Orlando City vs. New England Revolution: Preview, How to Watch, TV Info, Live Stream, Lineups, Match Thread, and More
The Lions continue to hunt their first win at Gillette Stadium against a surging Revolution squad.
Welcome to your match thread for a Saturday night matchup between Orlando City and the New England Revolution (7:30 p.m., MLS Season Pass on Apple TV+ (free)). This is the first of the two scheduled meetings between the two MLS Eastern Conference rivals this season, with the Revs set to make the return visit to Inter&Co Stadium on Sept. 14.
Here’s what you need to know for the match.
History
The Lions are 3-7-7 in the regular-season series against New England and 4-8-7 in all competitions. However, on the road Orlando City has been abysmal, compiling an ugly record of 0-6-2 in eight away matches on the plastic grass of Gillette Stadium. Woof (both to the record and to playing on fake grass).
The last meeting between the teams took place in Orlando on Oct. 7, 2023, with the Lions winning 3-2 in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicates. Orlando City clinched second in the Eastern Conference as Duncan McGuire and Facundo Torres built a 2-0 lead. Pedro Gallese gave up a soft goal from distance to Carles Gil, but Ivan Angulo pulled that one back three minutes later. Gil added a second deep in stoppage time to improve the result cosmetically.
New England got the better of the Lions in the previous matchup of the 2023 season, winning 3-1 at Gillette Stadium on June 17. After a scoreless first half, the Revs went up by two with goals from Emmanuel Boateng and Gustavo Bou 18 minutes apart. McGuire pulled one back late but Gil scored the dagger five minutes later.
These teams met at Exploria Stadium on Aug. 6, 2022 and the previously struggling Revolution whipped Orlando City, 3-0. New England got goals from unlikely sources, as central midfielders Matt Polster and Wilfrid Kaptoum and center back Henry Kessler provided the offense. The teams met at Gillette Stadium on June 15 of that year, and the Revs went ahead on a Gil goal, but the Lions pulled that back with a Robin Jansson strike en route to a 1-1 road draw.
New England went unbeaten in the 2021 season series. The teams played to a 2-2 draw at Exploria Stadium on Oct. 24, 2021. The Lions built a 2-0 lead through goals by Nani and Daryl Dike, but two late Adam Buksa goals allowed the Revs to steal a point. The teams met at Gillette Stadium just over a month prior to that draw in Orlando, with Nani’s missed penalty a costly one in a 2-1 Revs home win. The Revolution jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a goal by Buksa and an own goal off of Rodrigo Schlegel, in which the referee was quite lenient with Buksa’s treatment of the Orlando defender in the lead-up to Tajon Buchanan’s cross. Dike pulled one back for the Lions and won a penalty, but Nani’s attempt to go down the middle was read at the last second by Matt Turner, who got his shoulder to it to preserve the lead.
The Revolution ended the Lions’ season at Exploria Stadium in the 2020 playoffs, knocking Orlando City out of MLS Cup contention in the conference semifinal round on Nov. 29, 2020. That 3-1 win by the Revs was the first road win for either side in the series in any competition. Gil put the Revs up early from the penalty spot after a call against Uri Rosell, and Bou doubled the lead eight minutes later, finishing a play that started with a Nani turnover. Junior Urso pulled a goal back before the halftime whistle, but Mauricio Pereyra was sent off for a studs-up challenge on Polster at the hour mark. Still, Nani had a chance to equalize from the spot, but a poor penalty was saved by Turner. Bou added a late insurance goal.
In the final year of the pre-pandemic times, the Revs went 1-0-1 in the season series. The Lions and Revolution met at Exploria Stadium on Sept. 14, 2019, with Orlando overcoming a Tesho Akindele own goal and two deficits — the second by two goals — and rallying for a 3-3 draw. Akindele’s own goal opened the scoring 15 minutes in, but Nani tied things up less than 10 minutes later. Cristian Penilla and Bou scored goals five minutes apart just before halftime to seemingly give the visitors control. But Dom Dwyer pulled one back after the restart and Nani tied it up with more than a half hour to play.
