Dan MacDonald, The Mane Land

It’s matchday, Mane Landers! I hope you slept in this morning. If not, you might want to catch a nap this afternoon since Orlando City doesn’t kick off until 10:30 p.m., as the Lions are all the way out west for a match against the Seattle Sounders. Fortunately, that gives us time to watch the Orlando Pride match earlier in the evening. I know that I’m looking forward to staying up super late — well, late for an old guy like me. Until then, let’s get to the links!

Lions Prepared for Seattle

Orlando City is ready to take on the Seattle Sounders this evening, and you can get prepared to watch and support. Everything you need to know about where the Lions stand and what to expect from the opponents is available here and our Michael Citro will have a match preview for you later today. The last time the two teams met, Orlando City pulled out a come-from-behind victory thanks to goals from Facundo Torres, Ercan Kara, and Kyle Smith. All three will be in the Emerald City for the match. It has been confirmed that Raúl Ruidíaz will not be at tonight’s match as he will be attending his father’s funeral. Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones.

Pride Ready to Host the Current

It’s been a rollercoaster ride recently for the Orlando Pride with a big win over the Portland Thorns, but losses to the Houston Dash and North Carolina Courage. As such, Seb Hines is making sure his team doesn’t take the Kansas City Current for granted. The Current are near the bottom of the table, but that doesn’t mean the Pride can relax. There are some things to watch as the Pride host the Current. Orlando is on a three-match winning streak at home and is undefeated against the Current in Exploria Stadium in the series. Let’s hope that continues.

Marta May Be Used as a Super Sub by Brazil

The Women’s World Cup is less than a month away, and the Orlando Pride’s Marta will be representing Brazil for the sixth time in her career. The six-time FIFA World Player of the Year is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 115 goals — 17 in Women’s World Cup competitions — but at 37 years old she may be coming off the bench this go around. Marta is still recovering from a left knee injury. Regardless of whether Marta starts or not, Brazil coach Pia Sundhage said, “I am sure she will give everything.”

The Beautiful Pitch Invasion

Exploria Stadium hosted (most of) The Beautiful Game Friday night. Team Ronaldinho took on Team Roberto Carlos in a star-studded match of legends. Orlando City’s former captain Nani returned for the exhibition match. There was plenty of scoring — which is not uncommon in these types of matches — and the match ended 4-3 in favor of Team Ronaldinho. When I say ended, I mean that the game was abandoned due to the numerous pitch invasions and a heavy rainstorm. For all the details check out our story here.

USMNT Gold Cup Competition Begins

The USMNT will kick off its defense of the Concacaf Gold Cup tonight, with coverage starting at 9:30 p.m. — 10 p.m. kickoff — against Jamaica. The roster is very MLS-heavy to allow the European-based players we saw in the Nations League competition to get some rest. In addition to veterans like Aaron Long, DeAndre Yedlin, and Matt Turner you have a slew of youngsters who are looking to prove themselves. Cade Cowell, James Sands, Aidan Morris and others will try to make the most of their playing time in hopes of making the 2026 World Cup squad.

U.S. to Host 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

The United States will host the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament will be the first to be expanded to a 32 team field. The Seattle Sounders — who have one of the four Concacaf spots — will be joined by clubs like Chelsea FC, Real Madrid, and Manchester City. The announcement means the United States will host large international competitions in back-to-back years, with the shared hosting of the 2026 World Cup the following year. FIFA officials also delayed voting on the 2030 World Cup hosts until the latter part of 2024.

  • I don’t actually recommend watching it again, but José Martinez‘ goal against Orlando City was named MLS Goal of the Matchday. It’s kind of tough to argue against it, though I still didn’t enjoy it.
  • Concacaf announced the suspensions for the four players shown red cards in the U.S. versus Mexico Nations League match.
  • Inter Miami is apparently getting the band back together, announcing Sergio Busquets on social media. He can’t actually sign just yet, but a deal can be in place. It should be interesting to see how the Herons clear cap space and which players depart to create that space.
  • Players from MLS and other leagues will have an easier time signing with clubs in England as the English Football Association has changed the regulations on bringing in players from “lower-profile leagues.”
  • Faruk Hadžibegić agreed to resign as Bosnia-Herzegovina coach after only four games in charge. One win and three consecutive losses was enough for the Federation to ask him to resign.
  • Jose Mourinho has asked to step down from his role on the UEFA football board after he was banned for four European matches following a verbal altercation with referee Anthony Taylor in the Europa League final.
  • Check out the stunning 2023 Community Pride Pitch at the Ground in New York City. Sophia Yeshi is one talented artist in my opinion.

