2023 NWSL Championship preview, Kerolin named NWSL MVP, MLS expansion club breaks ground, and more.
Happy Saturday, Mane Landers. I started my weekend a little early with a round of golf yesterday, putting the Christmas tree and decorations up with my wife, and relaxing with a movie on the couch. We have a few more decorations to get up today, but for the most part there will be plenty of time to catch some soccer action around the globe on television. She has already called dibs on the TV for the NWSL Championship tonight, so we’ll definitely be tuning in to that. More on that match and everything else down below in today’s links.
2023 NWSL Championship Preview
Snapdragon Stadium will be the ninth different venue to host an NWSL Championship when OL Reign clashes with Gotham FC tonight at 8 p.m. While both clubs want to raise a major trophy, the biggest storylines surround two of the women’s game’s great players finishing their careers following the match. Gotham’s Ali Krieger is coming off one of her best club seasons and OL Reign’s Megan Rapinoe is looking to stamp a successful career. The two long-time friends and former USWNT teammates are looking forward to sharing this special moment and final match together.
“It’s really special, to be honest,” said Rapinoe about playing Krieger in the final. “I mean obviously only one of us is going to be able to win and that’s going to be sad for whoever the person is that doesn’t win. But it’s really special to share the length of career that we have [had]. I know if I win, she’ll be happy for me; if she wins, I’ll be thrilled for her.”
Kerolin Named 2023 NWSL Most Valuable Player
Brazilian forward Kerolin of the North Carolina Courage has been named the 2023 NWSL Most Valuable Player. She is the first South American-born player and the fourth international player to win the award.Β In her season, Kerolin recorded a career-high 10 goals and three assists in 19 regular-season games.
San Diego FC Breaks Ground
In 2025, MLS is set to add its 30th club in San Diego FC. The club has now officially broken ground on its training facility that will also house its Right to Dream Youth Development Academy. The Right to Dream Academy San Diego is a major part of the clubβs 125,000-square-foot campus, which boasts a 50,000-square-foot sports performance facility shared by the first team and academy teams. It will have five full-sized soccer fields, including three natural turf fields and two synthetic turf fields. The residential academy will house male students between the ages of 12 through 18 across sixth through 12th grade. The first group of residential athletes will be enrolled in fall 2025. Additionally, San Diego FC will create a non-residential girls pathway at the academy.
βThis is a foundational moment for our club. Our performance center and Right to Dream Academy will enable us to develop future generations of world-class players across greater San Diego. This groundbreaking initiative reaffirms our commitment to create opportunities for young talent to flourish and our vision to become the epicenter of football excellence and innovation in North America,” said Tom Penn, CEO of San Diego FC.
Emma Hayes Announces Farewell Season
The speculation of Chelsea manager Emma Hayes leaving her club for the United States Women’s National Team seems to be confirmed after she has said the “time is right” to leave the club after 12 years in charge of the six-time Women’s Super League champions. Previous sources have confirmed that Hayes’ contract will be a record for women’s football and of equal to that of USMNT Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. Hayes hasn’t confirmed her link to the vacant USWNT managerial post quite yet and reiterated her work still to be done at Chelsea for the time being.
“I’ve got a team to focus on; I’ve got games to win,” she said. “The time is right. I will work with the club in the succession plan and do everything I can to make sure there is as good of a transition as possible so my successor can have the same level of success as I can.”
Darren Powell Lands USL One Head Coaching Job
Former Orlando City Soccer Club Academy Director Darren Powell is set to join USL League One side Lexington Sporting Club entering the team’s second season. Powell was with Orlando from 2014-2016 before heading to San Antonio FC and later Fort Lauderdale CF and the Inter Miami organization.
βWe are really excited to be in Lexington and looking forward to meeting with the players. We have been meeting with the staff and getting to know them, and everyone has been super welcoming. Soon, we can meet with the fans and engage with the supporters that seem very passionate about Lexington soccer and obviously want to grow that support during the coming months. Very grateful for the fans we have and the support weβve been given and looking forward to meeting them.β

Orlando City opens preseason training, Orlando City B signs a striker, MLS transfer news, and more.
Good morning, everyone! As strange (and soon) as it seems, we’ve now got day one of Orlando City’s preseason in the rearview mirror. The season opener will be here before we know it, but for now we’ve got a lot of things to talk through today. Let’s wish a happy birthday to OCSC goalkeeping coach Cesar Baena, and get started on today’s links!
Orlando City Begins Preseason Training
Things looked a little different than they did the last few years when Orlando City opened preseason training on Monday. The new faces include Maxime Crepeau, Braian Ojeda, and Tiago, but the team is more than ready to get to work despite the off-season changes. Oscar Pareja says the club has high expectations for the year and took a moment to acknowledge all the people at the club who helped make the Lions into a playoff staple over the last six seasons, saying, “We’re ready to keep pushing with this journey, and it looks different, for sure, because we have had those players who have been here for many years and have brought a long, big, big history here. So again, our respect to them, and we promise that we will keep pushing together, because the most important thing is the team.” Of the new signings, Luis Otavio was the only one not present at Monday’s training, while several Orlando City B players were training with the first team, with Justin Ellis, Titus Sandy Jr., and Juan Rojas among them.