The teams also met at Gillette Stadium in 2019 on July 27, and the Revs put the Lions on full blast, 4-1. Bou scored within the first two minutes of the game, and the Revolution got goals from Penilla, Gil, and Diego Fagundez. Akindele scored to avoid the shutout.
The teams also met at Exploria Stadium in U.S. Open Cup action that year on June 19, with the Lions scoring twice in a 30-minute extra time session and holding on for a 2-1 victory. Benji Michel and Akindele staked Orlando to a 2-0 lead before Justin Rennicks pulled one back off a Gil back-post cross. City was able to see the game out.
The last meeting of 2018 saw the Revs top a depleted Orlando side, 2-0 in Gillette Stadium on Oct. 13. Penilla and Fagundez provided the offense. In the first matchup of 2018, the teams combined for six goals in a 3-3 draw at Orlando City Stadium on Aug. 4. Orlando battled back from a 2-0 deficit after Juan Agudelo and Penilla found the net. Dwyer scored the first, and Amro Tarek added his first MLS goal to level things. Teal Bunbury restored the Revolution’s lead, but Scott Sutter headed home a Yoshimar Yotún set piece delivery in stoppage time to rescue a point for the Lions.
Orlando City and New England split the season series in 2017. City completed a 6-1 demolition of 10-man New England at home Sept. 27, 2017. Kaká scored a brace, with Dwyer getting his first home goal as an MLS Lion and Yotún and Antonio Nocerino each scoring their first-ever goal with OCSC. Seb Hines also scored for Orlando and Lee Nguyen got the Revs’ only tally on a free kick. New England won at Gillette Stadium that year by a 4-0 count and it could have been worse. Kei Kamara netted a hat trick and Bunbury also scored, with Nguyen assisting on all four goals to tie an MLS record. Jose Aja was sent off after receiving two yellow cards.
The Lions went 1-0-2 in the series in 2016, winning 3-1 at home on July 31. The teams played a controversial 2-2 draw in Orlando on April 17, 2016. The second 2016 meeting reached the same final score on April 30 in New England.
The teams met twice in 2015, with Orlando City rallying from a 2-0 deficit in the final 17 minutes to draw 2-2 at the Citrus Bowl in April. The Sept. 5 rematch at Gillette Stadium didn’t go as well, with New England taking a 3-0 win. Fagundez, Agudelo and Chris Tierney scored for the Revolution.
Overview
Orlando City has won two straight games and three of its last four, including a 5-0 dismantling of D.C. United a week ago, with five different Lions finding the net. The club struggled to score for most of the season but has put the ball in the net 15 times in the last five matches. That offense took a hit with McGuire’s departure for the U.S. Olympic team, but the attacking midfielders have been gelling of late. Orlando’s road record of 4-4-3 is respectable, with a 2-1 win at Toronto in the last away game pulling the Lions to .500 in road matches.
The Revolution, like Orlando City, have improved of late. New England is a very un-Revs-like 4-6-1 at home this season, but has won five of its last seven matches, although two of those losses have come in the team’s last three games, including a 2-0 loss at Seattle a week ago. However, two of those wins have come at the expense of FC Cincinnati and the New York Red Bulls.
Having any success against New England usually demands that the opposition keeps tabs on Gil, one of the league’s most lethal playmakers and a guy who can score goals of his own as well. Gil has five goals — just two behind Revs’ leading scorer Giacomo Vrioni — and leads New England with six assists. However, he’s listed as out on the availability report. Vrioni becomes the key focal point for the Orlando defense to stop, although fullbacks Brandon Bye and DeJuan Jones can turn any New England attacker into a threat with their play on the outside.
“First, try to keep improving the level like always. The results obviously give us more confidence to continue winning games and adding important points,” Orlando City Head Coach Oscar Pareja said ahead of the match. “The flexibility of the team is much better, and the cohesiveness we’ve found in the last two games has given us optimism. Keep working, the journey is still in front of us. We must keep improving and maintaining this level of playing well and confidence in front of the goal. It’s been great to see.”
