Happy Tuesday, everyone. As usual, there’s a whole treasure trove of things to discuss today. Before we do though, if you’re in the path of Hurricane Ian, please make sure you’re making proper preparations, or evacuating if you’re like me and live in Tampa. This thing looks like it’ll be no joke, and we need all our loyal readers to stay safe and above water. Now, lets get into today’s links.
USMNT Braces for Saudi Arabia Match-Up
The United States Men’s National Team will take on Saudi Arabia today at 2 p.m. in its final tune-up game before the 2022 World Cup, and there’s plenty of content to help get you ready for the match. Our friends over at Stars and Stripes FC have you covered with lineup and score predictions, as well as a few things to watch for against unfamiliar opponents. Gregg Berhalter has also promised that fans will see a far different level of intensity than what was on display last Friday, which would certainly be welcome after the performance in a dismal 2-0 defeat to Japan in Dusseldorf. Finally, the man in charge of the Yanks confirmed yesterday that both Christian Pulisic and Ricardo Pepi will start today’s game.

UEFA Nations League Roundup
There was plenty of action in the UEFA Nations League Monday. Most noteworthy was Italy dispatching Hungary, 2-0, to book a spot in the final four of the competition, with goals coming from Giacomo Raspadori and Federico Dimarco. The wildest game of the day, however, took place between England and Germany, with the two sides playing to a thrilling 3-3 draw that saw five of the six goals scored in a frantic 20-minute period during the second half. The Three Lions erased a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead with just seven minutes remaining plus stoppage time, but a Kai Havertz strike in the 87th minute means that England now hasn’t won in its last six games. The nature of the English performance quieted some voices that were growing louder and louder in criticism of Gareth Southgate, but there’s still plenty of pressure ahead of November.
Slim Pickings After Gareth Southgate
Speaking of Southgate, while the masses haven’t been wholeheartedly calling for his head just yet, there have been plenty of doubts voiced about whether he’s the right man for the job, with critics mainly pointing to England’s difficulty scoring from open play, despite boasting an array of attacking talent. The problem with firing him though, is who do you bring in to replace him? Many had been looking towards Graham Potter, but he just took the reins at Chelsea and theoretically won’t be leaving anytime soon. The same can be said for Eddie Howe at Newcastle, and the English FA’s preference for hiring an English manager dilutes the talent pool quite a bit, which means that Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard may be two of the most likely names to be in the post whenever Southgate does leave it.
Watford Appoints Slaven Bilic
It seems like the only team that goes through managers faster than Chelsea is Watford, and Rob Edwards is the latest name to bite the dust at Vicarage Road. In his place comes Slaven Bilic, who has managed West Ham and West Brom in the past, and most recently spent time coaching in China. Bilic comes in on an 18-month contract but the odds of him being in charge for that long can’t be very high. Since Sean Dyche left in July 2012, only two managers have been in charge for more than 50 games — Gianfranco Zola and Javi Gracia. On the other hand, nine hires have been in charge for fewer than 30 games, and the revolving door has been more like a carousel that’s been injected with nitrous oxide.

Leagues Cup preview, Americans in midweek action, open letter addressing Gianni Infantino, and more.
Good morning, everyone. It wasn’t a particularly pleasant weekend for Orlando’s soccer teams, but fortunately, opportunities to change the vibes are right around the corner. Orlando City B plays NYCFC II in a few hours, Orlando City plays San Luis tomorrow and FC Cincinnati on Saturday, and the Orlando Pride are in action against the Portland Thorns on Saturday night as well. We’ve got lots to talk over this morning, so let’s get into it.
Leagues Cup Preview
Leagues Cup will begin its final round of group stage games later today, and there are several storylines to keep an eye on. Most prominent among them is the match between Austin FC and Club America, as each team currently sits first in its respective table. Myrto Uzuni’s hat trick helped Austin bury Puebla in its second match, and the Verde and Black are now in great position to advance. Before we get to that match on Thursday though, FC Cincinnati plays Atlas this evening to kick off the last round of games. Cincy sits fourth in the MLS table and therefore has plenty to play for, while Atlas has no points and has already been eliminated from contention. With Cincy visiting the City Beautiful on Saturday, Orlando fans should be hoping for FCC’s key players to rack up a lot of minutes tonight.
Americans in Midweek Action
Plenty of Americans will be taking part in matches during the working week, so make sure you’ve got everything noted down on your calendar. Tanner Tessmann and Lyon kick things off later today as they try to overturn a 2-1 first leg deficit against Sparta Prague in UEFA Champions Leauge qualifying. Things continue with Brenden Aaronson and Leeds playing Manchester United in a friendly on Wednesday, while Malik Tillman and Bayer Leverkusen have a friendly of their own against Nottingham Forest. Things wrap up with some American-on-American violence on Friday, as Johnny Cardoso and Atletico Madrid play Marseille in a friendly, while Folarin Balogun and Monaco face Haji Wright and Coventry in a tune-up game.
Confederations Write Letter Criticizing Gianni Infantino
Concacaf, UEFA, and AFC have written a joint open letter soccer as a whole, in which they accuse FIFA president Gianni Infantino of betraying the trust of the confederations and engaging in deceptive practices. They condemned the plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, and called both FIFA’s integrity and Infantino’s running of the organization into question. U.S. Soccer put out its own statement on Sunday in support of Concacaf’s stance. The letter also urged FIFA to conduct an independent review of the proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup, while calling for accountability and openness among Infantino and the rest of FIFA’s leadership.
Transfer Rumor Roundup
There are plenty of transfer rumors to catch up on this morning, so let’s get straight into it. We start in England, where Crystal Palace is reportedly finalizing the signing of Zavier Gozo from Real Salt Lake. In Spain, Atletico Madrid has reportedly submitted an offer in the area of €35 million to Lille for winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo. Meanwhile, Endrick will supposedly be staying at Real Madrid this season following discussions between himself, the club, and Head Coach Jose Mourinho. Barcelona ha reportedly rejected a €50 million offer for Ferran Torres from Paris Saint-Germain, as the Catalonian club wants the fee to be structured differently than PSG’s initial proposal. Finally, in a rather unexpected bit of news, Tom Bogert reports that CF Montreal is signing Alexis Sanchez as a Designated Player.

