PawedCast Episode 264: Montreal & Philly Rewinds, USWNT, Revs Preview and More

Orlando City is sliding down the mountain right now and needs to find its ice axe to try to arrest its rapid descent before something catastrophic happens. The Lions had two matches in the past week and while they stopped scoring goals on themselves, they still can’t stop the other team from doing it and they also seem averse to finishing with 11 men on the pitch. None of this is particularly good but we have to talk about it anyway. We do, but under protest.

The Orlando Pride, meanwhile, were off this week for the international break. Alex Morgan was an exception though and she was exceptional in scoring a hat trick in the second of two friendlies against Paraguay. Her performance Tuesday night hopefully has her confidence soaring ahead of the Pride’s trip to play OL Reign this weekend. It’s the most difficult road trip remaining in the regular season and coming home with any points would be a huge step toward the NWSL postseason.

This week’s mailbag was quite full, with questions about Orlando City’s current form, the fact that no one could seemingly stand up last Wednesday vs. Montreal, movies that set the tone in the first scene, and more. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC.

We close the show with our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City at the New England Revolution.

That’s all for this week.

Stay safe and enjoy the show!

Here’s how No. 264 went down:

0:15 – Orlando City continues to be bad at soccer at the moment and we’re hoping they decide to be good at soccer again soon.

33:29 – The USWNT scored a whole lot of goals against Paraguay, we had a pretty full mailbag, and we’ve got our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City’s trip to the awful building known as Gillette Stadium.

PawedCast Episode 422: Crew Rewind, OCB-Huntsville, Chicago Preview, and More

The Lions weren’t clinical enough to overcome a curious officiating decision but the Young Lions romped.

Orlando City faced the Columbus Crew with a solid plan and it seemed to be working when a penalty was awarded to the Lions late in the first half. However, whenever the Professional Referee Organization gets involved, bad things tend to happen to Orlando, such as a soft foul given at the other end while a foul in the buildup to that foul was not given. The Crew managed to tack one on in the second half after scoring the penalty late in the first to get the win. Orlando’s offense continues to be anemic.

We looked back at our score predictions, broke down the game, and made our Man of the Match selections.

This week’s mailbagbox asked us about playing out of the back, conceding possession to the other team, using five substitutes, and former Lion Pierre da Silva (which was a blast from the past). Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

After the mailbagbox, we discussed OCB’s dominant 5-0 win at home Sunday against Huntsville City. The Young Lions could have won by an even bigger margin had they been clinical at all with some guilt-edged chances in the first half, but a big +5 in the goal differential column and a win are nothing to be upset about.

Finally, we turned our attention toward Orlando City’s visit to Soldier Field to play the Chicago Fire Wednesday. After a brief discussion on the Fire’s season so far, we discussed the key matchups we expect and made our score predictions.

Here’s how No. 422 went down:

0:15 – The Lions didn’t get it done against the Crew. We mourn the loss.

21:19 – Our mailbagbox got philosophical about tactics.

37:02 – OCB’s lopsided win and a preview of the Lions at the Fire on Wednesday.

PawedCast Episode 421: Orlando City’s Injured Players, Columbus Crew Preview, and More

Orlando City looks to be without another key player Saturday when the Crew visit Orlando.

We start this show a little bit differently. One of our founding members, who helped this podcast and the blog that hosts it become independent in 2023 hasn’t been around much lately. We touched on why and saluted his contributions and his passion for Orlando City.

After that, we dove into a chat about Orlando City’s injuries. As of Thursday, Duncan McGuire wasn’t fully participating in training, nor has defender Robin Jansson yet joined the main group for full contact drills. That’s not the best news with the defending MLS Cup winners visiting Inter&Co Stadium on Saturday. However, there is a player nearing a return, and it’s an attacker, so that’s helpful. Whether it will be helpful against the Columbus Crew or will have to wait a while longer remains to be seen.

This week’s mailbagbox had nothing in it when we started recording, but we still managed to field questions on why a Crew fan should switch loyalties to Orlando City and whether the Lions will ever sign another big-name player. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

Finally, we turned our attention toward the matchup with Columbus. The Crew may not have Cucho Martinez this week, but they’re still a formidable bunch. We provide our key matchups for Saturday night and give you our score predictions.

Here’s how No. 421 went down:

0:15 – A chat about one of our own and then a discussion of Orlando City’s injured guys.

11:35 – Our mailbagbox pendulum swung the other way, but we still had some questions to answer.

22:30 – Our look ahead to the Lions against the Crew.

SkoPurp Soccer Episode 44: Reign Rewind, Portland Preview, and More

The Pride picked up their first win in the state of Washington and look forward to Friday’s showdown with the red-hot Thorns.

The Orlando Pride appeared to be headed to an absolute beatdown of the Seattle Reign on the road Sunday, but a third goal was (correctly) overturned, and a Seattle goal late in first-half stoppage time gave the hosts a lifeline. The Reign tied the game eventually, but the Pride have Barbra Banda. Sometimes that’s the only difference you need. Orlando won in Seattle for the first time and tied a league record with its seventh consecutive win.

We break down the Pride’s road victory, check in on our score predictions, and make our selections for Player of the Match. Great stuff from Seb Hines and company.

Our mailbagbox this week was quite stuffed. Our listeners asked us about that foul on Banda, theme nights for Pride matches, the lines on the field, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We’d also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we’ll find them easily and read them on the show.

After the mailbagbox, we dove into the game of the season so far, as the Portland Thorns visit the Pride Friday night in what is the league’s first-ever battle between two teams on winning streaks of four or more matches. The Pride will need to be at their best both offensively and defensively to get a result against the surging Thorns. We provide our key matchups and score predictions for a match that Orlando could probably win and still somehow not rise to the top of the ESPN power rankings.

Here’s how Episode 44 went down:

0:15 – The Pride got into an unexpected shootout in Seattle but came out on top. Reign, you’ve been Banda’d!

20:13 The mailbagbox is starting to grow nicely.

35:16 – A massive battle awaits Friday with the arrival of the Thorns in Orlando.
