Orlando City vs. Charlotte FC: Player Grades and Man of the Match

Published

on

Orlando City bounced back from the New York loss with a 2-1 win at home against Charlotte FC. Ruan scored Orlando’s first goal and then assisted on its second goal late in the first half by teeing up Facundo Torres. A penalty converted by Christian Fuchs gave Charlotte life, but the defense hung in there to claim all three points.

Here’s how I saw the individual performances of each Lion on the pitch in the win.

Starters

GK, Pedro Gallese, 5.5 — He only faced one shot on target, but it was a penalty kick. Gallese committed first on a patient spot kick from Fuchs that spoiled his clean sheet. In regards to his distribution, he was successful on four of his 11 attempted long balls and completed 74% of his 27 passes. The Peruvian did well running time off the clock late in the match without being booked.

D, Joao Moutinho, 6.5 — Moutinho only had one cross, which was unsuccessful, as he often stayed back as third center back of sorts while Ruan wreaked havoc up the field. It was still a busy night for the left back as he led the Lions with 66 touches and also had 44 passes at a great 89% success rate while completing both of his long balls. He had five tackles, two interceptions, and four clearances while also winning all three of his aerial duels. Moutinho’s evolving into a defensive powerhouse this season and this match was no exception, as he was a key reason why Charlotte only had one shot on target, the penalty.

D, Rodrigo Schlegel, 6 — The Argentine center back led the team with a whopping nine clearances as he did well putting a stop to Charlotte’s attempts to score. However, he was called for a foul in the box after making contact with Alan Franco in a play by Charlotte that seemed more like a Hail Mary than a realistic chance to score. Charlotte received a penalty for the incident while Schlegel was handed a yellow card. The penalty call was soft but the contact was unnecessary. Schlegel helped Orlando see the game out and also had a tackle and an interception. His 46 passes were the most by any Lion and he completed them at a solid 87% success rate. Schlegel was also accurate on four of his eight long balls, so it was a good game from him in terms of distribution.

D, Robin Jansson, 6.5 — In his 100th appearance for Orlando City, the Beefy Swede did well on both sides of the ball. He assisted on Ruan’s goal after making a clever redirection on Benji Michel’s low cross that served the ball to Ruan on a silver platter. Jansson also helped create the goal, dribbling down the field and getting the ball out wide to Michel. His lone shot came off of a set piece situation as his shot from the edge of the top of the box went over the bar. He was able to convert from center back to striker in the blink of an eye during the match, adding another dimension to Orlando’s attack. Jansson had five clearances and two interceptions while completing 85% of his 26 passes. He didn’t commit a foul in the match, but still received a yellow card for dissent over questionable officiating and will miss Orlando’s next game.

D, Ruan, 7.5 (MotM) — The right back scored his first goal of the season with a clinical finish wide open in the box. He could’ve had a second goal late in the first half after sprinting down the pitch on a counter with only goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina to beat, but he smartly laid the ball off for Torres to easily put away. Ruan’s speed made him a good match-up against 36-year-old Fuchs and Charlotte was unable to deal with him. Both of his aerial crosses were picked off by Kahlina, but his low efforts put defenders in tough spots and earned a corner. He also connected on both of his long balls and had 43 passes at a 77% success rate. Although he wasn’t able to entirely bend the game to his will, he was Orlando’s best weapon on offense and he led the Lions with three interceptions while also contributing a tackle and a clearance. It was easily his best game of the season and hopefully the confidence he showed after his goal will continue moving forward.

MF, Cesar Araujo, 6.5 — Araujo did a fantastic job keeping Karol Swiderski quiet throughout the match, making sure to give the Polish striker no breathing room. He won three fouls, all in Orlando’s defensive end, and had two tackles, an interception, and two clearances. Araujo completed 28 of his 32 passes for a great 88% success rate and two of his three long balls found their target as well. The 21-year-old also won both of his aerial duels and did a good job lending support along the back line. After receiving four yellow cards in his first six appearances, this game marked four in a row that he wasn’t booked. He’s young and new to MLS, but has quickly proven himself as a great acquisition by the Lions.