OCB Adds Brazilian Striker
Not to be outshone by the senior side, Orlando City B got the week started on a strong note by announcing the signing of striker Pedro Leao from Flamengo’s U-20 team. Leao came up through Flamengo’s academy before making his debut for the U-20 team in August of 2024. He then proceeded to score 20 goals and provide six assists in over 3,000 minutes for the U-20 side, and helped it win the 2024-2025 iteration of the U-20 Intercontinental Cup. The striker was also called up three times to represent Brazil’s U-16 side, logging three assists across those friendly matches. Welcome to Orlando!
MLS Transfer Moves
With the beginning of the Major League Soccer season creeping closer and closer, teams are completing transfer business in every direction you look. We start with FC Cincinnati, which has signed free agent forward Tom Barlow on a contract that runs through the end of 2027. Continuing the theme of free agent signings, the New York Red Bulls have signed defender Robert Voloder, with the former Sporting Kansas City player joining on a deal that runs through the end of 2028. The Houston Dynamo signed midfielder Agustin Bouzat from Velez Sarsfield on a deal that runs through June 2028 and has an option through June 2029. Up north, 38-year-old Maxi Moralez is back yet again for New York City FC, as he has signed a new contract that runs through the 2026 season. Finally, the San Jose Earthquakes are said to be closing in on a deal to sign Timo Werner as a Designated Player.
Americans in Midweek Action
As usual, a number of American players will be in action during the working week, so let’s take a look at some of the matchups. Things get going today when Malik Tillman and Bayer Leverkusen travel to Hamburger SV in Bundesliga action. Gio Reyna, Joe Scally, and Borussia Monchengladbach hit the road to take on Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Wednesday, while Kevin Paredes and Wolfsburg host James Sands’ St. Pauli side in the same competition. Thursday has Christian Pulisic and AC Milan in a road tilt against Como in Serie A play, and the week finishes up Friday with Folarin Balogun and Monaco squaring off against Lorient in Ligue 1.

Pride trade Emily Sams to Angel City, MLS transfer news, FA Cup roundup, and more.
Hello, Mane Landers! I hope all is well with you down in Florida. I’ve been busy at work, covering high school bowling and playing video games such as EA FC 26. We’ve got plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.
Pride Trade Emily Sams to Angel City FC
The Orlando Pride announced Friday that the club has traded 2024 NWSL Defender of the Year Emily Sams to Angel City FC. In exchange, the Pride received a club-record $650,000 in intraleague transfer funds. Sams had requested a trade and departs Orlando after three seasons with the club. The Pride had given Sams a contract extension 11 months ago through the 2027 NWSL season. She made 86 appearances for the Pride across all competitions, scored one goal and added two assists, and played a crucial role on the back line to help Orlando secure both the NWSL Shield and the NWSL Championship during the 2024 season. Sams also earned seven caps with the U.S. Women’s National Team. Orlando will now need to focus on finding a replacement at center back.
MLS Transfer News Roundup
We’ve got plenty of MLS moves to catch you up on from the last few days. Nashville SC announced Friday the club has signed former San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Cristian Espinoza to a Designated Player contract through 2028 with options through 2028-2029 and 2029-2030. The Earthquakes have signed Cristian “Chicho” Arango to a new contract through 2027, with club options for the 2027-2028 and 2028-2029 season. Austin FC has reached an agreement with midfielder Dani Pereira on a contract extension through 2027-2028 with an option for 2028-2029. D.C. United announced the transfer of midfielder Boris Enow to Israeli Premier League side Beitar Jerusalem. San Diego FC has acquired Osvald Soe from Danish Second Division side Boldklubben af 1893. Soe is under contract through the 2027-2028 MLS season with options through 2029-2030. Meanwhile, Hirving “Chucky” Lozano is reportedly not in San Diego FC’s plans for the upcoming 2026 MLS season. Lastly, Toronto FC has reportedly submitted a transfer bid to Norwich City for forward Josh Sargent.
Third Round FA Cup Recap
There was plenty of drama and some notable upsets in the third round of the FA Cup. On Friday, Wrexham knocked out Premier League side Nottingham Forest 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw. On Saturday, Macclesfield FC, which plays in the sixth tier of English football, defeated defending FA Cup champion Crystal Palace 2-1 in one of the biggest upsets of the weekend. Manchester City demolished Exeter City 10-1, while Tottenham Hotspur fell 2-1 to Aston Villa. On Sunday, former Lion Daryl Dike played 60 minutes as West Bromwich Albion defeated Swansea City 6-5 on penalties after a 2-2 draw to move on to the fourth round. Brighton & Hove Albion beat Manchester United 2-1, and Gabriel Martinelli scored a hat trick as Arsenal cruised to a 4-1 victory against Portsmouth. Today, Liverpool hosts Barnsley, and Salford City takes on Swindon Town Tuesday to conclude the third round of the FA Cup.
