pride, Gabi Nunes Agree to Part Ways

The Orlando Pride announced Wednesday that the club and forward Gabi Nunes have mutually agreed to terminate her contract. The 29-year-old had only just signed with the Pride on Aug. 4 on a contract through the 2026 season, but she managed just two appearances for 16 total minutes while in Orlando. Nunes joined the club after stints in Europe with Aston Villa, Levante UD, and Madrid CFF.

Barbra Banda Details Her Time in the NWSL

Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda signed a new contract with the club through the 2029 season and she spoke on how she’s grown as a player since joining the league in 2024.

“Honestly, I’ve learned a lot from this league. I would say it’s one of the best leagues in the world because the teams are so competitive, and you never go into a game relaxed,” Banda said. “You need to up your game each and every time. You need to be mentally fit, physically fit. It’s a battle you need to win, and you have to be smart at the end of the day. I feel I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve improved myself in so many ways. And, not forgetting my teammates, who have helped me to improve, and the technical staff as well. I can feel it myself, this level, it’s different.”

Banda has been phenomenal for the Pride, scoring 41 goals in 62 appearances across all competitions and helping the club win the double in her first year in the league. She’s been one of the best strikers in the league’s history, and it’s great to see her sticking around in the City Beautiful.

U.S. Eliminated From U-20 Women’s World Cup

The United States U-20 Women’s National Team drew 1-1 against Brazil but lost in the ensuing penalty shootout in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup’s round of 16. Brazil took the lead in the 59th minute off of a corner kick, but the U.S. equalized in the 63rd minute, thanks to a strike from Seattle Reign midfielder Ainsley McCammon. The Yanks made four of their attempts in the shootout, but Brazil ultimately prevailed by making all five. It’s a tough way to exit the tournament for the U.S., which was matched up against Brazil in the knockout stage after finishing third in its group.

Orlando City’s Open Cup match day, the Summer of Maxime Crepeau, USMNT news, and more.

Dan MacDonald, The Mane Land

Welcome to Wednesday, Mane Landers. It’s match day as Orlando City looks to advance to the final of the 2026 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. If the Lions are able to win tonight, they will host the final at Inter.co Stadium. That is something I’d greatly like to see again. Hopefully, Orlando City can continue the good run of form for at least another match. For now, let’s get to the links.

Orlando’s Open Cup Continues

Antione Griezmann got a whole 25 minutes or so of rest in the match against Toronto FC. As such, I know he will be fully rested for the U.S. Open Cup match against the Columbus Crew. Orlando City is one victory away from playing for a second Open Cup trophy. St. Louis City and the Colorado Rapids play in the other semifinal match. Orlando City and the Columbus Crew are both looking for a second title in the competition.

Summer of Crepeau

Maxime Crepeau has professionally had a great summer since the World Cup began. He was the starting goalkeeper for Canada and acquitted himself well. Upon returning to Orlando City, he has been one of the best players on the team. He did, sadly, lose his father earlier this month, and as such, he wasn’t called up for Canada’s fall friendlies. As tough a time as it must be for Crepeau, he has performed admirably for Orlando City.

Orlando Pride News

The Orlando Pride maintained their 11th place in the standings and in the Goal.com NWSL power rankings. Of course, the future is brighter thank to the Pride signing Barbra Banda through 2029. On the back of that good news, season ticket memberships for 2027 are now on sale. Marta made an appearance in the latest match, and she and former Pride striker Alex Morgan, along with Crystal Dunn, sent an open letter to FIFA asking the organization to line up the U-20 Women’s World Cup with the international calendar.

USMNT News

U.S. Soccer has selected TQL Stadium in Cincinnati to host the home leg of the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal round in November. The opponent will be determined following the conclusion of the Concacaf Nations League group stage League A matches. Unfortunately, Diego Luna won’t be available for selection, as he will be out for months due to a knee injury that may require surgery. Over in Europe, other USMNT players are getting ready for the Europa League competition.