MF, Junior Urso, 6 — The Bear had a solid, albeit quiet, outing in the midfield. Although he didn’t have any defensive stats, he applied pressure to help slow down Charlotte’s offense and was there to collect loose balls when they were coughed up. Urso completed 81% of his 32 passes for a decent success rate and was also successful on two of his three attempted dribbles. He was subbed off in the 65th minute for fresher legs.

MF, Benji Michel, 6 — The Homegrown Player did well on Orlando’s first goal, beating his man and drawing in two defenders before delivering a venomous cutback pass in front of goal to Jansson. His only shot of the match was a headed effort right at Kahlina after a great cross from Torres. Michel’s lone cross was unsuccessful, but he completed all but one of his 13 passes for a strong 92% success rate in 80 minutes of action. He didn’t see much of the ball, but did well when he did and helped out defensively with a tackle and an interception.

MF, Mauricio Pereyra, 7 — Pereyra led the Lions with three key passes as he once again pulled the strings on offense. In the buildup to Orlando’s second goal, he sprung Ruan on the counter with a great ball forward from a tough position for the Brazilian to chase down. Orlando’s captain had another great pass in the first pass when he threaded a ball through defenders from distance to send Kara in on goal. Although neither of his two crosses connected, the Uruguayan was accurate on four of his five long balls and completed 83% of his 42 passes. Pereyra didn’t officially record a shot, but did hit the crossbar on an attempt that was either an attempt at goal or aimed at finding Ercan Kara at the far post. He also hustled on defense and had four tackles, an interception, and a clearance, while also winning a team-high four fouls.

MF, Facundo Torres, 7 — Torres scored his first goal at Exploria Stadium by turning on the jets and running from one end of the field to the other to make sure he was in position to score if needed. He buried the chance and doubled Orlando’s lead before halftime. The goal was one of two shots from Torres in the match, with the other sent into the stands. Torres had two key passes, sending in a nice cross for Michel in the 14th minute and setting up an opportunity for Silvester van der Water in the 85th. He played every minute of the match and completed 77% of his 35 passes. One of his two attempted crosses found their mark and neither of his two long balls were successful, but he still did well to spark things offensively. The 22-year-old truly was relentless from start to finish for the Lions as he ran all over the field to close down opponents, collect loose balls before they went out of play, and made himself an available outlet for teammates. Torres had two clearances, an interception, and enough fuel left in the tank left in the match to help Orlando secure all three points.

F, Ercan Kara, 6 — The Austrian forward may not have contributed towards a goal, but he was fairly active in terms of holdup play. Kara’s best opportunity came in the 33rd minute, when Pereyra found him making a well-timed run with a through ball. However, he was stymied by good defending from Christian Makoun, who hung tight with Kara and then blocked his only shot of the game. Kara won two of his three aerial duels and had 14 passes at a 78% success rate. He wasn’t able to imprint himself on the game and was subbed off in the 65th minute for Alexandre Pato.

Substitutes

F, Alexandre Pato (65’), 5 — The Brazilian had an off night as he only completed two of his seven passes for a 29% success rate. That being said, the game script didn’t benefit his playing style all that well. Pato does his best work when surrounded by other Lions to play off of, but the Lions sat back as the game went on and Charlotte pushed numbers forward, and he was stranded up top on occasion. He won two of his five aerial duels and had two clearances, including the final one to end Charlotte’s late surge. Pato wasn’t able to exert his skillset to its fullest in his first appearance off the bench for Orlando this season.

MF, Andres Perea (65’), 5 — Coming on to give Orlando some fresher legs in the midfield, Perea had 19 touches and completed 69% of his 16 passes. He helped out defensively with two clearances and an interception to do his part in securing the victory. Perea didn’t make much of an impact in the match, but didn’t necessarily need to as he continues to receive minutes off the bench for Orlando.

MF, Sebas Mendez (74’), 6 — Mendez helped stabilize things for Orlando, completing all three of his passes and chipping in defensively with two clearances, an interception, and a tackle. Araujo may have claimed the starting job over Mendez, but the two make for a nice one-two punch over the course of a match as Mendez can come in and take care of the ball while maintaining the team’s bite on defense.

MF, Silvester van der Water (80’), N/A — The Dutchman was hungry during his brief appearance, putting a shot on frame and not being afraid to take on defenders. He completed both of his passes, was successful on his lone long ball attempt, and added a tackle on defense. Unfortunately, he landed awkwardly on his ankle in the dying moments of the game and had to be helped off the field without putting any weight on his left foot.