In addition to McGuire, Orlando City will be without Michael Halliday (knee) and Mason Stajduhar (lower leg). New England will be without Carles Gil (leg), Nacho Gil (knee), Dylan Borrero (hip), Thomas Chancalay (knee), and Nick Lima (groin). In addition, Buck (quad), Emmanuel Boateng (hamstring), Mark-Anthony Kaye (hip), and Tommy McNamara (hamstring) are questionable.

Orlando City vs. Real Salt Lake: Player Grades and Man of the Match
How did your favorite Lions perform in Orlando City’s 2-1 home win against Real Salt Lake?
Orlando City got a much-needed win on Saturday night, but it was anything but easy. Despite holding the bulk of possession through the first half against a heavily rotated Real Salt Lake side, the Lions generated zero shots and fell behind when the visitors took advantage of young fullback Zakaria Taifi, who was deputized at left back due to the absences of Bernardo Rhein and Adrian Marin. But Orlando rallied after halftime due in large part to three important halftime subs and the introduction of Tyrese Spicer to storm back for a 2-1 win, with Antoine Griezmann scoring both second-half goals.
Let’s take a look at how Orlando City’s players rated in their matchup against Real Salt Lake.
Starters
GK, Maxime Crepeau, 6 — Salt Lake scored one goal out of four shots on target against the Orlando goalkeeper, and he did well to save two of them, especially a diving one hander in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time. One was blocked by Eduard Atuesta, and the one that slipped by was a tough one that would have been difficult for any keeper. Dominik Marczuk put a first-touch volley shot past Crepeau from close range, after Sam Junqua’s lofted ball over the Orlando defense left him one-on-one. Otherwise, it was a relatively quiet night for the Lions’ goalkeeper. His passing was 78.1% accurate, hitting six out of 13 long-ball attempts.
D, Zakaria Taifi, 6 — It was a mixed bag for Taifi in this match. He struggled a bit in the first half with some sloppy touches that interrupted the Lions flow in possession. He also provided a well-weighted through ball for Tiago early on in the match that ended in an Orlando corner. The biggest mark against him though was that he allowed Marczuk to run past him into the box in the 36th minute, putting him in on goal, unopposed, for Salt Lake’s goal. Taifi improved markedly in the second half though, as did the rest of the Lions, and he helped to create some clear-cut attacking sequences. He got off a couple of shots himself as well, pinging one off the outside of the left post. He contributed a key pass and was clean in his passing at 89.2%. Defensively, he had one interception.
D, Robin Jansson, 6.5 — Jansson bounced back from Wednesday’s game against Chicago. He made an excellent clearance after a hard recovery run that could have easily been an own goal, albeit on an offside ball, but the effort and skill still count. He threw himself at a charging Marczuk, preventing a breakaway and taking a knock in the process, although he was able to continue without too much trouble. He kept his head, as the captain should, and did his job, contributing four clearances, completing three out of four long balls, and passing with 98.6% accuracy.
D, David Brekalo, 6 — Brekalo had a steady match against Real Salt Lake. He lost a 50/50 ball in a bad spot early in the match, allowing a dangerous breakaway but also fought hard defending the Orlando box all night. He stood his ground and provided a solid defensive presence if nothing else. He didn’t stand out in any conspicuous way, and made no offensive contributions, but he did finish with a team-high six clearances and was 98.4% accurate in his passing.
D, Griffin Dorsey, 7 — Dorsey was active in the attack down the right side of the pitch as we have come to expect. He combined well with Justin Ellis, Atuesta and Griezmann, especially in the second half. He was busy on the other side of the ball as well, anticipating the RSL attack and making a crucial interception in the box in the 64th minute, that would have likely wound up as a dangerous shot otherwise for Diego Luna. He was precise in his passing at 89.7%, contributed one key pass, and attempted five crosses with one completed. Defensively, he logged two tackles, an interception, and a clearance.
