Orlando City
2023 Orlando City Season in Review: Felipe
The veteran central midfielder added some grit and guile to Orlando City’s lineup in 2023.
Orlando City signed Felipe Martins, known primarily in the soccer world as just Felipe, to a one-year contract with an option year for 2024. Felipe spent the previous season at Austin FC, but his option was declined. Prior to that, he played with CF Montreal, the New York Red Bulls, the Vancouver Whitecaps, and D.C. United. The defensive midfielder is a well-known practitioner of the dark arts of soccer and brought that joyfully malicious attitude to Orlando City. It turns out that’s a lot more fun when he’s on your team than when he’s one of the opponents.
Let’s take a look at the veteran’s first season with Orlando City.
Statistical Breakdown
Felipe appeared in 16 regular-season matches, starting six, and playing a total of 560 minutes. He scored no goals on nine shots with three on target. Felipe did provide an assist, one successful cross, and three key passes. He completed 305 of his 355 total passes (85.9%), and was accurate on 15 long balls. Defensively, he made eight interceptions, won 48.2% of his duels, logged six tackles, and won 21.4% of his headed duels. Felipe also committed six fouls, suffered 11 fouls, and earned three yellow cards.
The 33-year-old made one appearance in the MLS playoffs as a substitute and only logged two minutes. Felipe did not score a goal, take a shot, or provide an assist He only attempted one pass which was not successful. Defensively, he won 100% of his duels, committed no fouls, suffered no fouls, and was not booked.
Felipe made one appearance in Leagues Cup play in the 3-1 loss to Inter Miami. He did not start and came on for 10 minutes. He passed at a 93.8% rate, lost one duel, and suffered one foul. Felipe did not make an appearance in the U.S. Open Cup.
However, the Brazilian did make one appearance off the bench in the Concacaf Champions League, playing six minutes in Orlando City’s 0-0 draw at Tigres. He completed 100% of his passes, recorded one tackle, drew two fouls, and won three duels.
Felipe made one appearance for Orlando City B in MLS NEXT Pro. He played all 90 minutes in the 5-4 loss to New England Revolution II. In that match, he did not score a goal but had one shot that was on target, and provided one assist. He passed at an 86.4% rate with eight (!) key passes. Defensively, he made one tackle, won three of four duels (75%), committed one foul, suffered one foul, and was not booked.
Best Game
Felipe’s best match was the 3-1 loss to the New England Revolution on June 17. It was his most active match, as the defensive midfielder played 89 minutes — the most minutes of any of his MLS regular-season appearances — and got into the attacking end. Felipe took four shots, putting two on target, though he did not score a goal or provide an assist. He passed at a 76.9% rate and suffered three fouls in the match without committing any himself. He also was not booked.
2023 Final Grade
The Mane Land staff gave Felipe a composite rating of 5 out of 10 for the 2023 season. He was brought in as a backup for Cesar Araujo and Wilder Cartagena, but once Junior Urso returned, he saw his opportunities for minutes drop off. Felipe is getting older, but he knows the game and can cause havoc in the midfield, and it’s good to have a veteran player on the squad who can slow the game down and break the other team’s rhythm and momentum.
2024 Outlook
Orlando City exercised the option on Felipe for the 2024 season. The biggest reason is that his salary was significantly less than Urso’s, whom the club did not retain. Felipe will continue in the same role for the Lions next season — a late-match substitute that can provide spot starts, eat up minutes when one of the starters is on a yellow card, and get in the heads of the opposition as the Lions look to close out matches.

Justin Ellis honored, Antoine Griezmann earns praise, Ally Lemos chosen for Skills Challenge, and more.
Happy Friday, Mane Landers! Today is the 12-year anniversary of the groundbreaking at Orlando City SC’s soccer-specific stadium that took place in 2014. I was last at the stadium in September to see the Orlando Pride play and am still blown away about just how pretty the purple seats look on a sunny day. Let’s jump right into today’s links!
Justin Ellis Named MLS NEXT Pro Pathway Player of the Year
Orlando City forward Justin Ellis was selected as the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro Pathway Player of the Year, an award that honors players who have excelled at multiple levels of the league’s development pathway. While part of Orlando City’s academy, Ellis was named 2025 U-19 MLS NEXT MVP after claiming the Golden Boot with 18 goals and was also the top scorer at the 2025 Generation Adidas Cup to help Orlando win the title. He recorded 12 goals and eight assists in 44 appearances with Orlando City B and made his MLS debut on May 14, 2025. As a Homegrown Player for the senior team this season, he’s racked up 10 assists so far and is one of the league’s top young players.