D, Kyle Smith (80’), N/A — Smith wasn’t on the field long enough to be graded but did well. He had three clearances and a tackle and solidified Orlando’s forces on the right side of defense. He had 14 touches, won both of his aerial duels, and completed four of his seven passes for a 57% success rate.

That’s how I saw each individual performance in Orlando City’s 2-1 win over Charlotte. The penalty made the match a bit closer than the Lions likely would’ve preferred, but it was a nice game from them.

Antoine Griezmann earns MLS Player of the Matchday, Pride players up for weekly honors, lessons from MLS matchday 22, and more.

Good morning, everyone. It was an improved, but not perfect weekend for Orlando’s soccer teams, as the three sides combined to take six of the nine points on offer. The midweek games have finally ceased for the time being, but Orlando City and the Orlando Pride will both be back in action on Saturday, while Orlando City B will try to get things back on track on Sunday. We’ve got a whole host of things to cover this morning, so let’s get into the links. But before we do, we want to give a big shout out and thank you to Barry, our latest TAM-level subscriber at The Mane Land’s subscription service at Buy Me a Coffee. If you’d like to check out what’s on offer to see if it’s for you, click here (you can also just make a donation if you want to support us and subscribing isn’t for you).

Antoine Griezmann Named MLS Player of the Matchday

Designated Player Antoine Griezmann played a starring role in Orlando City’s win over Real Salt Lake, as the Frenchman bagged a second-half brace to complete the Lions’ comeback and secure a vital three points. He’s been rewarded for his efforts with not just a starting spot in the MLS Team of the Matchday, but with his first MLS Player of the Matchday nod as well. Griezmann’s double makes it three goals and two assists in six league games since joining the team following the World Cup break, and while the team’s form hasn’t been flawless, it certainly looks a lot better with him in the fold. Here’s hoping his good form continues!

Pride Players Up for Weekly Honors

Sticking with the topic of weekly awards, Barbra Banda has been nominated for the NWSL Assist of the Week. The striker is most known for her prolific goal scoring, but she turned provider in the Orlando Pride’s 1-0 win over the Washington Spirit. Banda drove at the defense in the opening moments of the game before playing a beautiful ball across the face of the box, where it found an onrushing Haley McCutcheon, who put her effort into the back of the net. It was a great all-around effort from Banda, as she made a tackle and won the ball on the halfway line before leading the break up the field and playing the key pass.

Speaking of McCutcheon, the Pride’s goal scorer has been nominated for the NWSL Player of the Week. McCutcheon took her goal well, and had a chance to tack on a late insurance goal, but her effort was saved by Spirit goalkeeper Sandy MacIver. Make sure you go vote for both players to win their respective awards!

Lessons from MLS Matchday 22

Matchday 22 is in the books for Major League Soccer, and there were plenty of things to be gleaned from the weekend’s action. Griezmann did a little bit of everything for Orlando City once again, but he wasn’t the only MLS newcomer that made a difference. Josh Sargent scored his first goal for Toronto FC since May as he helped the Reds knock off Inter Miami on the road, and Jack Harrison marked his first game against former team New York City FC with a gorgeous secondary assist on the game’s opening goal. He’s got five assists in four games since joining during the summer window and so far looks like a Designated Player spot smartly used by the New England Revolution.

Americans in Midweek Action

There are a number of Americans who will be playing matches during the working week, so make sure you get everything marked down on your calendars. Sebastian Berhalter, Max Arfsten, and Aidan Morris get things going later today when their Middlesborough side travels to face Doncaster in the Carabao Cup. Things continue on Wednesday when Tanner Tesssmann and Lyon play Fenerbahce in the second leg of a UEFA Champions League qualifying tie, with the matchup finely balanced at 1-1 after the first leg. Thursday will see Folarin Balogun and Monaco try to hold onto a 3-2 lead over Gornik Zabrze in the second leg of UEFA Conference League qualifying, before Yunus Musah (and possibly Christian Pulisic, if he’s recovered from injury) and AC Milan face Gianluca Busio and Venezia in Serie A play.