2025 Africa Cup of Nations Quarterfinals Results
The quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations concluded in Morocco, with four teams booking their spots in the semifinals. On Friday, Senegal edged Mali 1-0, with Iliman Ndiaye scoring the lone goal for Senegal to advance. Host Morocco shut out Cameroon 2-0 to advance to the semifinals. Egypt held on for a 3-2 win against Ivory Coast to eliminate the defending champions. Mohamed Salah scored a goal and added an assist as Egypt booked its spot in the semifinals with the win. The semifinals will kick off on Wednesday with Senegal facing Egypt and Morocco taking on Nigeria.

Nico Rodriguez loaned out, Orlando City preseason schedule released, Orlando Pride trade for a defender, and much more.
Happy Friday, Mane Landers! It’s been a pretty busy week, but we have a weekend of what is hopefully some rest and relaxation to look forward to. I don’t have many plans beyond some deep cleaning of my apartment, but it should still be a nice couple of days. Let’s jump right into today’s links from around the soccer world!
Nico Rodriguez Loaned to Atletico Nacional
Orlando City loaned winger Nicolas Rodiriguez to Atletico Nacional in Colombia through 2026, with an option to buy as part of the deal. The Lions added him as an MLS U22 Initiative Player in January of last year, signing him to a three-year deal. He recorded a goal and an assist in 17 appearances across all competitions for Orlando, starting in just four games. This loan notably frees up an MLS U22 Initiative slot for the Lions to make use of, while also giving Rodriguez an opportunity for more minutes to hone his game.
Orlando City Announces Preseason Schedule
Orlando unveiled its schedule for this year’s preseason and training will begin on Jan. 12. There will be a closed-door scrimmage against the USL Championship’s Lexington Sporting Club on Jan. 24 before the team heads to Mexico for a training camp from Jan. 25 to the end of the month. The Lions will then play two more closed-door friendlies once they return, playing at Nashville SC on Feb. 7 and at FC Cincinnati on Feb. 11. Orlando’s final preseason game will be on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, when the Lions take on the Colorado Rapids in a match exclusively open to season ticket members, who will receive an email to RSVP for it.
Orlando Pride Acquire Defender Hannah Anderson
The Orlando Pride traded for defender Hannah Anderson, sending $70,000 in intraleague funds to the Chicago Stars in exchange. Anderson joins the Pride on a contract through 2027. Drafted in the third round of the 2024 NWSL Draft, Anderson has made 28 appearances across the past two seasons in Chicago. Hopefully she can add some solid depth to a Pride defense that has been formidable in recent years but has been tested by injuries.
Orlando Pride and Grace Chanda Part Ways
The Orlando Pride and Zambian midfielder Grace Chanda have mutually agreed to part ways, allowing her to sign with FC Gallos Queretaro in Mexico. The Pride signed Chanda to a two-year deal back in May of 2024 and exercised the 2026 option on her contract last summer. Injury prevented her from playing for the Pride in 2024, and she only made seven total appearances across all competitions in 2025. It’s unfortunate she wasn’t able to become a starter for a Pride team that could’ve used a creative force in the midfield at times last year, but hopefully she’ll be able to get more playing time with Queretaro.
USWNT January Roster Announced
United States Women’s National Team Head Coach Emma Hayes called up 26 players for training camp this month, including Pride defender Emily Sams. It’s a fairly inexperienced roster in terms of minutes with the USWNT, and four players were called up for the first time. Trinity Rodman, who is out of contract, is technically the only player called up not currently on an NWSL team. It will be Rodman’s first time at a USWNT training camp since April, as injuries limited her throughout 2025. The USWNT will play Paraguay on Jan. 24 and Chile on Jan. 27 in a pair of friendlies in California to conclude the camp.
Camping World Stadium Will Host Friendlies
A pair of international friendlies will be held at Camping World Stadium as World Cup teams set up their preparations for this year’s tournament. Colombia and Croatia will clash in the City Beautiful on March 26 before Croatia plays against Brazil on March 31. Tickets for the matches are scheduled to go on sale on Tuesday. According to Florida Citrus Sports CEO Steve Hogan, construction may prevent Camping World Stadium from hosting other international friendlies before the World Cup.

- Atlanta United transferred midfielder Bartosz Slisz to Brondby IF in Denmark for a reported $3.5 million transfer fee.
- Alejandro Bedoya signed a new contract with the Philadelphia Union through 2026. The 38-year-old will continue his front office role with the club as well.
- Hector Herrera will reportedly return to the Houston Dynamo, although he won’t be a Designated Player. Every referee should be offered face shields in case he gets a little testy again.
- Minnesota United Head Coach Eric Ramsay will reportedly become West Brom’s next manager. He’s done well with the Loons over the past two seasons, and hopefully Daryl Dike thrives under him.