MF, Ivan Angulo, 5.5 — Angulo played mostly in his traditional left attacking wing position against Real Salt Lake, but he showed signs of fatigue and made some mistakes that could have been costly. Crepeau’s huge save bailed him out for his turnover in the fifth minute of stoppage time just before halftime that ignited the RSL break and nearly handed Marczuk his second goal of the half. Angulo’s box score was modest, and he had less influence on the game than usual, with one key pass and one incomplete long-ball attempt. Although he completed 93.8% of his passes, he seemed hesitant to take on defenders on the dribble, often dropping the ball back, and his heat map is a blob just barely across the midfield line in the attacking half. Defensively, he chipped in three tackles.
MF, Luis Otavio, 5.5 — Otavio was part of the low energy first half of this match. He was not alone in this by any means as the Lions were not impressive as a whole. One of his more aggressive moments was an attempt to carry the ball up the middle of the pitch, only to be dispossessed by a clinical tackle from behind. Otavio completed a couple of long-ball attempts as well but contributed no other offensive or defensive statistics, while passing at 93.8%. Otavio has been improving as of late, but the first half needed a bit more from the midfielder, who was replaced at the half.
MF, Eduard Atuesta, 6.5 — The veteran midfielder appeared a step behind to start the match, providing an overcooked cross in the 14th minute, and getting a bit turned around in midfield in the 16th minute. He also made more than his fair share of bad passes while not under much pressure. He began to click though in the second half, and made his mark through some solid possession with his teammates, as well as his own direct contributions. He slid a through ball past Real Salt Lake’s defense for Griezmann who chipped the goalkeeper with a shot that hit the outside netting. Atuesta followed that up by finding Ellis off an RSL turnover, leading to Orlando’s first goal, on what would have been a secondary assist had Daryl Dike scored instead of Griezmann on the rebound. He sent in one incomplete cross, and connected on one out of three long balls. He was 90.8% accurate in his passing and defensively contributed one tackle and one blocked shot.
MF, Marco Pasalic, 5 — Pasalic wasn’t able to combine well on the night and seemed at times as if he may have been trying to do too much. He attempted two crosses, completing one, and connected on a long ball, passing with an 87.5% success rate. As the Lions did not attempt a shot in the first half, Pasalic did not have an attempt. The Croatian registered no defensive statistics. He checked out at halftime in the team’s triple substitution.
F, Antoine Griezmann, 8 (MotM) — The second half is doing a lot of lifting on this grade for Griezmann. His first half was not much better than most of the rest of the team. He was a little better than most on the team in the first half, but his touch eluded him at times, as evidenced by his 64.6% passing rate and rare lack of a key pass, and the minutes logged during a hot, wet August full of games every three days seemed to be taking its toll. But, he came alive in the second half, pouncing on rebound of Dike’s saved shot to put the first goal away for the Lions. For his second, he tried to back-heel Tyrese Spicer’s cutback into the middle, but it came off of Juan José Arias and fell right back to him to slot it into the bottom corner for the brace and the winning goal. Griezmann, and the attacking group executed some quality possession outside of the Real Salt Lake 18-yard box, for large stretches of the second half. It’s difficult to break down a low block but the Lions managed it twice, with Griezmann putting two past former Lions backup goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar. He put two of his five shots on target, but came agonizingly close to his hat trick with the chip attempt and a volley just over the bar both coming close. He completed three dribbles as well. Defensively, Griezmann provided a tackle and a clearance.
F, Tiago, 4.5 — Tiago continues to struggle to produce in the final third, getting into good spots before the play typically breaks down. Multiple promising attacks ended with a Tiago touch in this game, although he won a couple of set pieces. He registered three incomplete crosses, and one tackle, but he managed only eight touches in his 45 minutes, completing 87.5% of his passes before being subbed off for Ellis at the half.
Substitutes
F, Daryl Dike (45′), 6.5 — Dike came on for Pasalic at the half. The big forward drew attention away from Griezmann, helping to create space, and he brought down a difficult pass from Ellis and shot at goal, but Stajduhar made the save before Griezmann fired it into the net. The ball didn’t make it to him much, and he had to contend with being held a lot, but he made what he could out of his limited opportunities. Dike contributed one key pass, one incomplete cross, and took one shot that was on target. He completed 72.7% of his 11 pass attempts.