Orlando City vs. Real Salt Lake: Player Grades and Man of the Match

How did your favorite Lions perform in Orlando City’s 2-1 home win against Real Salt Lake?

Orlando City got a much-needed win on Saturday night, but it was anything but easy. Despite holding the bulk of possession through the first half against a heavily rotated Real Salt Lake side, the Lions generated zero shots and fell behind when the visitors took advantage of young fullback Zakaria Taifi, who was deputized at left back due to the absences of Bernardo Rhein and Adrian Marin. But Orlando rallied after halftime due in large part to three important halftime subs and the introduction of Tyrese Spicer to storm back for a 2-1 win, with Antoine Griezmann scoring both second-half goals.

Let’s take a look at how Orlando City’s players rated in their matchup against Real Salt Lake.

Starters

GK, Maxime Crepeau, 6 — Salt Lake scored one goal out of four shots on target against the Orlando goalkeeper, and he did well to save two of them, especially a diving one hander in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time. One was blocked by Eduard Atuesta, and the one that slipped by was a tough one that would have been difficult for any keeper. Dominik Marczuk put a first-touch volley shot past Crepeau from close range, after Sam Junqua’s lofted ball over the Orlando defense left him one-on-one. Otherwise, it was a relatively quiet night for the Lions’ goalkeeper. His passing was 78.1% accurate, hitting six out of 13 long-ball attempts.

D, Zakaria Taifi, 6 — It was a mixed bag for Taifi in this match. He struggled a bit in the first half with some sloppy touches that interrupted the Lions flow in possession. He also provided a well-weighted through ball for Tiago early on in the match that ended in an Orlando corner. The biggest mark against him though was that he allowed Marczuk to run past him into the box in the 36th minute, putting him in on goal, unopposed, for Salt Lake’s goal. Taifi improved markedly in the second half though, as did the rest of the Lions, and he helped to create some clear-cut attacking sequences. He got off a couple of shots himself as well, pinging one off the outside of the left post. He contributed a key pass and was clean in his passing at 89.2%. Defensively, he had one interception.

D, Robin Jansson, 6.5 — Jansson bounced back from Wednesday’s game against Chicago. He made an excellent clearance after a hard recovery run that could have easily been an own goal, albeit on an offside ball, but the effort and skill still count. He threw himself at a charging Marczuk, preventing a breakaway and taking a knock in the process, although he was able to continue without too much trouble. He kept his head, as the captain should, and did his job, contributing four clearances, completing three out of four long balls, and passing with 98.6% accuracy.

D, David Brekalo, 6 — Brekalo had a steady match against Real Salt Lake. He lost a 50/50 ball in a bad spot early in the match, allowing a dangerous breakaway but also fought hard defending the Orlando box all night. He stood his ground and provided a solid defensive presence if nothing else. He didn’t stand out in any conspicuous way, and made no offensive contributions, but he did finish with a team-high six clearances and was 98.4% accurate in his passing.

D, Griffin Dorsey, 7 — Dorsey was active in the attack down the right side of the pitch as we have come to expect. He combined well with Justin Ellis, Atuesta and Griezmann, especially in the second half. He was busy on the other side of the ball as well, anticipating the RSL attack and making a crucial interception in the box in the 64th minute, that would have likely wound up as a dangerous shot otherwise for Diego Luna. He was precise in his passing at 89.7%, contributed one key pass, and attempted five crosses with one completed. Defensively, he logged two tackles, an interception, and a clearance.

MF, Ivan Angulo, 5.5 — Angulo played mostly in his traditional left attacking wing position against Real Salt Lake, but he showed signs of fatigue and made some mistakes that could have been costly. Crepeau’s huge save bailed him out for his turnover in the fifth minute of stoppage time just before halftime that ignited the RSL break and nearly handed Marczuk his second goal of the half. Angulo’s box score was modest, and he had less influence on the game than usual, with one key pass and one incomplete long-ball attempt. Although he completed 93.8% of his passes, he seemed hesitant to take on defenders on the dribble, often dropping the ball back, and his heat map is a blob just barely across the midfield line in the attacking half. Defensively, he chipped in three tackles.

