Lion Links: 8/6/22
Happy match day, Mane Landers! It is sure to be a soccer-filled weekend as all three of our Orlando clubs have matches. We also welcome back the English Premier League, which I am personally excited for after having attended a London derby of West Ham at Tottenham in March. Am I a Spurs fan now? I’m not sure if I was officially converted, but my wife sure was after witnessing a stellar Son Heung-Min brace. The rest of European soccer is also back full tilt, so it makes sitting on the couch during these hot and humid weekends a bit more enjoyable. But now, let’s get to what you all came here for — the links!
Orlando City Returns to Exploria Stadium
Orlando City will be at home for the first time since the 5-1 routing of the New York Red Bulls in the semifinal of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. This match will be the second meeting of the regular season against the New England Revolution. The first match was played to a 1-1 draw in Gillette Stadium on June 15. New England will look slightly different this time time as two attackers have moved on during the summer transfer window. Sebastian Lletget and Jozy Altidore have both found new clubs; however, Head Coach Bruce Arena made a big move in bringing in forward Giacomo Vrioni. The 23-year-old striker enters MLS coming off a successful loan to WGS Tirol in the Austrian Bundesliga, where he had 19 goals in 28 league games. Earlier this season, Bruce Arena became the winningest coach in MLS history. Hopefully, he doesn’t add to that tally against the Lions. Tonight’s match is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
Orlando Pride In Rare Form
For the first time in club history, the Pride have finished out the month of July without a single loss. With three draws and a win, the club is unbeaten in its past four matches under Interim Head Coach Seb Hines. The Pride will host Angel City FC tomorrow night at 7 p.m. With just three points separating the two teams on the table, a win would jump Orlando into seventh place due to the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Orlando fans will see some familiar faces on the other side of the ball in Sydney Leroux and Claire Emslie. Leroux had been with the Pride since 2018 and playing in 63 games and scoring 18 goals across all competitions. Angel City also scooped up Emslie who was their second pick in the 2022 NWSL Expansion Draft. Emslie previously played for the Pride in 2019.
While most fans will surely be there to watch some soccer, Exploria Stadium will also be themed around the Pride’s Y2K Night for those looking to enjoy the full night of festivities. Supporters are encouraged to sport their Pride gear in some of their favorite 2000s fashion trends. In addition, there will be a Britney Spears impersonator and special 2000s halftime karaoke show.
Orlando City Transfer Grade
According to MLSsoccer.com, Orlando City’s use of the summer transfer window would be considered a loss. Orlando was praised for adding depth and refreshing competition in numerous positional groups. USMNT forward Nicholas Gioacchini was signed on a free transfer from France’s SM Caen and can play center forward or on the wing. Ivan Angulo also adds further options in the attack after the 23-year-old Colombian youth international winger arrives on loan. Orlando rounded out the window by adding Wilder Cartagena, a Peruvian international and central midfielder to add depth behind César Araújo.
While only losing Sebas Mendez and Silvester van der Water, it seems most of the transfers were to replace or try and upgrade these two positions rather than adding to positions that are clearly already thin. Matt Doyle gives his reasoning for a loss as criticism in not dealing with Orlando’s need of depth at left back and center back.
Former Lion Returns to MLS
Former Orlando City winger Richie Laryea will be returning to MLS and Toronto FC. He rejoins on loan from English Premier League side Nottingham Forrest through the summer of 2023. Laryea originally joined Toronto in 2019 after playing for Orlando City. While in Toronto, he found himself being used more defensively than ever before and became one of the best wingbacks in the league.
“It’s great to bring Richie back to the club,” Toronto head coach and sporting director Bob Bradley said in a release. “As everyone knows by now, Richie established himself as one of the best outside backs in the league. He’s a dynamic player, a fantastic dribbler, and a real competitor. To have Richie back in his hometown to play for TFC ahead of Canada’s trip to the World Cup is exciting.”
Following his time with Toronto, he was transferred to Nottingham Forest this past January for a reported $1 million fee. He helped them earn promotion from the Championship, though he played in only five matches.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to be back with TFC and play in front of our fans at BMO Field,” said Laryea. “I know it’s an important time for the club as we push for the playoffs, and I want to help the team achieve success.”

Orlando City reportedly close to a signing, Orlando Pride international call-ups, Pride’s off-season grade (so far), and more.
Welcome to Wednesday, Mane Landers! Our midweek news is a little bit brighter than it has been in the recent past. Also, there is news, which is nice after a long off-season. Orlando City’s first regular-season match is Saturday and The Mane Land will be back in full swing. We’re happy to be back and look forward to having you read our stuff and listen to The Mane Land PawedCast. Let’s get to the links.
New Lions Signing Reportedly Imminent
We’re still waiting on an announcement from the club, but Tom Bogert is reporting that Orlando City has acquired Houston Dynamo wingback Griffin Dorsey to start at right back for the Lions. While not a huge signing, this is welcome news for a position group that was lacking after the departures of Alex Freeman, Dagur Dan Thorhallsson, and Kyle Smith. Dorsey was a regular starter for the Dynamo, meaning he has plenty of MLS experience.
Pride International Call-Ups
The Orlando Pride might not have any USWNT players, but there are still international call-ups happening. Anna Moorhouse once again received the call from the England Women’s National Team. The Lionesses will play qualifiers against Ukraine and Iceland.
Moorhouse wasn’t alone as Solai Washington will represent the Jamaica Women’s National Team. The Pride signed Washington out of FSU last month. Jamaica will play Nicaragua in a Concacaf W Qualifiers match.
Average Grade for Orlando Pride
It’s been quite a while since we’ve gotten any signing news on the Pride side of things, and that hasn’t changed. I won’t tell you my grade for this off-season yet. You can submit that as a question for the next SkoPurp Soccer: An Orlando Pride Podcast if you want to know. I can share that Merritt Mathias gave it a C.
MLS Season Approaches
The fact that not one single regular-season match has been played won’t stop MLSsoccer.com from putting out a Power Rankings list. Spoiler alert: Orlando City isn’t at the top of the list. The site also put out a list of the 10 biggest newcomers to MLS. Orlando City’s Iago got an honorable mention, so I guess that’s something. There’s also the list for 11 players to watch. This list has players already familiar with the league playing for new clubs. Orlando City’s new keeper, Maxime Crepeau is one of those players mentioned.