Antoine Griezmann Makes MLS Team of the Matchday Bench
Orlando City star Antoine Griezmann landed on the MLS Team of the Matchday bench after recording a goal and an assist in the team’s 3-3 draw on the road against Toronto FC. That’s back-to-back inclusions on the Team of the Matchday bench for Griezmann, who also had a goal and an assist in the 3-2 win over the Columbus Crew on Saturday. The Frenchman is the first MLS player to record a goal or an assist in 11 of his first 13 games. While a weirdly specific record to break, it’s impressive nonetheless as he builds a case for MLS Newcomer of the Year.
Ally Lemos Selected for NWSL Skills Challenge
Orlando Pride midfielder Ally Lemos was chosen to participate in this year’s NWSL Skills Challenge on Nov. 20 during the league’s NWSL Championship Week next month. There’s a $35,000 prize pool at stake for the players taking part in the event, which will take place at a high school in Virginia at 5:30 p.m. but won’t air on CBS and Paramount+ until 2 p.m. on Nov. 28. Lemos has played in all 27 of the Pride’s games this year, recording three assists and a goal along the way. Hopefully she has a strong showing at the event to give Pride fans something to cheer about after a rough year for the club.
Orlando Submits Bid to Host Women’s World Cup
The Greater Orlando Sports Commission has submitted a bid to host games for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The proposal includes both Inter.co Stadium and Camping World Stadium. A joint bid led by the U.S. that also includes Mexico, Jamaica, and Costa Rica is uncontested to host the tournament and is expected to be voted on next month. Orlando hosted six FIFA Club World Cup games in 2025 and a bid was also submitted last month for the two aforementioned stadiums to host the 2031 Men’s Rugby World Cup as well. If all goes to plan, that summer could end up being an exciting time for sports fans in the City Beautiful.

- The Pride are all but mathematically eliminated from playoff contention and it could become official on Saturday if the Denver Summit win against Angel City FC or if the North Carolina Courage win or draw against the San Diego Wave. Of course, the Pride failing to win against the Houston Dash on Sunday will officially end things as well.
- Speaking of the Wave, they signed midfielder Lia Godfrey to a three-year contract extension through 2029. She’s scored six goals and added five assists in 27 appearances for the Wave so far in her rookie season.

Orlando City vs. Toronto FC: Five Takeaways
Here’s what we learned from Orlando City’s 3-3 draw with Toronto FC.
Orlando City traveled to Canada for an important Eastern Conference match against Toronto FC. The Lions kept the offensive production from last match going but were also their typical porous selves on defense, drawing 3-3 with Toronto. It was another wild back-and-forth match for the Lions. Here are my five takeaways from the match.
Soccer Pitch or Hockey Rink?
I lost count of how many times players slipped on the pitch Wednesday night. There were definitely more Orlando City players sliding around than Toronto players. If Harvey Sarajian had not slipped in the box, he may have been able to beat the keeper to the ball and put a shot on goal. Martin Ojeda fell when he slowed down to receive a pass on a counterattack, giving the ball back to Toronto. There were a dozen more in just the first 20 minutes of the match. It wasn’t just in the offensive half either. Defenders were unintentionally going to ground as well.
What’s a Right Back?
Theoretically, Ivan Angulo started at right back. Of course, he ranged up and down the pitch working into the attack. If Toronto countered, it was Eduard Atuesta that covered the position. Atuesta has difficulty on defense in the midfield on occasion, and is most definitely not a fullback. It was Atuesta that had to defend Lewis Morgan when he came into the box on an early cross by Toronto. I’m certain you can guess how effective he was, given Morgan easily headed the ball into the right side of the goal to give Toronto the first-half lead. Angulo also contributed a boneheaded play that gave Toronto its second goal. He tried a back pass that Niklas Dorsch pounced on. Theo Corbeanu eventually scored to give the Reds their second lead of the match. Finally, Angulo was too passive in the 90th minute at the back post, so when a rebound from Djordje Mihailovic’s shot deflected that way, Matheus Pereira stepped past Angulo and tied the game late.
A Hand(ball) Up, A Record Broken
I assume that Toronto felt bad for Orlando City in the first half. The Lions held a massive advantage in possession but had barely sniffed a shot on goal. In the 45th minute, Pereira stuck his arm out on a bouncing cross and the ball hit it, giving Orlando City a penalty. Ojeda stepped up, hesitated, and then buried the ball in the bottom left corner past Luka Gavran. The goal was Ojeda’s 48th for Orlando City making him the club’s all-time leading scorer across all competitions, surpassing the previous mark of 47 goals that had been held by Facundo Torres.
