Orlando City defeats Charlotte FC in playoff opener, Emily Sams makes her USWNT debut, MLS playoff results, and more.
Hello, Mane Landers! I hope all is well with you down in Florida. I was busy working all week but got to check out some 2025 U.S. Open Cup qualifying matches in Chicago over the weekend. Orlando City has started its playoff journey, and we have plenty to discuss, so let’s get to the links.
Lions Win Playoff Opener Against Charlotte FC
Orlando City got its playoff run off to a good start on Sunday night, defeating Charlotte FC 2-0 at Inter&Co Stadium. The Lions won the first game in this best-of-three, first-round series. Orlando scored in each half, with the team’s Designated Players doing well to lift the team to victory. Orlando controlled the match from start to finish, and goalkeeper Pedro Gallese only needed to make two saves to earn his third MLS playoff shutout. The second game in this series will be Friday at Bank of America Stadium.
Emily Sams Earns Praise While With USWNT
Sports Illustrated featured Orlando Pride defender Emily Sams and her future with the United States Women’s National Team. Although she did not play during the USWNT’s gold medal triumph, she still got to experience it and earn a medal. Orlando Pride Head Coach Seb Hines gave insight into how far Sams has come in developing her game and succeeding in her second season with the club.
“[Sams] has been instrumental, and I think everyone can see how far she’s come from the day we signed her last year to where she’s at right now,” Hines says. “She should take a lot of confidence in her performances but also getting her first call-up and going away with the U.S. national team and being in that environment goes a long way. Credit to her because she’s put a lot of work into her craft and we’re just so pleased to have her here.”
Sams has been a critical part of the Orlando Pride’s defense this season. The Pride lead the league in shutouts, with 12 clean sheets in the NWSL, and have only conceded 18 goals this season. Sams has had 151 recoveries going into the regular season’s final match, which is the fourth most of any defender. The Pride will face the Seattle Reign in their last match of the regular season on Saturday before their NWSL playoff match on Nov. 8.
USWNT Defeats Iceland in Friendly
The United States Women’s National Team defeated Iceland 3-1 on Sunday at GEODIS Park in Nashville. Sams started the match to earn her first cap for the USWNT and played a full 90 minutes. The USWNT was down 1-0 at halftime but turned it around in the second half. Lynn Williams, Lindsey Horan, and Emma Sears scored for the USWNT to help secure another win against Iceland. Sears also added an assist and became the first player to record both a goal and an assist in her first national team match. The USWNT has remained unbeaten for 12 matches since Emma Hayes took charge as the head coach, and its next match is on Wednesday against Argentina at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville.
MLS Playoff First Round Recap
The first round of the MLS Cup playoffs is underway, and we’ve had a few matches played over the weekend. On Friday, Inter Miami defeated Atlanta United 2-1 in the first game of its best-of-three series to take a 1-0 lead. The LA Galaxy dominated the Colorado Rapids 5-0 in their first game, with Riqui Puig and Dejan Joveljic scoring two goals each in their opening matchup. LAFC won 2-1 Sunday night against the Vancouver Whitecaps, with Denis Bouanga and Cristian Olivera scoring. Tonight, the Seattle Sounders face the Houston Dynamo while FC Cincinnati takes on New York City FC. Tomorrow’s matches will feature Real Salt Lake against Minnesota United while the Columbus Crew face the New York Red Bulls.

- The San Jose Earthquakes are reportedly in advanced negotiations with former New England Revolution boss Bruce Arena to name him the club’s next head coach.
- Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Holden Trent passed away over the weekend. We here at The Mane Land offer our condolences to Trent’s family, loved ones, and teammates during this difficult time.
- Julian Carranza scored a goal in Feyenoord’s 2-0 win over FC Utrecht yesterday. He took a moment to pay his respects and express his condolences after the recent news of Holden Trent’s passing.
- Barcelona dominated Real Madrid in El Clasico with a 4-0 win against its La Liga rival on Saturday.
- Darren Fletcher, who coaches on Manchester United’s first team, was charged with misconduct by the English FA after confronting the referees during halftime following the team’s 2-1 over Brentford on Oct. 19.
That will do it for me today, Mane Landers. Enjoy your Monday and I’ll see you next time.