MF, Luis Otavio, 5.5 — Otavio was part of the low energy first half of this match. He was not alone in this by any means as the Lions were not impressive as a whole. One of his more aggressive moments was an attempt to carry the ball up the middle of the pitch, only to be dispossessed by a clinical tackle from behind. Otavio completed a couple of long-ball attempts as well but contributed no other offensive or defensive statistics, while passing at 93.8%. Otavio has been improving as of late, but the first half needed a bit more from the midfielder, who was replaced at the half.

MF, Eduard Atuesta, 6.5 — The veteran midfielder appeared a step behind to start the match, providing an overcooked cross in the 14th minute, and getting a bit turned around in midfield in the 16th minute. He also made more than his fair share of bad passes while not under much pressure. He began to click though in the second half, and made his mark through some solid possession with his teammates, as well as his own direct contributions. He slid a through ball past Real Salt Lake’s defense for Griezmann who chipped the goalkeeper with a shot that hit the outside netting. Atuesta followed that up by finding Ellis off an RSL turnover, leading to Orlando’s first goal, on what would have been a secondary assist had Daryl Dike scored instead of Griezmann on the rebound. He sent in one incomplete cross, and connected on one out of three long balls. He was 90.8% accurate in his passing and defensively contributed one tackle and one blocked shot.

MF, Marco Pasalic, 5 — Pasalic wasn’t able to combine well on the night and seemed at times as if he may have been trying to do too much. He attempted two crosses, completing one, and connected on a long ball, passing with an 87.5% success rate. As the Lions did not attempt a shot in the first half, Pasalic did not have an attempt. The Croatian registered no defensive statistics. He checked out at halftime in the team’s triple substitution.

F, Antoine Griezmann, 8 (MotM) — The second half is doing a lot of lifting on this grade for Griezmann. His first half was not much better than most of the rest of the team. He was a little better than most on the team in the first half, but his touch eluded him at times, as evidenced by his 64.6% passing rate and rare lack of a key pass, and the minutes logged during a hot, wet August full of games every three days seemed to be taking its toll. But, he came alive in the second half, pouncing on rebound of Dike’s saved shot to put the first goal away for the Lions. For his second, he tried to back-heel Tyrese Spicer’s cutback into the middle, but it came off of Juan José Arias and fell right back to him to slot it into the bottom corner for the brace and the winning goal. Griezmann, and the attacking group executed some quality possession outside of the Real Salt Lake 18-yard box, for large stretches of the second half. It’s difficult to break down a low block but the Lions managed it twice, with Griezmann putting two past former Lions backup goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar. He put two of his five shots on target, but came agonizingly close to his hat trick with the chip attempt and a volley just over the bar both coming close. He completed three dribbles as well. Defensively, Griezmann provided a tackle and a clearance.

F, Tiago, 4.5 — Tiago continues to struggle to produce in the final third, getting into good spots before the play typically breaks down. Multiple promising attacks ended with a Tiago touch in this game, although he won a couple of set pieces. He registered three incomplete crosses, and one tackle, but he managed only eight touches in his 45 minutes, completing 87.5% of his passes before being subbed off for Ellis at the half.

Substitutes

F, Daryl Dike (45′), 6.5 — Dike came on for Pasalic at the half. The big forward drew attention away from Griezmann, helping to create space, and he brought down a difficult pass from Ellis and shot at goal, but Stajduhar made the save before Griezmann fired it into the net. The ball didn’t make it to him much, and he had to contend with being held a lot, but he made what he could out of his limited opportunities. Dike contributed one key pass, one incomplete cross, and took one shot that was on target. He completed 72.7% of his 11 pass attempts.

F, Justin Ellis (45′), 7.5 — Ellis came on for Tiago and was a major spark to the Lions’ offense. Once again, combining creatively with his teammates and dribbling through the RSL defense, Ellis brought the needed quality to put Salt Lake on the back foot. Offensively, he took two shots, though both were off target, made two key passes, completed three of four crosses, and attempted three long balls without completing one. His passing rate was good (83.3% on 30 attempts). Defensively, he recorded one clearance.

MF, Joran Gerbet (45′), 6.5 — Gerbet came on for Otavio at the half and was an important connecting piece, helping keep possession in the attacking half and found ways to progress the ball up the field where Otavio had previously curled back and recycled the attack. He brought energy to the midfield, which was much needed after the first half, and was part of the buildup for the first goal, picking up the loose ball off Jansson’s challenge at midfield. He had excellent passing stats for being generally in the middle of the pitch, with 97.6% accuracy on 42 passes. He completed one long ball and had no other offensive or defensive stats.