Predictions for the 2026 MLS season, UEFA Champions League returns, transfer rumor roundup, and more.
It feels a little strange to be saying this after what feels like a couple minutes since the end of last season, but happy match week everyone! The Lions are set to take on the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, and hopefully the final preseason match was simply Orlando City’s time to get out all of the mistakes when the games don’t matter. We’ve got plenty to discuss this morning, so let’s get into the links.
MLS Preseason Predictions
With the 2026 MLS season due to get underway this weekend, now is a good time to make predictions on how the various teams will fare this year. When it comes to Orlando City, a lot of the on-air talent at Apple TV who cover the league don’t seem particularly positive about the Lions’ chances. The general consensus has the Lions finishing the year at ninth in the Eastern Conference, although a couple individuals have them sinking as low as 12th, and Max Bretos has the good guys as high as third. Inter Miami and LAFC are the picks to win their respective conferences, while CF Montreal and Sporting Kansas City occupy the cellar spots.
UEFA Champions League Preview
The UEFA Champions League is back this week as the play-off round kicks off later today. The Tuesday slate of games is highlighted by Benfica hosting Real Madrid in a rematch of the dramatic game on matchday eight that saw the Portuguese outfit sneak into the knockout round with a last-minute goal. The match between Weston McKennie’s Juventus team and Galatasaray should also be a great spectacle, and the Istanbul outfit’s intimidating atmosphere could make the difference against the Italian side. Wednesday sees Bodo/Glimt host Inter Milan in its frozen home above the Arctic Circle, while Club Brugge will try to use its own home-field advantage to grab a result against Atletico Madrid.
Transfer Rumor Roundup
The winter transfer window might be over for European teams, but that isn’t stopping the transfer rumors from continuing to fly. We start with Manchester United, as the Red Devils are reportedly eyeing up a move to sign Alexis Mac Allister from Liverpool this summer to help solve some of their midfield struggles. Meanwhile, Brighton and Hove Albion is said to have made another offer to sign promising young winger Said El Lama from FC Koln, despite the German team’s reluctance to sell him. Elsewhere in England, Chelsea and Tottenham are both reportedly interested in signing Bayern Munich center back Kim Min-Jae. Finally, Tom Bogert says St. Louis City is close to signing forward Sergio Cordova on loan from BSC Young Boys.
FA Cup Fifth Round Draw
The draw has been completed for the fifth round of the FA Cup, and it’s thrown up some intriguing matchups. The one that’s grabbed a lot of the headlines is Wrexham hosting Chelsea at the Racecourse Ground after making it to the round of 16 for the first time in 29 years. Newcastle United will host Manchester City in another big clash, while West Ham United will take on a Brentford side that was given a real scare by National League side Macclesfield Town on Monday in a 1-0 win that took an own goal to send the Bees through. League One side Mansfield Town has been given a tortuously tough test in Arsenal, but the lower division outfit does have the benefit of playing the match at home.

Lions fall to Rapids in final preseason match, Pride release preseason schedule, MLS transfer news, and more.
Hello, Mane Landers, and happy President’s Day! I hope all is well with you down in Florida over the holiday weekend. I’ve been busy covering high school playoff basketball and hockey over the past week. Orlando City’s home opener is Saturday, and like many of you, I look forward to seeing what the Lions can do during the 2026 MLS season. We’ve got plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.
Lions Fall to Rapids in Final Preseason Match
In its final preseason match, Orlando City fell 4-1 to the Colorado Rapids Saturday at Inter&Co Stadium. The Lions trailed 2-0 at halftime before Eduard Atuesta curled his shot around the wall and into the back of the net to make it 2-1 in the second half. The Rapids quickly responded with a goal from Darren Yapi extend their lead to 3-1. Lucas Herrington scored the final goal of the night for Colorado to seal the victory on the road. Orlando City finishes its preseason and the 2026 MLS season will kick off this weekend as the Lions host the Red Bulls on Saturday night.
Orlando Pride Release Preseason Schedule
The Orlando Pride dropped their preseason schedule Friday, and all matches will be closed-door scrimmages. The Pride have one preseason match in the books, a recent scrimmage against the Washington Spirit Friday, the day they dropped their schedule, but they did not provide information about it, as has become the team’s custom. The club shared some photos of the match on social media.
The Pride’s upcoming preseason matches are Friday against Racing Louisville, Sunday against the University of Florida, and March 1 against NJ/NY Gotham FC.
Orlando Pride Announce Preseason Fan Events
The Orlando Pride unveiled the list of events ahead of the 2026 season Saturday. Many of the events offer fans opportunities to engage with the team ahead of the Pride’s home opener on March 15 against the Seattle Reign at Inter&Co Stadium. The first event is Tuesday with Pour Overs With Pride at Qreate Coffee Creative Village, where fans can interact with Simone Jackson and Nicole Payne as baristas.