Lion Links: 4/17/26
Caitlin Carducci settling in with the Orlando Pride, Seven Castain scores for U.S. U-23 team, Alex Freeman adjusting in Spain, and more.
Happy Friday! My mood is still buoyed by Orlando City’s midweek win as we get ready for another weekend filled with soccer. The USWNT plays tonight, the Lions are in action on Saturday, and Orlando City B will wrap things up with a match against Carolina Core FC on Sunday. It should be a nice next few days and I’m looking forward to trying out a new brunch spot near me as well. Let’s get to the links!
Caitlin Carducci Builds Orlando Pride Foundation
Orlando Pride Vice President of Soccer Operations and General Manager Caitlin Carducci has been with the team for a few months since being hired in January and is starting to settle in with the club. It’s a different role than the one she had with the Kansas City Current, as she’s making more final decisions here in Orlando. Carducci discussed her focus on building relationships with each player early on, the hiring of Mark Wilson as the club’s technical director, and how she’s creating a solid infrastructure for the club’s operations.
Seven Castain Scores Winner for U.S. U-23 Team
The United States U-23 Women’s National Team wrapped up its trio of friendlies in Spain with a 4-3 win over France. Orlando Pride forward Seven Castain came off the bench and scored the winner for the U.S. in stoppage time. Fellow Pride player Ally Lemos started the match. The U.S. went undefeated over the course of these friendlies, previously drawing against France and Denmark. The Pride had plenty of representation during these games, with Castain, Lemos, Simone Jackson, and Yolanda Thomas all in Europe during the break.
Alex Freeman Finding His Footing in Spain
Former Orlando City defender Alex Freeman, who was transferred to Villarreal earlier this year, spoke on how he aims to improve from this move to Europe.
“Football-wise, this is one of the things I need in my game. I need to take it up a notch and be more technical. It’s something that, if I had to choose a club, I would choose this club in this country because it’s somewhere where I can take my next step,” he says. “It was always the right move for me. I needed to go, not only to prove myself, because I have done that in the past, but to really test myself. I want to show that I am able to do it and be in that environment.”
Along with the language barrier, Freeman detailed how he’s adjusting to the faster pace of the game in Villarreal. The 21-year-old also talked about how sudden the transfer was, his goals this La Liga season, and the warm welcome he’s gotten so far.
USWNT Takes On Japan Tonight
The USWNT will host Japan tonight in Denver in the third match between the two this month. It will be interesting to see how the USWNT responds after losing 1-0 to Japan on Tuesday, particularly in regards to which players Head Coach Emma Hayes chooses for the starting lineup. Japan is a tough opponent that should continue to test the U.S. as both teams prepare for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

- Orlando City’s next U.S. Open Cup match will be on April 29 against the New England Revolution. The match will take place in Rhode Island at Centreville Bank Stadium, which is where the Revs just played Rhode Island FC
- Bernardo Silva announced that he will leave Manchester City this summer after nine years with the club. It’s unclear where he will play next, but I wouldn’t be surprised if New York City FC is in the mix.
- Barcelona filed another complaint to UEFA over the officiating in its Champions League quarterfinal against Atletico Madrid. If recent events are anything to go by, it’s going to be awkward when the confederation rules Barcelona as the victor two months after the final.
- Amid reports that FC Cincinnati was exploring options to add Neymar this summer, the 34-year-old forward stated that he intends to see through his contract with Santos until it expires at the end of the year.
- New Zealand forward Chris Wood exited Nottingham Forest’s Europa League quarterfinal against Porto due to a knee injury, putting his availability for the World Cup into question.
- The Europa League semifinals are set and Forest will take on Aston Villa in an English showdown for a spot in the final. On the other side of the bracket, Freiburg will play against Braga.
- Cristiano Ronaldo exited Al Nassr’s 1-0 win over Al Ettifaq due to stomach pains that later caused him to vomit according to his head coach.
That’s all I have for you this time around. I hope you all have a fantastic Friday and rest of your weekend!

Lion Links: 4/16/26
Orlando City wins against FC Naples, U.S. Open Cup results, USWNT takeaways following loss, and more.
This Thursday might feel a little more like a Friday thanks to Orlando City winning a game last night. Sure, it was more like the Lions failed to complete an implosion, but we’ll take what we can get at this point. Another MLS match is on the horizon this weekend, so if you crafted any lucky charms, make sure to keep them out for a few more days. Let’s get to the links!
Orlando City Wins U.S. Open Cup Match
It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but Orlando City went on the road and beat FC Naples 1-0 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to advance to the round of 16. The Lions opted for a fairly young roster to start and managed to take the lead in the first half. The defense started to fall apart as the match wore on, but it managed to hold on by a matter of inches against the USL League One side for its first clean sheet of the year. Orlando is the last Floridian team standing in the tournament and its next match will be on the road against the New England Revolution on either April 28 or 29.
MLS Mostly Avoids Cupsets in Round of 32
There weren’t too many shocking results in the round of 32 of this year’s U.S. Open Cup, with the MLS clubs taking care of business for the most part. Charlotte FC crushed the Charlotte Independence 6-0, the Columbus Crew shut out the Richmond Kickers in a 3-0 win, and the New York Red Bulls beat the Pittsburgh Riverhounds 3-1. St. Louis City and the Houston Dynamo also cruised to comfortable wins. D.C. United was defeated though, losing the penalty shootout to One Knoxville SC after a thrilling game. Last year’s tournament didn’t include any teams from outside MLS in the quarterfinals. The Colorado Springs Switchbacks and Louisville City also managed to take down their MLS opponents earlier this week, so we’ll see if they can keep making noise later this month.
Takeaways From USWNT Loss to Japan
The United States Women’s National Team lost 1-0 to Japan in the second of three friendlies between the two this month, snapping its 10-game win streak. Head Coach Emma Hayes went with a young roster, with 20-year-old midfielder Claire Hutton becoming the team’s youngest captain since 2001. The team’s inexperience showed at times, particularly when it came to struggling to produce chances despite plenty of possession, but these were valuable minutes against one of the top teams in the world. We’ll see how the team responds on Friday when the two play again in Denver.
UEFA Champions League Semifinals Set
Only four teams remain in the UEFA Champions League after an exciting series of quarterfinals. Bayern Munich advanced after beating Real Madrid 4-3 in a rollercoaster of a match that included five goals in the first half. Arda Guler had a brace within the first 30 minutes, but Bayern kept things close and then scored two late goals after Eduardo Camavinga was shown a red card in the 86th minute. The match between Arsenal and Sporting was a quieter affair, with Arsenal advancing on aggregate after a scoreless draw.
The semifinals don’t feature any teams from the same country and should be a fun round of matches. Atletico Madrid will square off against Arsenal, while Bayern will play against Paris Saint-Germain.