That will do it for today. Vamos Orlando!

Hello, Mane Landers! I hope all is well with you in Florida. I’ve been busy at work as we get close to Christmas and covered some high school bowling and basketball over the past week. We’ve got plenty to cover today, so let’s get to the links.

Mauricio Pereyra Retires

Orlando City posted on social media over the weekend that former Orlando City captain and midfielder Mauricio Pereyra has retired from professional soccer.

Pereyra spent five seasons with Orlando City after joining the club from FC Krasnodar in 2019, scoring seven goals and adding 29 assists in 136 appearances across all competitions. The 35-year-old recently played for his former club, Nacional, in Uruguay. He also spent time at Lanus, and we here at The Mane Land wish him all the best in his retirement.

Orlando City Assistant Coach Fabian Bazan Departs After Six Seasons

Orlando City and Assistant Coach of Fitness and Performance Fabian Bazan have mutually agreed to part ways after six seasons. Orlando City announced the news Saturday. Bazan joined Head Coach Oscar Pareja’s coaching staff prior to the 2020 season after working with him at previous clubs since 2015. During his tenure, Bazan was part of Orlando City’s coaching staff during its successful run, winning the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, qualifying for two Concacaf Champions Cup tournaments, and making six consecutive MLS Cup playoff appearances.

Americans Abroad

Plenty of Americans were in action in Europe over the weekend. Christian Pulisic played 73 minutes for AC Milan in a 2-2 draw against Sassuolo, while Weston McKennie played a full 90 minutes as Juventus beat Bologna 1-0. Antonee Robinson made his return to the starting XI for Fulham and played a full 90 minutes as his side defeated Burnley 3-1 on the road. Two Americans squared off in Ligue 1 as Tim Weah and Marseille faced Folarin Balogun and AS Monaco Sunday. Both players played a full 90 minutes as Marseille edged Monaco 1-0. Ricardo Pepi became the first USMNT player to score in four straight appearances in all competitions in the Eredivisie since Aron Johannsson did it in 2013-2014, as PSV Eindhoven defeated Heracles Almelo 4-3. Tyler Adams and AFC Bournemouth will face Manchester United in Premier League action later today.

  • A biopic film focusing on Orlando Pride forward Marta’s soccer journey is reportedly in development.
  • In local college soccer news, the Rollins College Tars fell 2-0 to Midwestern State in the NCAA Division II men’s soccer national championship. Meanwhile, the Florida Tech Panthers defeated Franklin Pierce 3-0 to win the NCAA Division II women’s soccer national championship over the weekend.

That will do it for me today, Mane Landers. Enjoy your Monday, and I’ll see you next time.

NWSL reportedly approves new roster mechanism, USMNT will play Senegal in May, USWNT second in FIFA rankings, and more.

Happy Friday, Mane Landers! Counting today, there are just 20 days left of 2025. This year has felt like forever, but I also can’t seem to wrap my head around 2026 being just around the corner. I’m hoping to knock out a majority of my errands over the next few days to help ease into the coming weeks. Let’s get to the links!

NWSL Reportedly Approves New Roster Mechanism

The biggest storyline of the NWSL off-season so far is where Trinity Rodman will be playing next year, making the salary cap a notable talking point. The league’s NWSL Board of Governors reportedly approved a roster mechanism that would allow clubs to pay certain star players beyond the current salary cap. Clubs would be able to pay “High Impact Players” up to $1 million over the salary cap, with only a portion of that salary being a cap hit.

In order for players to qualify as a High Impact Player, they would have to meet commercial and sporting benchmarks. It’s a similar concept to Designated Players in MLS, with the limit to how much NWSL clubs can go over the cap being the biggest difference. All in all, this would help NWSL clubs compete with offers from clubs abroad for the league’s top players.

USMNT Will Face Senegal in May

The United States Men’s National Team will host Senegal on May 31 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte for its penultimate game before the World Cup. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two nations and it should be a good match between the U.S. and one of the top African teams. Senegal is currently ranked 19th in the FIFA men’s rankings and went undefeated in World Cup qualifying, winning seven games. Following this match, the USMNT will take on Germany in Chicago on June 6 for its send-off match before the tournament.

USWNT Remains Second in FIFA Rankings

The latest FIFA women’s rankings were released and the United States Women’s National Team maintained its spot in second place, although the gap between it and first-place Spain has widened. The U.S. won four of its five games this past window, but still lost points due to its 2-1 defeat to Portugal on Oct. 22. Spain benefitted from beating Sweden and Germany en route to winning the UEFA Nations League. Brazil, which beat England, Italy, and Portugal, moved up a spot to sixth in the rankings. Meanwhile, Canada fell to 10th after losing all four of its games.