F, Justin Ellis (45′), 7.5 — Ellis came on for Tiago and was a major spark to the Lions’ offense. Once again, combining creatively with his teammates and dribbling through the RSL defense, Ellis brought the needed quality to put Salt Lake on the back foot. Offensively, he took two shots, though both were off target, made two key passes, completed three of four crosses, and attempted three long balls without completing one. His passing rate was good (83.3% on 30 attempts). Defensively, he recorded one clearance.
MF, Joran Gerbet (45′), 6.5 — Gerbet came on for Otavio at the half and was an important connecting piece, helping keep possession in the attacking half and found ways to progress the ball up the field where Otavio had previously curled back and recycled the attack. He brought energy to the midfield, which was much needed after the first half, and was part of the buildup for the first goal, picking up the loose ball off Jansson’s challenge at midfield. He had excellent passing stats for being generally in the middle of the pitch, with 97.6% accuracy on 42 passes. He completed one long ball and had no other offensive or defensive stats.
F, Tyrese Spicer (69′), 7 — Spicer came on for Taifi, and brought his typical supersub energy. He drove into the Real Salt Lake 18-yard box and cut the ball back toward the penalty spot, starting the sequence that ended with Griezmann’s game-winning goal, and he never let up after that. He forced a corner in the 84th minute and was active in pressing defensively, and while seeking attacking opportunities. He managed a shot, which was off target, and one cross that did not connect. He passed with 77.8% accuracy on his nine passes.
MF, Wilder Cartagena (85′), N/A — Cartagena came on for Atuesta late, and his job was to help see out the match. He did exactly that, cutting out a potentially dangerous cross from inside the box in the 88th minute and contributing two clearances. He only attempted 10 passes, but completed nine (90%) of them.
That’s how I saw the individual performances in a much-needed Orlando win. Let us know how you saw the game in the comments below, and don’t forget to vote for your Man of the Match.

Lions and Pride win, OCB falls to Atlanta United 2, latest MLS transfer roundup, and more.
Hello, Mane Landers! I hope all is well with you down in Florida. I’ve been busy at work, but I tried to watch a few soccer games over the weekend. Our Lions and Pride both won, while OCB’s winless skid continues. We’ve got plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.
Griezmann’s Late Winner Lifts Lions Past Real Salt Lake
Orlando City defeated Real Salt Lake 2-1 on Saturday at Inter.co Stadium on Antoine Griezmann’s second-half brace. The Lions trailed 1-0 at halftime, but Griezmann scored twice after the break to win it for Orlando, which snapped its four-match winless streak across all competitions. That result pulled the Lions just over the playoff line, moving them up to ninth in the Eastern Conference table with 24 points. Orlando City’s next match is on the road Saturday at Minnesota United.
Pride Beat Washington Spirit on the Road
The Orlando Pride beat the Washington Spirit 1-0 at Audi Field Sunday, snapping their three-match losing streak. Haley McCutcheon scored the lone goal early in the first half off an assist by Barbra Banda and Orlando held on for dear life for the win despite a dominating performance by the Spirit, who just couldn’t put any of their shots into the net. Pride goalkeeper Cosette Morche got the start over Anna Moorhouse and made a clutch save deep in stoppage time on Washington forward Paige Metayer’s free header to preserve the shutout. The Pride will play their next match at home against the Utah Royals on Saturday.
OCB Crushed 5-1 by Atlanta United 2
Orlando City traded first-half stoppage-time goals to enter halftime even at 1-1 on the road, but a terrible second half saw the Young Lions get blasted 5-1 by Atlanta United 2 on the road at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground in Marietta, GA, on Saturday. Atlanta struck first before Issah Haruna equalized for the Young Lions just before halftime. Cameron Dunbar scored his second goal of the match for Atlanta to start the second-half onslaught, and Arif Kovac scored a second-half brace. Atlanta won its second straight, while the Young Lions have lost five straight matches. OCB will be home for its next match on Sunday, taking on Crown Legacy FC at Osceola County Stadium.