Griezmann Pounces
Antoine Griezmann is a very smart soccer player. As such, he conserves his energy and puts himself in good positions to make impactful plays. He did so again when Orlando City needed it the most. Ojeda put a free kick into the box in the second half that the defense deflected to Orlando’s attacking right, where it eventually ended up where Iago could head it over to a wide-open and onside Griezmann, who calmly equalized for Orlando City. Griezmann now has goal contributions in nine consecutive MLS matches.
Cardiac Cats Giveth and Taketh
Following Griezmann’s goal, the Cardiac Cats showed up, scoring a third goal to give the Orlando City the lead for the first time in the match. Angulo took a pass from Griezmann and then sent it back toward the Frenchman in the box, Griezmann dummied the ball, which ended up with Daryl Dike, who finally got another goal for Orlando City. It’s been a while coming for the big man, and the timing was perfect. Unfortunately, the Cardiac Cats stayed on the field and gave up the equalizer in the 89th minute. Some draws feel good, but this one feels like a lost opportunity on the road.
Those are my takeaways from Orlando City’s draw with Toronto FC. The Lions play again Saturday at home against D.C. United in the third of three matches in an eight-day span. Let us know your thoughts about the Toronto match in the comments below. Vamos Orlando!

Orlando City concedes late in draw with Toronto FC, Justin Ellis earns praise, U.S. Soccer announces Crest Cup for women’s soccer, and more.
How are you feeling after last night’s Orlando City game? I don’t think my thoughts have ever been as mixed, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles at times when supporting the Cardiac Cats. It could’ve gone worse though, and being able to watch Antoine Griezmann work his magic is always a treat. Today marks nine years since Kaká’s final game with Orlando City, and I’ve loved being able to see world class players like him, Griezmann, Nani, and more over the years in Orlando. Let’s get to the links.
Lions Blow Lead Late in Dramatic Draw
Orlando City went on the road to Canada and played to a 3-3 draw against Toronto FC in a rollercoaster of a match. The Lions clawed their way back to equalize twice and managed to take the lead late in the match, but couldn’t close things out despite another solid performance by goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau behind a leaky defense. Make sure to check out our match recap of what was an exciting, yet frustrating, match that at least featured a couple of great Orlando goals.
Justin Ellis Earns Praise During Breakout Season
The Athletic‘s Tom Bogert ranked his top 22 MLS players under the age of 22 and Orlando City forward Justin Ellis ranked eighth on his list. The 19-year-old has 10 assists and a goal to his name this season, thriving in the attack with an intriguing combination of creativity, strength, and positioning. He’s also already scored for the United States Men’s National Team, doing so in Orlando last month against Peru. Bogert predictably has Philadelphia Union phenom Cavan Sullivan at the top of his list and Julian Hall in second. We’ll see if Ellis lands a bit higher than eighth when the annual MLS 22 Under 22 list is unveiled later this year.
U.S. Soccer Announces Crest Cup
A new club tournament is coming to women’s soccer. U.S. Soccer announced the Arthur M. Blank Crest Cup for women’s soccer teams across the country to compete against each other in a single-elimination format. Official details such as when this will take place and which teams will be allowed to participate haven’t been unveiled at this point, but it does seem like it will at least include teams from both the NWSL and USL Super League. The winner of the Crest Cup will receive $1.1 million and qualify for the Concacaf W Champions Cup. Toothpaste jokes aside regarding the name, I’m excited for a tournament that puts a spotlight on more women’s soccer teams.
Takeaways From USWNT Friendlies
The United States Women’s National Team may not have beaten Spain in either of its two friendlies against the European powerhouse, but it at least finished strong by rallying to a 2-2 draw in the second meeting. Not many of the problems the USWNT faced were unexpected either. Naomi Girma’s absence was felt on defense, neither Claudia Dickey nor Phallon Tullis-Joyce emerged as the clear starter in goal, and the midfield looked suboptimal against the best team in the world. Head Coach Emma Hayes has multiple decisions to make before the Women’s World Cup next summer, with the USWNT’s next match coming on Nov. 27 against El Salvador in the Concacaf W Championship quarterfinals.
UEFA Champions League Roundup
The UEFA Champions League returned this week and there were plenty of good games across Europe. In one of the bigger matchups of this round, Paris Saint-Germain went to England and beat Manchester City 4-2 to move to the top of the table. Elsewhere, Real Madrid mounted a late comeback to beat AS Roma 4-3 in Italy, Bradley Barcola scored a hat trick in Liverpool’s 6-3 win over LAK Linz, and Bodo/Glimt won 1-0 in Norway against Borussia Dortmund. The teams will play again on Tuesday and Wednesday, with PSG going up against Barcelona and Bayern Munich hosting Arsenal as two of the heavyweight showdowns.