Europa League Roundup

The latest round of Europa League action wrapped up and six teams have secured a spot in at least the knockout stage. Lyon, Midtjylland, and Aston Villa all won and are tied at the top with 15 points, while Real Betis, Freiburg, and Ferencvaros were victorious to remain unbeaten and claim spots in the next round as well. Roma edged closer to qualifying by beating Celtic 3-0, and Nottingham Forest also picked up three points after winning 2-1 against Utrecht in the Netherlands. Only two matchdays remain in the league phase and things are still far from certain for most clubs, which should set up for a fun finish next month.

Dagur Dan Thorhallsson traded, Orlando City transfer news, MLS players making an impact for the USMNT, and more.

How’s it going, Mane Landers? It may not be snowing, but the cooler weather has been helping me get in the festive spirit. While things remain a bit busy as the holiday season wears on, I’ve thankfully been able to enjoy some moments of peace here and there and finally accomplished my reading goal for the year. But enough about me, let’s get to the links!

Orlando City Trades Dagur Dan Thorhallsson

Dagur Dan Thorhallsson was traded to CF Montreal on Wednesday, with Orlando City receiving a hefty sum of $500,000 in General Allocation Money in exchange. Orlando will retain a sell-on percentage and could also receive an additional $125,000 in GAM if performance metrics are met. Thorhallsson has played the past three seasons in Orlando and has been a Swiss Army knife of sorts for the Lions, helping the team reach the Eastern Conference finals in 2024. This amount of GAM is nothing to sneeze at and should give Orlando some flexibility when it comes to constructing its roster for next season. Orlando fans might see Thorhallsson in action again as soon as March 14 when the Lions host Montreal, although it will be weird not seeing him in purple.

Keeping Up With Orlando City Transfer News

According to Tom Bogert of The Athletic ($), the Lions are reportedly finalizing a deal for Brazilian winger Tiago to join from Bahia for a $4 million transfer fee. The 20-year-old has done well when on the field for Bahia in Brazil’s top flight and had a hat trick in the Copa do Nordeste final. Hopefully he can make an impact as an MLS U22 Initiative winger in Orlando.

Tom Bogert (@tombogert.bsky.social) 2025-12-10T14:34:49.629Z

Another interesting bit of news is that Orlando is reportedly close to transferring center back Rodrigo Schlegel to Atlas in Liga MX for a fee around $600,000, which is higher than what the Lions paid to sign him. The times definitely seem to be changing in the City Beautiful. Bogert also noted that Orlando’s $3.5 million deal for 18-year-old midfielder Luis Otavio is still on, and that the club is interested in moving on from Designated Player Luis Muriel.

MLS Players Stand Out With USMNT

Orlando City defender Alex Freeman is one of many MLS players who have made a strong case for being included on the United States Men’s National Team’s roster for next year’s World Cup. The 21-year-old was named MLS Young Player of the Year and is competing for a starting spot with the USMNT. Max Arfsten, Diego Luna, and Cristian Roldan are all in contention as well, and it’s been nice to see Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino give MLS players chances to shine.

NWSL Transfer News Roundup

Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher agreed to a new contract with the Chicago Stars, signing a one-year contract. The 37-year-old has been with Chicago for the past 10 years and she is one of three active players who have been in the league since its inaugural season in 2013.

The North Carolina Courage signed Nigerian forward Chioma Okafor to a three-year contract through 2028 with an option for 2029. She helped Nigeria win the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations and just finished her collegiate career with the University of Connecticut, where she scored 30 goals over 57 appearances. Speaking of collegiate players joining the league, NJ/NY Gotham FC signed forward Talia Sommer, who recorded 28 goals and 24 assists over the past four years with Butler.

  • Thorhallsson isn’t the only player CF Montreal has been wheeling and dealing for. The club sent $1.2 million in GAM to Real Salt Lake for defender Brayan Vera, with another $350,000 in GAM heading RSL’s way if performance metrics are met.
  • Houston Dash defender Katie Lind announced her retirement from professional soccer after a career that included 193 appearances across all competitions.
  • The United Super League is reportedly proposing a $55,000 minimum salary that would increase in future years as part of the collective bargaining agreement negotiations between the league and the USL Players Association.
  • If you’re intending to visit a World Cup host city next summer, make sure to plan accordingly for obscene price gouging.