The Orlando Pride fell 3-1 to Racing Louisville FC at home on Friday as the club continues to slide down the NWSL table and has lost back-to-back league matches. Atlanta United has acquired midfielder Mauricio Amaro from Uruguayan top flight club Defensor Sporting. Amaro will be under contract through the 2028-2029 season with an option for 2029-2030. Braian Ojeda undergoes foot surgery, Orlando Pride play Racing Louisville tonight, NWSL midseason predictions, and more.
Happy Friday, Mane Landers! I’m hesitant to get excited about back-to-back days of Orlando soccer considering how last weekend went, but we have the Orlando Pride in action tonight and Orlando City playing Saturday in a pair of home games. Keep every finger crossed, folks. But for now, let’s get to the links!
Braian Ojeda Undergoes Foot Surgery
Orlando City announced that midfielder Braian Ojeda underwent successful surgery to repair a Jones fracture in his right foot. It’s the same foot injury that Robin Jansson dealt with earlier this year and Ojeda is expected to return in the fall. The Lions traded for Ojeda in January and he has started in 21 games across all competitions this year, recording a goal and six assists. He also represented Paraguay at the World Cup this summer and played in the match against Germany in the round of 32.
Orlando Pride Host Racing Louisville Tonight
The Orlando Pride are coming off of a disastrous 5-0 defeat on the road against the North Carolina Courage and will look to bounce back tonight when they host Racing Louisville. Although Louisville has only won four games this season, two of those victories have come in their past three games and one was at the Pride’s expense. We’ll see if Orlando’s offense will be able to make some noise against a Louisville defense that has conceded a league-high 34 goals this season. Orlando Pride Head Coach Seb Hines spoke on the need for a result tonight at home.
“When we come home and we play in front of our fans, we need to put a show on and we need to really bounce back from a disappointing result against North Carolina,” Hines said. “We let ourselves down, we let the fans down, and we need to respond in the best way and that’s by getting three points this Friday.”
NWSL Midseason Predictions
We’ve reached the second half of the NWSL season and it’s a nice time to take a look at the various award races across the league. While Barbra Banda being away at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has opened the door for other forwards to make up ground in the Golden Boot race, her absence has at least proven just how valuable she is to her team amid the Pride’s free fall without her. It doesn’t hurt her case for MVP, though she faces stiff competition from Temwa Chawinga, Trinity Rodman, and Mina Tanaka. The Pride likely don’t have any contenders for the other awards given how the season has gone, but anything can happen.
Keeping Up With the Americans Abroad
As we near the return of European soccer, there are plenty of Americans with new teams to keep an eye out for this year. ESPN graded some of the moves by Yanks this summer, with Max Arfsten and Sebastian Berhalter’s moves from MLS to Middlesbrough receiving decent marks. It’ll be interesting to see how Giovanni Reyna does now that he’s in Strasbourg, and we’ll see if goalkeeper Diego Kochen can make an impact with Lyngby Boldklub in Denmark. La Liga starts next weekend, which means we’ll be able to watch Alex Freeman with Villarreal after his strong World Cup performance.