- LAFC midfielder Jude Terry won MLS Goal of the Matchday for his curled shot from outside of the box against the Portland Timbers. It was the 17-year-old’s first goal in MLS and a pretty impressive way for him to open his account.
- In case you missed it, LAFC drew 1-1 against Cruz Azul to reach the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals. Nashville SC also advanced, beating Club America 1-0 at the Azteca in a huge win.
- You’ll need to get past the paywall for the full details, but the NWSL is reportedly working on a league-wide exposure agreement policy that would force players to cover up logos of non-sponsored brands.
- New Zealand qualified for the 2027 Women’s World Cup after winning 1-0 against Papua New Guinea.
- French forward Hugo Ekitike will miss the World Cup due to a leg injury sustained during Liverpool’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain.
That’s all I have for you this time around. I hope you all have a wonderful Thursday and rest of your week!

Orlando City visits FC Naples, Champions League results, World Cup news, and more.
Welcome to Wednesday, Mane Landers. It’s our first tax day with out Kyle “The Tax Man” Smith, but hopefully we’ll still get everything filed on time. What wasn’t in time to be included today was the USWNT friendly against Japan last night since it kicked off at 10 p.m. We will have more on that match tomorrow. Most importantly, it’s match day for Orlando City, so let’s get to the links.
Orlando City’s Open Cup Begins
Orlando City is in Naples for the club’s opening match of the 2026 U.S. Open Cup. The Lions are facing USL League One side FC Naples tonight. FC Naples is a good team that currently sits first in USL League One. We can expect a few veterans to make an appearance, but we will likely see younger players like Zakaria Taifi. The team is expecting a sold-out crowd for the home team. Taifi shared his thoughts with the media ahead of the match.
Crocker to Saudi Arabia
Matt Crocker is no longer the sporting director of the U.S. Soccer Federation after taking a similar position with the Saudi Arabia soccer federation. Crocker is the person responsible for bringing in Emma Hayes and Mauricio Pochettino. The main part of his job was implementing a top-to-bottom alignment of the “U.S. Way” across all levels in the U. S. Soccer system. Saudi Arabia reportedly presented an offer that Crocker could not refuse. The timing is interesting given the World Cup is only about two months away.
Champions League Results
It was an eventful day in the UEFA Champions League. Soon-to-be Orlando City attacker Antoine Greizmann’s Atletico Madrid got past Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate to advance to the semifinals. The USMNT’s Johnny Cardoso made a late appearance to help defend the result. Much to my chagrin, PSG ousted Liverpool 2-0 (4-0 on aggregate). The other two matches are later today with Bayern Munich taking on Real Madrid and Arsenal facing Sporting CP.
World Cup News
Do you remember the feeling you had when it was announced that the World Cup would once again be played in the United States? I remember thinking how cool it was going to be to go to a match even if it meant driving hours to do so. How naive I was. A lot of the news is more like this story about the NJ Transit raising the cost of train tickets seven fold.
Several venues are also not allowing tailgating at the games, including matches at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. We also now know the full list of referees from all six soccer confederations.

- Javier Mascherano is out at Inter Miami. I really hope this sends Inter Miami into a tailspin for the rest of the season, though I doubt it will.
- Oscar Pareja and Mascherano aren’t the only coaches let go so far this season, but is parting ways with a coach early in a season a good idea? (Paywalled link).
- Ally Financial has reached its proposed 50/50 media goal of equal advertising spending on men’s and women’s sports media earlier than expected. I’m always suspicious of big companies, but this is still a good thing.
- The U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team defeated Brazil 2-0 in the first of two matches between the two.
- Lionel Messi has been sued for not showing up for Inter Miami friendlies. Hahahahahahaha…deep breath…hahahahahahahaha.
That will do it for today. Check back tonight for our coverage of Orlando City’s U.S. Open Cup match. Vamos Orlando!