F, Tyrese Spicer (69′), 7 — Spicer came on for Taifi, and brought his typical supersub energy. He drove into the Real Salt Lake 18-yard box and cut the ball back toward the penalty spot, starting the sequence that ended with Griezmann’s game-winning goal, and he never let up after that. He forced a corner in the 84th minute and was active in pressing defensively, and while seeking attacking opportunities. He managed a shot, which was off target, and one cross that did not connect. He passed with 77.8% accuracy on his nine passes.

MF, Wilder Cartagena (85′), N/A — Cartagena came on for Atuesta late, and his job was to help see out the match. He did exactly that, cutting out a potentially dangerous cross from inside the box in the 88th minute and contributing two clearances. He only attempted 10 passes, but completed nine (90%) of them.

That’s how I saw the individual performances in a much-needed Orlando win. Let us know how you saw the game in the comments below, and don’t forget to vote for your Man of the Match.

Hello, Mane Landers! I hope all is well with you down in Florida. I’ve been busy at work, but I tried to watch a few soccer games over the weekend. Our Lions and Pride both won, while OCB’s winless skid continues. We’ve got plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.

Griezmann’s Late Winner Lifts Lions Past Real Salt Lake

Orlando City defeated Real Salt Lake 2-1 on Saturday at Inter.co Stadium on Antoine Griezmann’s second-half brace. The Lions trailed 1-0 at halftime, but Griezmann scored twice after the break to win it for Orlando, which snapped its four-match winless streak across all competitions. That result pulled the Lions just over the playoff line, moving them up to ninth in the Eastern Conference table with 24 points. Orlando City’s next match is on the road Saturday at Minnesota United.

Pride Beat Washington Spirit on the Road

The Orlando Pride beat the Washington Spirit 1-0 at Audi Field Sunday, snapping their three-match losing streak. Haley McCutcheon scored the lone goal early in the first half off an assist by Barbra Banda and Orlando held on for dear life for the win despite a dominating performance by the Spirit, who just couldn’t put any of their shots into the net. Pride goalkeeper Cosette Morche got the start over Anna Moorhouse and made a clutch save deep in stoppage time on Washington forward Paige Metayer’s free header to preserve the shutout. The Pride will play their next match at home against the Utah Royals on Saturday.

OCB Crushed 5-1 by Atlanta United 2

Orlando City traded first-half stoppage-time goals to enter halftime even at 1-1 on the road, but a terrible second half saw the Young Lions get blasted 5-1 by Atlanta United 2 on the road at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground in Marietta, GA, on Saturday. Atlanta struck first before Issah Haruna equalized for the Young Lions just before halftime. Cameron Dunbar scored his second goal of the match for Atlanta to start the second-half onslaught, and Arif Kovac scored a second-half brace. Atlanta won its second straight, while the Young Lions have lost five straight matches. OCB will be home for its next match on Sunday, taking on Crown Legacy FC at Osceola County Stadium.

Latest MLS Transfer Roundup

Forward Breel Embolo traveled to the United States on Friday to complete his transfer to Atlanta United, and the club unveiled him to fans during Sunday’s match against Sporting Kansas City.

The San Jose Earthquakes have reportedly reached an agreement with St. Louis City to sign midfielder Eduard Lowen.

The Seattle Sounders have reportedly reached an agreement with Sporting Kansas City to acquire forward Dejan Joveljic in exchange for $6 million in cash.

Lastly, D.C. United has transferred forward Jacob Murrell to Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership.

UEFA and Concacaf Reportedly Discussed Combined Nations League Tournament

UEFA and Concacaf have reportedly held talks on a combined Nations League tournament that could feature all 96 European, North and Central American, and Caribbean countries, directly challenging FIFA. The planned competition would be a biennial tournament and could start as soon as 2028. The proposed format would replace, rather than add to, existing international fixtures, and games would be played in geographical blocks to reduce travel. Both confederations are still seeking FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s removal and are reportedly working together to propose an alternative candidate to stand against him in the presidential election next March.
