PawedCast Episode 265: Revs Rewind, Pride-Reign, Nashville & D.C. United Previews and More

Orlando City lost its fourth straight match on Saturday and yet somehow it felt a lot less terrible than some of the other recent losses. The league-leading New England Revolution are formidable, especially in their own building (with the awful football lines and plastic grass), but the Lions did play mostly well in the match. We break down the game, including some tough bounces, calls, and slips that helped the Revs get the 2-1 result. And yes, we do discuss penalty kicks as well. And, as usual, we select our Man of the Match.

The Orlando Pride got clobbered 3-0 at OL Reign and while a result on the other corner of the continent against a team in good form was never going to be easy, it sure seemed at least possible until the opening whistle blew. Orlando’s slow starts cost them dearly in this one and it wasn’t until the game was out of reach when the Pride started playing soccer.

This week’s mailbag asked whether former FC Dallas coach Luchi Gonzalez could join Oscar Pareja and Luiz Muzzi in Orlando, who from the Pride should be poached for a professional co-ed soccer club, and which players would be the ideal starting XI for the upcoming USMNT qualifiers. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC.

We close the show with our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City at Nashville SC tonight and vs. D.C. United at Exploria Stadium on Saturday.

That’s all for this week.

Stay safe and enjoy the show!

Here’s how No. 265 went down:

0:15 – Orlando City lost again but didn’t look nearly as bad as some recent matches and at least the Lions finished with 11 men, which is kind of an improvement.

34:17 – The Pride got blown out in Washington state, our mailbag confuses and perplexes us, and we try to predict what’s going to happen at Nashville and at home against D.C.

PawedCast Episode 421: Orlando City’s Injured Players, Columbus Crew Preview, and More

Orlando City looks to be without another key player Saturday when the Crew visit Orlando.

We start this show a little bit differently. One of our founding members, who helped this podcast and the blog that hosts it become independent in 2023 hasn’t been around much lately. We touched on why and saluted his contributions and his passion for Orlando City.

After that, we dove into a chat about Orlando City’s injuries. As of Thursday, Duncan McGuire wasn’t fully participating in training, nor has defender Robin Jansson yet joined the main group for full contact drills. That’s not the best news with the defending MLS Cup winners visiting Inter&Co Stadium on Saturday. However, there is a player nearing a return, and it’s an attacker, so that’s helpful. Whether it will be helpful against the Columbus Crew or will have to wait a while longer remains to be seen.

This week’s mailbagbox had nothing in it when we started recording, but we still managed to field questions on why a Crew fan should switch loyalties to Orlando City and whether the Lions will ever sign another big-name player. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

Finally, we turned our attention toward the matchup with Columbus. The Crew may not have Cucho Martinez this week, but they’re still a formidable bunch. We provide our key matchups for Saturday night and give you our score predictions.

Here’s how No. 421 went down:

0:15 – A chat about one of our own and then a discussion of Orlando City’s injured guys.

11:35 – Our mailbagbox pendulum swung the other way, but we still had some questions to answer.

22:30 – Our look ahead to the Lions against the Crew.

SkoPurp Soccer Episode 44: Reign Rewind, Portland Preview, and More

The Pride picked up their first win in the state of Washington and look forward to Friday’s showdown with the red-hot Thorns.

The Orlando Pride appeared to be headed to an absolute beatdown of the Seattle Reign on the road Sunday, but a third goal was (correctly) overturned, and a Seattle goal late in first-half stoppage time gave the hosts a lifeline. The Reign tied the game eventually, but the Pride have Barbra Banda. Sometimes that’s the only difference you need. Orlando won in Seattle for the first time and tied a league record with its seventh consecutive win.

We break down the Pride’s road victory, check in on our score predictions, and make our selections for Player of the Match. Great stuff from Seb Hines and company.

Our mailbagbox this week was quite stuffed. Our listeners asked us about that foul on Banda, theme nights for Pride matches, the lines on the field, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We’d also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we’ll find them easily and read them on the show.

After the mailbagbox, we dove into the game of the season so far, as the Portland Thorns visit the Pride Friday night in what is the league’s first-ever battle between two teams on winning streaks of four or more matches. The Pride will need to be at their best both offensively and defensively to get a result against the surging Thorns. We provide our key matchups and score predictions for a match that Orlando could probably win and still somehow not rise to the top of the ESPN power rankings.

Here’s how Episode 44 went down:

0:15 – The Pride got into an unexpected shootout in Seattle but came out on top. Reign, you’ve been Banda’d!

20:13 The mailbagbox is starting to grow nicely.

35:16 – A massive battle awaits Friday with the arrival of the Thorns in Orlando.

PawedCast Episode 420: San Jose Rewind and Listener Mail

The Lions finish a rough stretch of three games in eight days unbeaten with their first ever win in San Jose.

Orlando City went out west and did something that the Lions have never done before — beat the Earthquakes in San Jose. Orlando brought home all three points courtesy of a 1-0 win supplied by Jack Lynn’s late strike. It was a hard-fought match between a pair of leggy teams that each played counterattacking soccer and yet there were scoring chances for both, rather than the game devolving largely into a stalemate in the middle of the pitch.

We looked back at our score predictions to see how we did (happily we were both wrong), broke down the game, and made our selections for Man of the Match.

This week’s mailbagbox was absolutely loaded, asking us questions about cruise vacations, the USMNT, The Soccer Tournament, Mel Brooks movies, what we’d wear to the game as players, Jack Lynn’s (lack of) goal celebrations, and more. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

We’ll be back before the end of the week to preview Orlando City’s coming matchup on Saturday against the Columbus Crew.

Be sure to rate and review our show wherever you get your podcasts. Remember, we’ll read any five-star reviews we get on Apple Podcasts on the next show.

Here’s how No. 420 went down:

0:15 – Orlando City and San Jose tangled in Norcal and the Cardiac Cats won the day.

23:03 – Our mailbagbox was insanely full this week, which is awesome.