UEFA and Concacaf Reportedly Discussed Combined Nations League Tournament
UEFA and Concacaf have reportedly held talks on a combined Nations League tournament that could feature all 96 European, North and Central American, and Caribbean countries, directly challenging FIFA. The planned competition would be a biennial tournament and could start as soon as 2028. The proposed format would replace, rather than add to, existing international fixtures, and games would be played in geographical blocks to reduce travel. Both confederations are still seeking FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s removal and are reportedly working together to propose an alternative candidate to stand against him in the presidential election next March.

Orlando City vs. Real Salt Lake: Five Takeaways
Here’s what we learned from Orlando City’s 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake.
Orlando City hosted Real Salt Lake at Inter.co Stadium Saturday, and it was a tale of two halves. The first half was one of the most boring first halves of soccer ever, and the second half was a wild free-for-all with Orlando City coming to life. The Lions were able to earn all three points at home, defeating RSL 2-1. Here are my five takeaways from the match.
An Inevitable Goal
Orlando City put out a mostly first-choice team on short rest, while RSL rotated pretty heavily due to their schedule congestion and a Leagues Cup knockout match coming up on Tuesday. The Lions had the majority of the possession through the first 35 mintues, while RSL was able to send the ball over the top a few times early, but the visitors kept getting the timing wrong against Orlando’s high line, resulting in offside calls. That was until the 36th minute, when Dominik Marczuk managed to stay onside, blazed past Zakaria Taifi, and was all alone on the back post. It wasn’t hard to put it in from there. Orlando City had the better of the play up to that point, but it still felt like Real Salt Lake’s goal was more likely.
Possession Without Purpose
Despite holding 58% possession in the first half, Orlando City managed to get exactly zero shots on goal on zero shots total. Zero shots taken the entire first half! As I mentioned above, that was zero shots against a heavily rotated RSL squad. For a team with Antoine Griezmann, Marco Pasalic, and Griffin Dorsey in the starting lineup, that stat is unacceptable. The lack of any chances resulted in Martin Perelman bringing on Justin Ellis and Daryl Dike as offensive halftime substitutions.
Subs Make a Difference
It took less than 10 minutes for Ellis and Dike, along with fellow substitute Joran Gerbet, to make a difference. While it was ultimately Griezmann who scored the goal, it was Gerbet, Ellis, and Dike that made it happen. Gerbet picked up a loose ball Eduard Atuesta won and sent it to Ellis on the right. Ellis sent the ball into the box to Dike, who took it with his back to goal, pirouetted with the ball, and shot it. Unfortunately for Dike, Mason Stajduhar was there to block it. Unfortunately for Stajduhar, Griezmann was there for the poacher’s goal to level the score for Orlando City. Griezmann positioned himself wisely without the ball, but it was the three halftime subs that really made it happen.
Griezmann Gets Another
After equalizing, Orlando City had all the momentum and pressed for a second goal. It was Griezmann who provided the winning goal with his first brace for the Lions. If his first goal was a “right time, right place” type of goal, his second was luck and skill combined. He took a pass in the box from Tyrese Spicer and tried to back heel it to Dike. The ball bounced off the defender and right back to Griezmann, who wasted no time in putting it in the back of the net. It was a microcosm of Griezmann’s time in Orlando for me. He tried to be unselfish, but ultimately taking the shot himself was what was needed. More of this please.
Possession With Purpose
If Orlando City did almost nothing with the ball in the first half, the Lions did everything needed with the ball in the second half. They actually raised the possession to 60% by the end of the match, scored two goals, and didn’t allow a second from RSL. The defenders were able to clear most of the attacks and Maxime Crepeau cleaned up anything that got through. Orlando City was able to continue to push into the attack even after the second goal. As I said above, it was a tale of two halves, and fortunately, the second half was enough for the win.
That is what I saw in Orlando City’s 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. Vamos Orlando!
